What an absolutely great chap the Tory chairman is - taking up his airtime to thank volunteers and members. Today the chairman (if they speak to the media at all) would only spend time making political points

In 1955 not all of the UK were covered fully by BBC Television, e.g. BBC Television launched in 1953 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but it would take until 1957 before the whole area of Northern Ireland in the UK to receive BBC TV. The 1959 general election was the first election where the BBC TV service was available nationwide.

Absolutely fascinating to see the charming stiltedness of many who were interviewed and the deference shown. I prefer 1974 as a middle ground between that and the awful modern rudeness.

Such a different world then, so deferential and respectful, as others here have commented. No pop music in those days, although rock and roll was beginning to rumble in America.

BBC Lime Grove Studios was the main television headquarters of BBC Television in 1955. It would be surpassed by the newly opened BBC Television Centre from 1960 onward. BBC Lime Grove had big studios, just a grubby environment to work in.

I think the general election coverage used Studio F at Lime Grove, which was the largest at 11,500 Sq Ft. There were plenty of other studios in Lime Grove which could also be used.

Clement Attlee's last election as leader of the Labour Party--20 years after assuming the leadership in 1935. After stepping down as leader following Labour's election loss, he was given an hereditary peerage--life peerages not being created until 1958--and took his seat in the House of Lords in early 1956.

@@NickSBailey The BBC "house" position, if anything, was sympathetic to the Liberals. Both Robin Day and Alan Watson stood for the Liberals at various stages. Butler was more sympathetic to the Tories reflecting family connections, as were Ian Trethowan and Alastair Burnet. By 1992, Peter Kellner and John Cole were more pro-Labour..

Not unwatchable for me and I'm a party member. What gets me is the blatant sexism, misgyny, patronising attitude towards women but you got to see it in the context of the time. Even though that time seems to have lasted decades, certainly well into the 80s and even the 90s and the 21st century. @@NickSBailey

Since there were no remotes from Wales or Northern Ireland, I suspect that those areas didn't yet have TV, or could only receive network programs from London but unable to feed programs to London.

+altfactor BBC Television was available in Northern Ireland from 1st May 1953 and for the first two years it was limited to the Belfast City area. In July 1955 the Divis transmitter boosted BBC coverage to more than 60% of Northern Ireland. Since this election was held in May 1955 Northern Ireland wasn't greatly covered by TV. In Wales the BBC began broadcasting television from 15th August 1952. Probably because of cost and maybe the lack of large audience in Wales little coverage was brought from here in 1955. Remember televisions were still very expensive in 1955.

The 1955 election coverage was broadcast from the BBC Lime Grove studios in London. The famous BBC Television Centre would not be opened until June 1960, and I think the first general election broadcast from the television centre was the 1964 election. I might be wrong, but I do know from at least the 1970 election onwards until 2015, television centre's Studio TC1 was home to the BBC election coverage on television, before decamping to Elstree in 2015.
