Occlusion maps are used to create ambient occlusion (dark areas don't receive ambient light and appear darker than white areas - basically it is used to emphasize the shadow parts in a model). What you were doing in this video is more of a roughness map (or specular map, both basically control the reflectivity of the surface - roughness map tells what parts are rough and what parts are smooth/mirror-like, specular tells which parts are diffused and which parts reflective but in modern PBR shading usually everything is treated as reflective, only the roughness of the reflection differs). :) But good advice still!

I always see demos like this where the greyscale image converts nicely into a normal or occlusion map but often, the darker bits of an image are simply more saturated shades, not darker or lower areas. For instance, if you are dealing with a human face, the eyebrows will be dark, but should definitely NOT be recessed.

I guess a photoshop macro which does this in a single click for an entire folder (and manual pollishing afterwards) is faster to create 100 normalmaps for 100 heightmaps than going through the proces in the video a 100 times...

Hightmap is also known as a Roughness it can also be called a gloss map except gloss is the inverted Rough color, also a good option for exporting is as a .DDS-5 it will contain more info at half the file size and is preferred for Game Engines as its automatedly rendred by the GPU and not needing to be converted from the CPU first.

Not sure why you got so many dislikes on this. The normal mapping in Blender is similar to the projection mapping in Max. Both are technically baked. Your other techniques are great! I've used all sorts of methods to make maps out of my photos. For procedural textures, the methods are faster of course. And the plethora of normal map filters in Filter Forge are all pretty fun too.

I could see this being saved as a "macro script". I think Photoshop has macros right? It would be a complete video do demonstrate "image original" -> macro -> create 4,5,6 layers of different "maps" and saving them. It's all about setting values. If you had to do this for a couple dozen materials it could take a couple days just to get mapping images, ugh what a pain. Do you have experience in macros in Ps?

Ad an image to the material of the selected object but don't connect it to any node, if your object have multiple materials then add same image to all materials and make sure the image node is selected, then hit bake

@@archviz_alicia3279 you need to add a texture node with that image you want to bake on, and keep that texture node selected while baking, if your model have multiple materials make sure you add same texture node to all materials and select them to make them active, best way to do that is copy the node and keep pasting on each material one by one, that should automatically make that node selected, also you don't need to connect that node to anything, it just needs to be there, it's weird i know but that's all we have

Occlusion map is a black n white mal that represents surface contacts, edges creases etc, it can be used to add contact shadows, dirt and dust accumulation, scratches wear and tear etc, reflection map represents areas that are reflective, white means reflective and black means rough or non reflective, any value in between will have mixed effect, now you can use substance painter and it will generate it for you along with other maps

I have suggestion for blender 2.8 users. This tutorial is good but in 2.8 version u have to make a material in this empty plane which u want to bake. Without this you can't bake and also u will get the nottification that "No active image found, add a material or bake to an external file". Probably it is obvious for many of you, but for retarded people like me it may be useful. Cheers!
