According to those who were there, Oskar Werner was a raging alcoholic who gave the COLUMBO production team more trouble than any other guest actor. He threatened to quit, didn't show up to the set at times, and also threatened to leave the country during filming. The fact that they got the show done at all was, apparently, a miracle. This according to anecdotes of those who were there.

If the noise came from outside why didn't the security guard hear and investigate it, not to mention her husband who was still in the house at the time? It would be an amazing coincidence if a noise came from outside her window loud enough enough to have opened her bedroom came around the same time her mother was shot. Detectives like Columbo are not to big on coincidences when it comes to murder.

The 4:3 aspect ratio of Peacock is incorrect. No bars should exist at the top and bottom, just the sides. To see how done correctly, view Columbo on Amazon Prime (however, Amazon Prime does not have latter episodes, and after the third season the episodes are not in HD).

I remember on regular TV broadcasts years ago there were slight bars on the top and the bottom of the picture as well as on the sides. The solution was to set the ratio setting on the television set to 14:9 aspect ratio to eliminate the top and bottom bars and reduce the side bars width by half. If there was heavy bars on the top and bottom of the screen as well as the sides, then I would select "cinema zoom" to eliminate them.

If the picture is not in proportion to begin with 14:9 aspect zoom won't bring it into proportion.

Why didn't this door open during the experiment? Colombo needed to clap his hands.

I don't understand this one. Why should a sound make a door open? Maybe a change in air pressure would if a door is not shut completely, but a sound? Also why should it open when Columbo claps his hands like he does from INSIDE the room?

I'm not sure that this is the right answer, but the wife is bound to the wheelchair, and the reason why the murderer spends so much money is to make her life as simple as possible. So, by making the door open to sound, it saves the complexity of the wife having to open the door when it is hard for her to do so. I hope this is the answer you were looking for.

Mr. Van Wyck was a gadget expert. The house was transformed this way because of his wife being in a wheelchair. All of the doors in the house opened by a clap of the hand.

sometimes on this site commentators express doubts about a prosecutor's ability to secure a conviction based on Columbo's discoveries. maybe someone ought to advocate instead that Werner run like heck out of of town!
