@@user-bz1od4yc5r Sorry but you are misinformed. We have mostly Slavic and Hungarian origins (in the East where 70% of Austrians live) due to 400 years of common history under the Habsburgs . Besides culturally they are on two ends of the spectrum: low context ("say what I mean" guess who:-) and high context (just hint the main message and leave room for interpretations) within Europe. Jut ask Germans who lived in Austria for a long time and most oft them will tell you that they due to lack of knowledge believed your statement in the first year or so and now being wiser regret having moved there in the first place:-)

Lo .Sconosciuto but Rus' isn't Russia, just because the fact that Rus' existed in IX-XIII centuries (and in XI-XIII centuries there were a lot of separated duchies instead of united country). The history of Russia, as a state, begins in the XIV-XV centuries, when the Duchy of Moscow became the most powerful among the other duchies. What depends to our "confederation" with Russia, yes, we have some agreements like The Union state of Russia and Belarus, but the word "confederation" is too big for that. Look at Switzerland - this country is a confederation.

I am Belarusian and this video is good, but not perfect. At first, if I speak Belarusian with people from Russia, they almost can't understand me, so it's better to speak Russian with Russian people (I am a native Belarusian speaker). Also it's kinda weird to call our language "a mixture between Polish and Russian". Then, after Crimea was taken to Russia, Belarus became really neutral (it lead to even more close friendship with Ukraine). And, if to be exact, it's correct to pronounce not "Belarušian", but "Belarusan". Howewer, you may write "Belarusian" and it would be correct. I will write something about the history of the region and Belarus from Grand Dutchy to USSR. During Grutchy of Lithuania Belarus developed its culture and force. Dutches were Belarusian and govermental documents were also made in Ruthenian (Old Belarusian) language, but that Dutchy was really tolerant. All nations (from Tatars to Polish) and all religions (from Heathenism to Islam) in Dutchy were treated the same almost all time before Commonwealth was formed. In the times of Alhierd and Vitaut the Great our Dutchy was a country from the sea to the sea (covering everything between Baltic and Black sea). During the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Belarusians were somehow pressed by Polish. Their influence became really great after 1650s. But Dutchy was still independant in that Commonwealth. Belarusians, Lithuanians etc. were still able to develop their culture freely. After 1790s almost all Dutchy was covered by Russia. Howewer, national cultures of nations from Dutchy were still developing. That time brought Belarusians and Ukrainians (and, of course, Russians) their best poets and authors. In Belarus -- Bahuševič, Kolas, Kupala etc. In Ukraine -- Taras Shevchenko, in Russia -- Pushkin and Lermontov. When Empire fell, national republics started to form (Belarusian People's Republic, Ukrainian People's Republic). But it didn't take long to them to be covered by Soviet Russia (formed is 1917), later USSR (from 1922). I guess later history of the region is well known. Thanks for a great video!

Late comment/addition, but I was under the impression that Belarus before 1900s was the "actual" Lithuania, while the current Lithuania was created by "neo-Lithuanians", a subculture made by Russia to split them away from Poland.

+Yagi Well, current Lithuanians are in fact descendants of the "original Lithuanians" who also inhabited parts of Belarus back in the day, hovewer for most of the history of the Commonwealth they were mainly rural population. Belarus and Lithuania were commonly seen as in fact parts of Poland, "Lithuanians" and "Belarusians" often meant "Polish people form Lithuania/Belarus region" as all the noble families and most cities' and towns' inhabitants were either Poles or native population polonised for centuries.

I see alternative historians here. Modern day Lithuanians always were Lithuanians - a Baltic people who split from Slavs centuries before Slavs even divided to Eastern, Western and Southern and scattered all over East European Plane. Belarusians are the Slavs originated from the Eastern Slavic tribes of Dregovichi and Radimichi (both split with Ukraine), and Krivichi (split with Russia). Only when Kievan Rus, the confederation of Eastern Slavic tribes, was desintegrated, a splinter known as Principality of Polotsk which constituted 2/3 of modern Belarus was conqured by Lithuania before Mongols even came and this is where Belarusians started to divergent from Russians and Ukrainians. Latter on Lithuania expanded even more by conquering Kiev from Mongols, ended bloodline of Rus dukes here and Proclaimed itself Grand Duchy, which made the split between Russians and Ukrainians. This way Lithuania ended up with little empire where majority of the population were Slavs but imperial core was Baltic, Lithuanian, so they were forced to conduct a slightly more Slavic friendly policy yet they still were doing usual imperial stuff like forcefull conversion from Eastern Orthodox faith to Roman Catholic, romanization of language an so on. There is still confusion Lithuanians and Belarusians somehow related whereas theyr relationships are similar to Austrians and Hungarians except even the faith and writing system was different and the Slavs were "second class" to Lithuanians. Lithuania did not been part of Poland originally and definitely not the "rural Poles". In fact they and Novgorod were competing for dominance and Rus leftovers in post Mongols Eastern Europe and only rapid rise of Moscow that obsorbed Novgorod forced Lithuania to join unjust Commonwealth dominated by Poland with Poles looking down on this "Eastern peasant" those further downgrading Belarusians to "third class" and eventually handing them to Russians.

Gor Mor balts did not split from slavs. Balts came to europe 3500 B.C and originated directly from proto indo europeans. Slavs originated from sarmatians/schytians 400 AD after huns destroyed rome. Thats why lithuanian language is older then latin, heleonic and probably is older then sansckrit , becouse balts gave birth to "vedas" who came from north to india and gave birth to indian culture

Belarusian is not derived from Russian, those languages are closely related, with common roots. If Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are sisters like you said, then it's a sister-language to Russian :) In fact the form of "Ruthenian" which become modern Belarusian was a dominant (and for long time official) language of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There where books printed in this language since early XVI century (like Skaryna's Bible), before first books printed in Russian.

Dear +Geography Now. Thank you for an overall pretty comprehensive video. I wanted to provide some feedback if you are open to it. Belarus does not mean White Russia, sorry to disappoint the pro-Russian rhetoric. It is derived from the terms Belaja - White , Rus - Ruthenia. Russia likes to claim the name, however, Ruthenia was a different historical multi-ethnic state and does not correspond to the current day Russia - Rossia. The name of the mixed language is Trasianka not Transianka, which is also easier to pronounce. Russians do not understand Belarusan/Belarusian when it's spoken. The only Russians that understand Belarusan language are the ones that studies or have been exposed to if for an extended period of time. I tested this many times, but people just blink, stare and on rare occasion smile. The language was NOT derived from the Russian language but. It was Russified by Russian starting in 1800s as part of the colonization rhetoric. There are a number of features that Belarusan has, which neither Russian nor Polish languages exhibit. So to claim that it's a mix or a dialect is incorrect. There are two different set of grammar and spelling rules for Belarusan language, one predates Russian influence and another one after it. They are called Taraškievica and Narkamaŭka. Taraškievica includes more native words and phonetic spelling. While Narkamaŭka is the result of Russification of the langauge. While the pronunciation is of Belarusian is close enough, it is not technically correct. More exact pronunciation is Beh-lah-roo-see-an and alternative spelling Belarusan - Beh-lah-roo-san. In some shots I also saw the misspelling with 2 s. It's always 1 s as there is only 1 s in the world Belarus. Thanks for your time.

Belarusian is not a mixture of Polish and Russian, nor is it "derived" from Russian as you've stated. It is a language in its very own right, belonging to the East Slavic family-- to which Russian and Ukrainian both also belong. Modern Belarusian developed organically from the same Old East Slavic mother tongue alongside Ukrainian and Russian, while featuring a greater degree of lexical and phonological influence from Polish by virtue of geographical proximity. You wouldn't say that a sister is "derived" from her brother, so saying that the Belarusian language derives from the Russian one is fallacious. Trasyanka is another matter entirely, and is a relaxed, informal dialect which mixes linguistic elements of Belarusian and Russian. It is generally spoken in more comfortable, everyday settings. Very sadly, the pure language is languishing and is increasingly neglected, as it is often associated with rural or less educated people (this is in no small part due to Lukashenko's very pro Russian political stance).
