I was an expat in Brunei for 10 years. You mentioned that "many of the signs are printed in Malay and Arabic", well, technically that's not Arabic *language*, but it is also Malay, just written in Arabic script, which is called "Jawi", (although they often refer to any Arabic-script language, even Farsi). It was once used throughout Malaysia, but now is only officially used in Brunei. People who speak Arabic find Malay Jawi unintelligible.

I was born there and lived in Brunei for 17 years before furthering my studies in Singapore. If you're confused about the agriculture part it's because the soil is way too clayey for it to be feasible. And about the Sharia Law, a lot of my friends say it's not as serious as the media makes it to be. Just as long as you dress conservatively, everything's pretty much the same. As far as I know, no one's been punished by amputation or death so all's still well.

@@masteroogway6339 Ahh no. As a UBD history student I can assure you that th Baru-Nah is actually a myth. There are a lot of theories on how Brunei got its name. The island itself is actually Kalimantan but when the Europeans came especially the Spanish, they called Brunei as "Borney" in the Boxer Codex and several other letters from Dr. Franciso De Sande and Kapitan Esteban Rodriguez. Since Brunei is still one of the biggest kingdoms in the 15th to 16th century in the island, comprising of parts in Sarawak, Sabah and certain coastal areas in west and east Kalimantan, the name Borney got stuck to several European travellers and they started to refer the whole island as that name. The Baru-Nah is a constructed mythical story that probably emerged centuries after the kingdom of Brunei was established.

As a Bruneian I will disclose some information: - Brunei has built the 'Sultan haji Omar Ali Saifuddien bridge' which spans from mainland Brunei to the Temburong district so locals can drive without crossing the Malaysian border. - It is the longest bridge in South East Asia. - The Nation provides free healthcare and free education to Bruneian citizens. - There is no tax. - Gas prices are very low - Brunei used to be much bigger where the Malaysian parts of Sabah and Sarawak (with other phillipine islands) used to be part of the country.

Facts about Brunei (the country that I currently live in): From the map, we realise that the Philippines is very near to the Brunei Kingdom. Thus, it was not a surprise that in 1578, Spain decided to attack and invade the Brunei Kingdom. This Battle was known as the Castille War. However, the Spanish were only able to occupy Brunei for 72 days. They were driven out by Brunei warriors led by Pengiran Bendahara Sakam. After the Castille War, there were many internal quarrels in Brunei. There was a quarrel for more than 30 years over who the next Sultan should be. They even fought against one another (the Bruneians) (PS. I didn't copy this from a webpage instead I copied it from my Social Studies textbook and yes, I am studying in Brunei!!😊)

I'm a Bruneian. It's true that we have to import most of our food. But there has been an approach from the government towards agriculture for the past couple of decades. We just need the youth to take part and be interested into the farming industry. The support is there, the resources are available widely, but we're lacking of the interest from the population.Based on the fact that oil and gas are non-renewable natural resources, the country and its population need to think another way to increase their national revenue. Though at current rate, Brunei is still able to maintain its US$50,000 per capita annual GDP, but with the current fluctuation in global oil's prices, along with the increase of population every year, it's hard to deny that the country will face some difficulties in the next decade, or even in few years time. The bubble has started to grow with the increase in number of unemployment.I don't have the real number here but my best guess would be, 5-10% of the population aged between 18-60 are unemployed. That is absurd giving the fact that there are still many unexplored areas that have the potential to grow. Namely fishing, farming, raw food production, basically the whole agricultural sector or the primary sector. I don't even want to touch secondary sector/production because that is a whole another chapter. 60-70% of the working population belongs to the tertiary sector, and we know that number isn't good for any country. So that is my 2 cents on my country's economical review. Thanks for reading, and have a good day.

Here are some interesting things to know about our sultan: He provides free healthcare and only charge a fee of 1 BND for medicine... no matter what the cost. He provides monthly budgets to the officers that run the country under him to make any improvements rather it be it healthcare, infrastructure and so on He created a program that allowed any brunei citizen with a job to apply for a house that they provided, a lot of houses were built for this program and so far.. thousands of people arrived to a new home Every year he opens his palace for citizens to visit him and the family for Hari Raya aidilfitri and held prayers for citizens during the holy month of ramadhan, and also created a program for the orphans and single mothers and also selected senior citizens and then they were given a huge sum of money as a gift. Orphans and single mothers were also given sums of money every month to support them And so on...

Loved this video! I live in Brunei, and the reason why Brunei's agricultural output is actually so low is on one hand down to its sub par importance in contrast with oil - economically speaking but soil in Brunei is actually quite acidic making it hard to grow many different plants, especially the vegetables often sold in super markets. Brunei however does grow Padi, in certain areas. Again, Brunei does have potential to expand its agricultural sector but often the importance is lost when the need to develop infrastructure in that particular area is brought up. I really like this channel! You've earned yourself another subscriber!

Hey Paul (Barby), I've been a big fan of your work and as a Malay Malaysian, it's quite exciting to watch a video on Brunei and see you pronouncing Malay words, haha. But there's a slight mistake that you made, that is the 'Arabic' that you see on signs etc in Brunei is actually the 'Jawi' script, which was the main and dominant script used to write the Malay language in pre- and early- colonial eras in the Muslim areas of the Malay archipelago. And recent articles that I have read says that most Muslim Bruneians are happy to adopt the Sharia law as their national law and the sharia law isn't actually imposed on non-Muslims. Fun fact: the word 'Borneo' is a 16th century Italian explorer's adaptation of the name for most powerful kingdom on the Island, that is Brunei. Later, the British decided to use that term for the whole island.

Hey, just commented to say thanks for making a very accurate review/overview of Brunei. I'm Bruneian-Chinese and I can say that it's actually a very nice place to live in. Not sure what to make of the Syariah Law since its introduction, absolutely nothing has changed. (Besides the caning part when you're taken into custody). Oh and between, it's Seria not Sereia. Cheers mate~

@Merlin I wish he'd also help the youth in making money. I looked up how to make money as a teen, and soo much of them are soo efficient. Too bad we don't have the same level of efficiency tho. Seriously they're so easy to do, so if you're studying, you can make a little side money easily. The sultan is so damn rich yet they cant fund the government to improve brunei at all. Oh right, its the car collection.

I like these brief nation videos at the beginning of the alphabet. But, as time goes on and Barby gets closer toward the end of the alphabet, GN episodes get longer and longer. A good supplement to these, however, is Mr. History's channel who keeps it brief and only focuses on history. For a little more on Brunei's history, try there, too.

"even though they have fertile soil" Maybe we do. But Brunei is still a developing country, so knowledge and workforce was still a bit of a problem. We are still developing. Some citizens just raise their own fruits and vegetables for themselves but sometimes they sell it as well. But not many as buying a land for farm would cost fortune. Not everybody has the money to purchase it. However, having said that, we have started on planting "padi" already as His Majesty encouraged us to lessen the imports of rice from Thailand. 😁

@Arab league of course anyone are welcomed to visit... But due to covid19, there are travel restrictions now though. I think u have to take covid19 swab before u leave ur country or otherwise you'll be charged to take a swab in brunei. There'll be a 14 days isolation after arrival as well. So it might cost you more $$ for hotels n stuff. So yeah... 😁
