I was driving down to Cornwall from London recently with my nephew, who's mostly into 90s dance music, etc. After we left the services, I asked if we could maybe have a bit of my music, and put this on. His face slowly turned from "WTF is THIS 😡?" to "WTF is THIS 😮?" to "WTF is THIS 😍?". I've been feeding him late 60s /early 70s stuff from all sorts of bands since. He was as surprised that this was Genesis as he was that Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was Pink Floyd.

I like both of it - the 90s dance, rock and hip hop stuff I grew up with and few bands, songs and albums from the 60s and 70s - the 80s are often too cheesy.

YT even pops up a prompt at the beginning of the video for a 2-month trial to watch ad-free, the other choice says "No, I want ads". Anyone old enough to remember when the general public finally had access to cable tv? Where I lived, we had OnTV offered in the late 70s, and then SelectTV. We were told we'd pay for access but everything was ad-free. When I first got Road Runner Internet, everything was available - we even had access to all of Usenet. Nobody could call our home after we got hold of that dial-up modem; we were on all the time! Eventually somebody said there was x amount cost to run the servers and access became limited and here came the ads. Whoever continued that downhill slope, I'd like to take on of those old heavy cathode ray monitors we had with our desktop computers and crown them with it down to their shoulders.

Play me Old King Cole That I may join with you All your hearts now seem so far from me It hardly seems to matter now And the nurse will tell you lies Of a kingdom beyond the skies But I am lost within this half-world It hardly seems to matter now Play me my song Here it comes again Play me my song Here it comes again Just a little bit Just a little bit more time Time left to live out my life Play me my song Here it comes again Play me my song Here it comes again Old King Cole was a merry old soul And a merry old soul was he So he called for his pipe And he called for his bowl And he called for his fiddlers three The clock, tick tock On the mantelpiece And I want And I feel And I know And I touch The wall She's a lady, she's got time Brush back your hair And let me get to know your face She's a lady, she is mine Brush back your hair And let me get to know your flesh I've been waiting here for so long And all the time that passed me by It doesn't seem to matter now You stand there with your fixed expression Casting doubt on all I have to say Why don't you touch me, touch me Why don't you touch me, touch me Touch me now, now, now, now, now

I have to say from the perspective of a record producer/audio engineer this song has a lot of very advanced mixing techniques , way ahead of its time for 1971 and not having automation like we do today it was definitely many hands on the board while this was being mixed. This is absolutely one of the best mixes I’ve ever heard , so much going on but it’s very tastefully done . All the fader/volume swells going on just compliment the music so much and the very tasteful use of effects and not going overkill. I still use this song today when teaching audio production .

This track is also Terrific as fuck, and let me tell you, Zeppelin are on the same level as greatness like Genesis in my opinion, as for Beatles well I think they are pretty much overrated as hell, tracks so short I can't even focus on one song that immediately comes the other. Stones the same. So to me, Genesis and Zeppelin must be considerate as all time Greats, in my opinion.

This album and A Trick of the Tail are tied for first place in the Genesis catalogue. Other great albums...but these two are standouts. Progressive Art, really. An era that can likely never be replicated.

A Trick Of The Tail is much better than this album, Nursery Cryme is overrated. Although, The Musical Box is maybe the best song Genesis has ever made. But in a overall sense, this album is not as good as some other albums that most people consider as the same level or even not better than Nursery Cryme

As a college radio DJ in the 70's I fell in love with Genesis during their Foxtrot-Nursery Crime period because their long album cuts like this one would allow me to go pull a few more LP's out of the stacks for the next hour. So I heard this and many others more times than most long songs. Very best of the Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks time.
