Genomics in Medical Specialties - Clinical Genetics

The field of clinical genetics has grown and changed with the increasing availability of genomic testing.
In this video, professor Bill Newman, clinical geneticist and professor at the University of Manchester, considers some of the changes that have taken place in the profession and where geneticists find themselves today: at the helm of a revolution in the way in which we care for patients and families.
Professor Newman talks about the huge differences that newer genomic technologies have made, as well as some of the challenges the health services faces - including ensuring there are enough geneticts and genetic counsellors to bring the benefits to patients.
As experts in genomics, clinical geneticists have a hugely important role to play:
- they keep abreast of changes and developments, trying to incorporate findings from research into practice as quickly as possible for patients;
- they increasingly work closely with a growing number of other specialists to bring the benefits of genomics to patients across healthcare, not just in the genetics clinic; and
- they play a leading roll in research and the development of new drugs and treatments.
Professor Newman outlines some of the new and exciting therapies on offer to patients as a result of advances in genomics. He uses the example of a rapid genomics test that he and colleagues have developed that can determine whether or not a baby will develop hearing loss as a result of being given the antibiotic gentamicin. Clinical geneticists' involvement in work such as this is extremely valuable.
The range of and opportunities for treatment is going to change rapidly, and geneticists are really at the heart of this exciting transformation.
The Genomics in Medical Specialties series has been developed in collaboration with genomics champions across the health service, with the aim of supporting clinicians with the mainstreaming of genomic medicine.
Health Education England's Genomics Education Programme is developing a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice. This video is the one of the many educational resources from the programme.
