[Geneva Double ATC] Easyjet Medical Emergency + Austrian Go Around in Geneva (GVA/LSGG)

Ғылым және технология

!! This is not played in real time. To make the video the shorter, the audio from ATC was edited to remove gaps. Some aircraft were as well removed from the audio to make the situation less complex. !!
Since now sereval hours, the runway in use is 23. However, the wind is slowly turning. At the beggining of the video, the metar reports a wind of 030°, 6knts. The maximum allowed is 10knt tailwind. The ATC controllers are therefore slowly planning to change the runway configuration towards an ILS 05.
Because of the high tailwind, the aircrafts are approching with a higher speed, than usual, so the separation between them gets tighter. As a results a late go around instructed, and the aircraft is vectored into a downwind for runway 23 again.
At this time, a medical emergency aircraft checks in on arrival frequency and ATC decide to give him a straigh in approach for the runway 05. The accumulation of thoses small details makes the situation interresting.

I’m amazed at the attention that the ATC operator needs. And they need it every day every minute. That’s impressive.

Much better graphics. The plane icons are much clearer than the dots

WOW! Excellent job. I think VASAvaiation may be trying to doing something similar to this, but this is clearly far superior and well done at this point. Good Job.

Thanks! I took really (really !) a lot of time to do it. I could not realease as many as VAS keeping this quality. Since I made this video, I understand why their video are "quickly made". This is impossible to run a yt channel alive with the quality i've inputed in this video ^^ Their reasons to make "less qualtity" are completely valid. So don't be hard with them :)

So was the ATIS still giving 23 at the start of the video as a lot of the pilots were reporting information Yankee and sounded surprised by the vectors to 05?

Yes, I am not sure anymore when they changed the runway, but apparently really really late. I think the ATIS was still not updated when the EZS was instructed to expect 05. The configuration change seemed to be already planned due to tailwind on 23, but I think they decided to change earlier due to the medecial emergency. Maybe because they wanted to make sure that the EZS didn't had to go around due to too strong tailwind on 23 (it is really bad if an emergency aircraft has to go around ... :-) ) This explains also why the EZS was so high on the ILS, because they had planned for 23.

Are you speaking about the landing AUA? Just to remember that the time and distance are not realistic. The separation was in fact very short. Apparently to short if she gave a go around!

2 miles short final for Austrian at the time EZY started take-off roll... Seems really short, I think the go-around was the right decision, but the take-off clearance was a bad one :p

Question for you experts. If the cost of the land were NOT a factor would large international runways be built with more runways? If so, what would the ideal configuration be? As a kid in the 60s I recall an animated film predicting a ring runway around the airport. No one has even tried that yet right?

There was talk about it but probably won’t ever happen, more runways would usually mean capacity to handle more traffic but not by as much as you’d think. Look at Heathrow with only two runways yet is one of the busiest airports in the world

Ring runway doesn't sound as nice when you consider that departure and arrival paths need to be safe (clear of collision paths) and crosswinds/tailwinds would prevent many of the runway directions from being useful at any given moment

It must be difficult for foreign flight crews to understand communications. Yes I know the Air control are doing their best with English, but I cannot understand much of it, so I expect crews will also struggle. Safety Issue?

I must agree with you, unfortunately we are not all lucky to grow up with the english language around us. Most of the world has to learn it later on life (mostly in school). I believe that flight crews are used to understand different accents and voice distortion due to the radio transmission. Furthermore, having a strict and defined phraseology helps in uniforming the communications, thus increasing understanding.

Please God NOOOOOO!!!!! Even today 3years later the technology is nowhere near good enough to be safe. Automation is good at routine tasks, but when something unexpected happens, you want a skilled person there. ESPECIALLY in aviation!

ATC should have never cleared EZY for takeoff with inbound traffic that close. She created a big workload and some frustrated pilots just to try to shave a few seconds off.

Unfortunately at major airports you have to push these sort of gaps all the time, was most likely caused by the slow traffic vacating and whoever was sequencing the aircraft to final should of given more room between the two arrivals.
