    I went for the 30 amp portable unit. I have three garages and I keep the generator in my third bay. I can wheel it out in front of the third bay, keeping the garage door cracked open, and I have the outlet installed on the wall of my third bay. So the gen isn’t outside. I am able to power about half of my house. Thx for all of your videos! Very helpful.

    Hey Glad you found it helpful. Do be careful with generator inside the garage. I wouldn't do it but please place a CO detector in the garage for extra safety. Be well ;)

    To add to this, you can also go with a generator that runs on propane which burns cleaner (no oil changes) and stores way better then gasoline

    Thanks so much for this! I didn't even know this was an option. Curious to know what your thoughts were on the different brands of generators. I see you have a Westinghouse generator; is that the brand you generally recommend or would you say most of them are pretty much the same? I have been looking at Firman generators (because that's what Costco sells) and have never heard of this brand before. Also, do you recommend tri-fuel generators or is it better to stick with gasoline powered portable generators only?

    Hi Coral. My electrician recommended this unit. He has one himself so that was the best answer for me. I was happy to go with single fuel source for ease of use. I wouldn't want to do the natural gas hook up. The propane might have been a nice back up but this unit was so easy to use with push button start

    Good advice and yes this is DIY if you have the skills. Something you could do also is upgrade to a dual gas/propane unit or replace your carburetor that will except gas or propane with a switch to either or. I personally but have never had to use it have 5 propane units on hand, gas goes bad propane does not. Propane is less efficient. You could also have a quick connect/disconnect to your homes natural gas service. Chase down the natural gas scenario as you do not have to have fuel sitting around, most all small generators will run perfectly fine on natural gas. Less impurities means you change the oil less often but at least once every year and a half due to acidic changes in the oil itself.

    Thanks for the information, but I do not have any gas lines to my home. I have a totally electric house. Would love to go to an all house generator, but the cost is prohibitive. I would need to add the generator and the propane tanks.

    Hello. Great video. Many emergency gas generators has a run time of 9 hours according to it's specs. Will it run for another 9 hours if I refill it with gas? Will it run for 3 days if I keep refilling it with gas? Power outages during blizzards can last for days. Thanks

    Great video! I’m assuming you it’s best to keep the generator empty until used. Old gas would harm the fuel system. Also if it’s down pour you would want the generator in a place not getting wet.

    Best to upgrade your carburetor to Gas/Propane/Natural gas. Inexpensive if you can work on small engines. Yes drain the gas and make sure and run the engine until it runs out of fuel. Never had a small engine not start because of a carburetor not working properly just by running until it quits. I add a fuel shutoff to any small engine that does not have one but most generators do.

  • @DIYHIPChicks

    @DIYHIPChicks

    Maintenance basics - don't store it with gas in it! Keep it from getting wet. Always read the manual for specifics as units vary (all gas, gas w electric ignition etc). As for theft, you can chain it to a tree or fence. Add an air tag for tracking it. I do not run it over night unattended. Good luck

    Thanks for the information on generators. I have a Beacon G6.5 KW portable generator with Rated voltage 120/240V. I cannot figure out how that compared to your generator. I have used it in past storms, but only powered some lights, computer, phones, portable heater and refrigerator. Would this one work with the addition of a 30 amp cord to do what you explained ours does? Thanks

It is when you have a whole-house generator and that is a permanent unit that is planted outside the home. It is tied into natural gas or to propane." How does it not require gasoline, if it is tied into propane or natural gas? Please, explain this matter. Thank you!

    Because you aren't filling it constantly with gasoline. You either are running off natural gas, like a dryer, heater or water heater or have a propane tank where you have a service that it os filled periodically. Hope that helps.

    You should never back feed a generator without an interlock or transfer switch. You risk electrocution to linesmen and yourself by feeding power back through the grid. A licensed electrician should absolutely install the proper outlet.

    She has to leave out a lot of details, to keep the video down to a digestible length. I'm sure she knows that water heaters are hardwired, as well as several other things. She could get into THD, soft starts, diesel generators, inverter generators, and on and on. I love the depth of this topic, but this is a good introduction.
