Actually, there is a reason why 3D Blast is like that. If I recall correctly, an inspection of the game was coming up and the game still had some issues so the dev decided to make it so if a fatal error occurred it would send you to the level select instead of crashing. Tilting the cartage can do this as well.

I love how in one of the Sonic 1 takes (sonic 2 level select save state on sonic 1), the 68K SMPS driver from Sonic 1 and the Z80 SMPS driver from Sonic 2 are both fighting for control over the sound chips

that 16:17 mark is kinda giving me goosebumps just listening to those distorted instruments from the FM + PSG channels just playing random notes and going hay wire

Actually, since the game is on a CD, the special stage and the results screen is stored in RAM to instantly access to data of that stage, that's because Sonic CD, runs perfectly

I assume the save states contain the Sega CD's RAM at that time, which is why Sonic CD doesn't crash and continues to run normally until you try to load into a zone.

People talking about 1:20 song, but ignoring totally 2:00 song. I accept this as some Sonic stage select song.

A technical explanation for why Sonic CD still runs: Guessing from what the emulator does, Sega CD RAM is stored in the save state. Sega CD games load themselves (or, in this case, a portion of it) into that memory. This is why the most you'll get is a game that won't load after the stage clear screen, and different music from the CD inserted. Take this as a CD swap, but instantaneously. Same goes with PS1 and any other CD-based console that doesn't have an exception handler for when you take the disc out or put in the wrong disc.

Sonic 3D Blast definitely wins due to their creative, but also deceptive crash handling. Effectively when a critical error occurs, program execution does not halt, but instead memory is cleaned up as much as possible and the secret level select screen activated. They did that so Sega QA team would not recognize these as bugs.

Well, Sonic 1 did a great remix of Emerald Hill!

Savestates are just memory snapshots so emulator allows loading of practically anything as long as snapshot size (and probably header) matches with that it expects

and then i saw sonic with black eyes and red pupils with extra realistic blood on his hands

I did this with MAME

Loading wrong savestates in Sega CD will be normal without any errors or chaotic results
