But there is no denying those minds changed the view we had of the cosmos and of reality. Yes, we have tough moments ahead and I am the first to wait the man (the woman better still) which will open the way for a better future. Full respect for the minds we have today.

@@siddharthshrivastava1399 but he didn’t prance on their doorstep and tell them to close their eyes and imagine they’re on a train and elicited an immediate “OH MY GOD YOU FIGURED IT OUT YOU GENIUS.” I’m sure that was a part of Einstein’s discussion and lecture, but it was far less energizing, and far more mathematical. No one looked at that paper and said that it was genius within minutes. They took it home and studied the paper over days.

There was a reason it was a question that nobody was asking, because it took a man of his genius to realise accepted convention was wrong, secondly he had the genius to prove it. E=MC2 is essential to almost all that we think we know. Without this simple formula the potential for atomic/nuclear weapons or energy. To suggest it is ego is preposterous

@@shinnightwood1971 In the late 1800s, James Maxwell managed to develop 4 equations that explained everything involving fields (such as electromagnetism, and gravity). Newton, on the other hand, came up with calculus, the gravitational laws, and his work is pretty much the entire basis for physics as a whole. When he said that Newton got it in the eyes, he meant that it wasn't just a discovery into a new piece of physics; like Maxwell did. The discovery of General and Special Relativity were such monumental discoveries that they uprooted pretty much everything in physics up to that point. And since every area of physics is built on top of Newton's Laws, it shook what we knew in pretty much every aspect of physics, and the universe as a whole. (aside from Quantum Mechanics... it still doesn't wanna play nice with General Relativity; and it's still one of the most important fields of study we're working on to this day!)

I'd argue this has been a bit damaging and is unfair to Einstein. In reality, Einstein was tenacious, imaginative and hard-working as well as incredibly smart. Stereotypes like these teach kids that they can coast on their perceived intelligence and everything else will fall in place.

Haha..for ease I would have just added an assumption that let light be a slow mover instead of train being a fastest one..let light be at speed 100m/s and train at 1m/s ..that way the light from bolts take 1 sec to reach observer at first instance..but greater than 1 and lesser than 1 in the second!.. Infact this assumption also simpifies the torch in a space-ship thought experiment of Einstein which led to general relativity principle!

Note that what's important isn't that the moving person on the train sees the lightning bolts at different times, it is that when he uses the speed of light to determine the time it happened it comes out different for the two lightning bolts.

I remember reading relativity theory in my first year of college. It was magical, i hadn't read anything like that before. Time could be slowed, objects could be shorter and longer in different frames, gravity was no longer a force but warping of spacetime, truth of causality and so on. Einstein indeed was an absolute genius.

Yes, he did. Multiple times. In his original paper, he wrote m = L/c^2, not m = E/c^2, but afterwards, in multiple letters, he wrote E=mc^2 explicitly. It is not hard to find.

The real crazy thing about this is although they can explain stuff like this to us and we get the concept, that's all we will ever understand, is the concept. None of us "normal" people could ever hope to grasp how they figure this sort of thing out, the maths, the science, even having the thought of it in the first place, it's just so far beyond what 99.9% of humans would ever be able to comprehend. What we see in any tv show or movie is probably about 99% dumbed down from what actually happens just so we can get a basic grasp of it.

As a student in physics... personally I cannot watch degrasse tyson or physics girl the same as I did when I was younger, once you grasp the mathematics and actual rigorous foundations of these theories you realise just how surface level all these explanations are. Also, I don't think 99.9% can never understand this type of stuff, it's just that you have to be curious and motivated enough to study these difficult topics

Not really. Between university graduation in 1900 and his PhD he had a hard time finding a job, but he hadn't done anything or written anything yet. He also didn't show up to many of his classes so his professors didn't give him good recommendations. He got his PhD in 1905 - at 26 years old. That same year he wrote 4 major papers - photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity, and mass energy equivalence. The papers were so groundbreaking that it took the best physicist of the day, Max Planck, to recognize it. Regardless, his ideas were accepted rather quickly for physics. By 30 years old he was a professor and a few years later a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. In 1915 he published the general theory of relativity which took about 4 years to prove. By the time it was in 1919, he was world famous. So basically, as soon as he published his 1905 papers he was on the map. There were people who disagreed with him, of course, but they either figured it out or got left behind. Just as Einstein was when quantum mechanics became mainstream.

Side note, he was also a socialist and proponent for world government. Ill concede he was knowledgeable when it came to physics, but he was also an idiot.
