Bo wrote, filmed, directed, and edited the entire INSIDE special himself, in one room. during covid. Whole special is worth a watch.

I relate the character Bo is portraying in the song as a carnival barker, beckoning you to enter his hall of mirrors. By the end, he's cackling because he knows he's got you trapped and now you can never escape.

This dude is a master at anything he does. This clip comes from his fourth special (as in standup special, as his acts are a mix of standup/skits and an album of comedic songs). He started on early youtube, performed standup tours on stage for the first three specials from 2010-2016, then quit performing due to panic attacks and his mental health in general. So this was a big deal for fans when INSIDE dropped on Netflix in 2021 as he hadn't made any new specials since 2016 (probably because he was too busy WRITING and DIRECTING his first movie "Eighth Grade", which I've never seen but heard only good things about and has a 99% on rotten tomatoes). Unlike his previous sets this one was made and performed entirely by him in his apartment with no audience because of COVID. He writes and art directs everything on his tour but he has a team to help tape the specials, like camera people, editors, someone coordinating lights and audio changes etc, on this special he is totally alone, working within those limitations aka you can literally see him using the clicker to change the lights at various points during his song, or how he had to edit a 90 minute production himself). If he had credits roll at the end of this it would be all him.

if i remember correctly, he did this whole album while on covid lockdown. all the lights, sound effects, camera work was a one man job. which was great imo.

Chasing reactions to Inside after I re-watched it last March is what caused me to stumble across Ren, and I've now spent 14 months chasing reactions to Ren. Which strikes me in this moment as... mission accomplished, Mr Bo "Internet Circus Barker" Burnham...

Nice! Haven’t watched a reaction to this one in a while, now I gotta go back and rewatch INSIDE again lol. I think you did a solid job on your analysis! A lot of what you said rings true for me. One angle I would add to it just for funsies… I feel like the specific character Bo is portraying in this is one of the countless algorithms that that runs our feeds. FB, Instagram, YT, Google, take your pick. He’s the carnival barker beckoning you in. His job is to keep you engaged and consuming content. He doesn’t judge, he doesn’t shame, and he couldn’t care less about what you’re consuming. All he cares about is doing his job as effectively as possible. And he is EXTREMELY effective at his job. Awesome reaction! Liked and Subscribed. Cheers

He has given this a kind of carnival barker feel to it, the guy that yells for people to come over and check out some lame things like the world's biggest croc or the haunted foot stool of Abraham Lincoln's cousin. The beauty of this song is that this is the stereotypical villain explaining his evil plan scene but in this case the plan is already completed and he has no care about explaining it because he already won.

Bo is amazing. He is the youngest comedian to ever have a solo stand up special on comedy central (19). He preformed live until he was 25 in which he was have panic attacks and anxiety. "Kayne Rant" was his last song before he walked off stage and out of the spotlight for 5years. Until, he came out with "Welcome to the Internet", as well as a few others, and "Inside"(Netflix special) . "Art is Dead", "God's Perspective", "Repeat stuff", "Words Words Words" are all older and better in my opinion. You have a lot of videos you could make with Bo Burnham's work. I'm here for it. Bo's work will make you think and ponder about your life and the world around you.

As a 90s kid who was also very technical, I can confirm that you are absolutely correct. Let's just say, the internet was a horrible thing for me. It exposed me to the darkest, most evil recesses of humanity, before there were any controls in place. Now days, you have to go looking hard for that shit. Back then, it was right on the surface, yet no one realized just how dark it got.

While this is correct, I think he's more alluding to how most people engaged with the internet back then. Obviously the dark shit was out there, but as far as MOST people were concerned, the internet was just this little quirky thing that your friend wrote a blog on and you could get MapQuest directions on

Thank you so much for your reaction! I think you're a highly underrated reactor, because I've also watched your reaction to 'All Eyes On Me' and I felt you really delved deep into that as well. I really appreciated how you noticed not only how he's controlling all of this himself (via the remote). I'm sure the comments have made you aware, but Bo created, directed, and performed all of these pieces (from Inside, the special) in one room over the course of COVID. (He also only used one camera!) Inside is a reflection of not only how quarantine affected people struggling with mental illness, but how capitalism, the internet, and the concept of 'life as a performance' influenced him specifically. It was really powerful to a lot of people who were also struggling with those things. He managed to encapsulate the despair and dissociation that comes from living in the world we live in while everything's going to hell and there's nothing we can do. I also think it's important to know some of Bo's personal history. Again, I'm sure you know from the comments, but Bo rocketed to stardom when he was around 16 years old. He was, in all honesty, the first "viral" KZreadr: he made videos like 'My whole family...' and 'I'm Bo Yo!' from his childhood room, and suddenly the world knew who he was. He went on to pretty much immediately making stand up comedy, and he did that until 2015, 2016, when his mental health finally forced him to step away from the spotlight. He took five years off and got ready to return to stand up...and then COVID and quarantine happened. Overall, I think Inside is a fascinating commentary and reflection of what it meant to grow up with the internet developing and watching as things grew rapidly out of control. Bo specifically highlights how it feels for him to look back on how the internet made him into who he is today -- he talks about that in his other specials, about how he both appreciates it and hates it. He loves his audience and needs them, but he hates them and fears them at the same time. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a child internet star, honestly, but the constant surveillance from advertisers, the monetization of self...I can understand that. And so can so many of us who grew up being viewed as nothing more than numbers by big companies. Anyway, I would 100% suggest watching the entirety of Inside. It's an experience like none other. It's a 'comedy show' like none other. Even if you don't react to the whole thing (understandable with how KZread is) I would recommend it just because it's truly a powerful experience. I wish you luck on your Bo Burnham journey! A good path to follow, in my opinion, is: what. (special on Netflix) then Make Happy (his last stand up before Inside, also on Netflix), then Inside. But if you don't want to do all that homework (it's fun homework but still) then the last, eh, 10 minutes of Make Happy followed immediately by Inside. It will hurt you, but to me it was cathartic. I hope it is for you as well. Again, thank you for your reaction, and I wish you many happy returns!

Hope you decide to do more Bo! I would totally pay for your Patreon to see a full-length reaction to Inside! (Although you should at least watch the Kanye Rant and Are You Happy from his previous special Make Happy first since they directly relate to Inside).

While you could find a lot of dark stuff on the internet prior to '99, you could also find some dark things on the internet when it was just a network between a few universities. But the public face of the internet, the user-friendly internet . . . it has definitely been through several revolutions in character.
