It's now 2023, and I am very pleased to inform this video that genetic mosquito engineering has been a success in many countries, and I have visited one called "Singapore". This country uses Project Wolbachia, a name they came up with for a project, in which they released thousands of genetically modified male mosquitoes into the surroundings to mate with female mosquitoes and produce harmless offspring. Some versions of the modified mosquitoes completely block off the birth of female mosquitoes by killing them even before they turn into adults. As a result, more male mosquitoes are hatching than female mosquitoes and dengue cases in Singapore are going down rapidly. I am proud of this country and every country in the world that has tried this genetic mosquito project. This might just be what we all need to overcome malaria, dengue, zika and many other diseases mosquitoes have brought horror upon in this world.

the problem is that an "enclosed environment" large enough to properly model it would be huge, costly, take years, and possibly not be accurate because of the lack of other factors like actual humans to bite (and use to spread the disease) among other things. (you can't put humans in there because they would die. putting this here because inevitably somebody will say "well then just put those other factors in")

Funny enough, I lived in Africa when I was a kid due to my parents being missionaries. I got Malaria once, and that was probably the most miserable week of my life as I felt terrible just standing up, and vomiting was frequent. Though as you can see, I'm not dead, so I suppose that's good. Though a missionary lady that I knew passed away because of Malaria. Personally I wouldn't use the Gene modification for mosquitos though.

I contracted malaria in utero (thanks mum), it was obviously untreatable at the time. The doctors in Papua New Guinea treated mum with tetracycline which gave me grey teeth. Throughout my life I’ve suffered relapsing malaria symptoms and liver problems. Luckily, as an Australian, I’ve access to excellent free public health care. There are so many who don’t. I wouldn’t wish this disease on anyone.

they know the parasite can adapt. the problem is how fast the imune population will spread and how fast the parasite will adapt. its like a roulette, you can make a estimation, but there is no way to be sure. maybe the numbers will say that the estimate time of the imune population become dominant is higher than the probability of the parasite mutate, but then the improbable happen and one single parasite end up adapting just before the old population is eradicated and suddenly all effort is in vain

I think people tend to forget that Kurzgesagt makes a simplified explanation of the issue. Which is awesome but also it means that before we completely agree or disagree, we should be educating ourselves more. Kurzgesagt is awesome because it makes you interested in the topic but it's just a beginner's conversation. You should research more into it and think critically about the situation, pros and cons of both sides before joining an agenda.

Your parallel examples fall short in the nature that using a hammer or a nuke is a one time event. Whereas if we introduce this new genome to the genepool it will be self-replicating, and expanding. And we cannot know for sure WHAT will happen exactly.

I like how slowly, we are figuring out how to bend the world around us. Instead of adapting to new conditions, we make those conditions into what we are used to, since adapting takes longer. If we keep at a pace of advancing like we currently have(and we probably won’t it should get faster) then probably in the next 10,000 years we can bend reality itself.

Thats not the case Anti-GMO supporters dislike the process, because GMO is reletivily new, so we don't know the effects of a long term "GMO-heavy society." I personally think there is far more to gain with GMO than without it, especially with food. There is no way we can feed a population of over 7 billion people with natural methods of cultivating food, GMO makes plants far more resistant to weather and that lets them grow in more environments and seasons. But we don't know how this effects the ecosystem in the long run. Both sides have good points, its not like one side is blatantly retarded.
