So much to talk about, as always with Geoff!! The resolved cadence I briefly mentioned was the entering into a major key for a split second, resolving in a major rather than sticking to the minor that we were in. So the flattening of a note that we didn't hear was actually the third note rising a semitone, making it a major chord rather than a minor! Hope that makes sense. What a fantastic rendition of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

    I find it absolutely hilarious yet relatable that you kept forgetting that it was all Geoff, and then immediately remembering that it _is_ just Geoff. The dude just makes you forget that he's the only one singing.

    We might be very familiar with a piece of music, but when Geoff interprets it ... he takes it to a totally new level! His arrangements and voice are spectacular! 🔥🤯💖💯 He thrives on challenges, and I have a feeling we're going to hear him doing more and more runs. A while ago, when VoicePlay did Tennessee Whiskey, he said he couldn't do runs like Eli and J None, but he did it anyway, and it's only gotten better since then. Geoff constantly works on his voice, and never stops amazing me! 🤯👍🎶

    As an English and etymology nerd, the fact that he rhymed "mind" and "wind" in the original Middle English pronunciation just warms my heart. I found you recently (hello) and I love your insight. I watch reaction videos to learn more about a song I already love. Why would anyone NOT want you to pause and point out a musician's brilliant hidden details? What ignorance! Please feel free to pause the video as often as needed and delve into things. We already know the song, we want the ANALYSIS.... and shocked looks when Geoff hits those notes, of course! Anyone who doesn't want knowledge should go watch one of those non-musician reactors. You, Peter, Mortius... I love the knowledge you all bestow and your sense of humor. Much love from Oregon!

    The lyrics’ natural cadence is iambic pentameter. I like the way he added a musical rhythm that emphasizes that. Also, right about 10:20 (this video), there’s also this light, high descending sound almost like strings being plucked or staccato keyboard. VERY nice. I hadn’t noticed that before. I like the way your explain the vocal technique and harmonies. Great reaction!

    I now think of him as Geoff and the Geofftones. It's a bit of a throwback to my young days when singers had names like that. :) Yes it's lovely how he moves from the minor to major to bring resolution. Lovely reacting. I don't mind pauses when people rewind a bit to keep things moving. And yes, this is a much more joyful arrangement.

    Your antics at the end made me smile ear to ear! Now my face hurts, thank you very much! All kidding aside, I want to be cerealous ( dang it youngun. now you have me making up words!) about your knowledge. You have knowledge! You guessed right away that it was Jeff who sang that note. You made me so proud of you! You didn't disappoint, you tried the low note again. If you ever hit one of Jeff's subharmonic notes I will emulate you and grab my head so it doesn't explode. It would be fun if you were to lip sync one of them and blow our minds! I too love the yogottago notes ( I learn so much from you!) because I gotta go after hearing him sing. Last comment; you still need to listen to Jeff's " The Headless Horseman" even if you don't react to it. I think you would love it! Have a beautiful day!

    I really enjoyed your analysis and always learn something new. Loved your rendition at the end :-) As a side note, your videos are always noted to be reaction videos with analysis so I expect to hear you talk through it. And if I am watching you do that it usually means I already watched the standalone version. I have watched some reaction videos where they hold all discussion until the end. That just causes me to skip to the end. Now I do understand that, every now and then, Voiceplay or Geoff will put out something that just kind of hits the mute button for surprised reactors, but that's fun too.

    I am, for one, always here to listen to your breakdowns and reactions....so yeah, if you don't want that...well, that's just silly cause you are so much fun to watch! I always enjoy finding reactors that enjoy the music and enjoy getting to 'nerd out' on the music/arrangement/video/lighting (whatever their speciality is). Not only do I get to learn new things but often I notice, or they notice and point out, something I never caught before. Geoff really did do a fantastic job with this arrangement (not that he doesn't pretty much always) and while I love his bass (like everyone else) I have to admit, my favorite parts of this version are when he's in the more baritone ranges. His voice is so lovely in that range to me. Great job as always!

    6:09 lowest note was doubled but least he has multple Geoff's with him and it actually makes sense. All of my favorite bass vocalists throw that effect on. It's one of a few effects like marinating in reverb female Sopranos swim in and i don't mind. In a music video anything goes. The line not to cross is lip-synching or using live autotune in venues that people payed for entry.

    Hi Jen! On Geoff's high parts here, the harmonies he's singing seem to be similar notes to other high harmonies he does on other songs (Sixteen Tons, Headless Horseman, Monster Mash, etc.). As if someone else singing the notes would be instantly recognizable as singing a 'Geoff harmony'. Is there a name for the combinations of notes that he's picking from the chords for his harmonies? It doesn't sound to my admittedly uneducated (in a musical theory sense) ear as if he's choosing standard tenor or alto notes there. Is it just my imagination, or does he show evidence of preferring certain 'harmonic progressions' (if that's a thing) and if so, is there a name for that? I've probably forgotten more about theory than I ever learned (back in the Early Cretaceous Period), but is this some form of "mode"?

  • @raeyth_

    @raeyth_

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Bill, this is a bit late, but here's my take on what's going on with the harmonies. Admittedly, I don't have the best ear for intensifying chords, so this may not be entirely accurate. His harmonies in his background vocals alternate between singing in unison and sing in chord extensions from the main melodic lines. Most of the chords are simple major or minor chords to follow the melody, but the more dissonant chords he uses are, as far as I can tell, primarily 7ths and 9ths. The 7th being directly below the root note and the 9th (or 2nd, just up an octave), sits right between the root and 3rd, which are the backbone of the chords. These two notes can create a strong sense of dissonance which is very satisfying when resolved. I've noticed he tends to use them a lot right before a low bass note or a vocal run. The dissonant tones really catch a listeners ear, keeping you more alert for what follows. I hope this answers at least some of your question. I never formally studied music theory, but that's the best I have.

  • @billparrish4385

    @billparrish4385

    @@raeyth_ Thanks for that! And you describe a lot of his choices there that I missed before. Your description of his use of the 7th and 9th, for example, almost sounds like you're starting to describe one of the 7 'modes' (phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, etc.), which may be the concept I'm reaching for. I was mainly curious if there's a name for the combination of choices he makes. It doesn't seem like 'standard' (whatever that is) high harmonies to me. Very much 'Geoff-ish', which is a good thing.
