It is worth noting that Gene didn't just co-write and act in Young Frankenstein, he was the one that first came up with the idea for the film and then asked Mel to direct it. So depending on how you see it you could say that it is a Gene Wilder film first and a Mel Brooks film second.

imo, this film should be Gene's best remembered performance. Whilst Willy Wonka was very iconic, Young Frankenstein is practically Gene's baby. He made this film, and it's amazing

I read Wilder's autobiography years back and I wasn't terribly impressed, but it did have one amazing story about making Young Frankenstein. Apparently, Mel Brooks absolutely hated the 'Putting On The Ritz' scene in the script, telling Wilder that it would never work and was sheer hubris, and this escalated into a screaming bitter fight. It was so bad that afterwards, when Wilder was at home, he was genuinely worried that he'd just destroyed his friendship with Brooks, and nevermind the movie. . Except then Brooks calls, sounding like nothing had happened, and says the Ritz scene stays in the picture. Why? Because he started the fight to could see if Wilder would fight for it. He still didn't like the idea, but Wilder's sheer passion told Brooks to trust him on it. And, of course, it became the most iconic scene in the movie.

Much as I love watching Wilder flip out, I think his best work is when he plays understated characters. Wonka is completely deadpan, sarcastic, neutral chaotic - he feels otherworldly, fey even. Meanwhile, the Waco Kid is completely chill; nothing phases him, yet he brings a certain gravitas into an otherwise ridiculous film. Wilder had a masterful way of bringing undercurrents of unexpressed emotion to his characters through pauses and facial expressions.

The one thing I truly regret is a time in Chicago, when I saw Gene Wilder and they ha Richard Pryor ( I kid you not) were sitting in a Lums Restaurant . They had just finished promoting Silver Streak on a local morning talk show. As I was walking over to my boyfriend’s house on North Avenue, where the Lums was, I saw them in the window, they saw me and waved and smiled, literally waving me in to the restaurant. I was so overwhelmed and shy; I kept going! How messed up is that?!!? I regret that to this day!

For me, what makes Wilder special is the amount of pathos he brought to his characters. All of his best performances were of characters with a lot of pain or sadness at their core, driving their actions. And he was never afraid to let that pain show through legitimately, even when he was being funny, which ended up making even his silliest characters feel much more sympathetic and relateable. . Like, for me one of his moments of sheer brilliance was in his introduction in Blazing Saddles: "A man drink like that, and he don't eat, he is going to DIE!" / "When?" ...With that one word, the Kid becomes someone the audience wants to root for, not just a comic sidekick, and the relationship between him and Bart becomes much richer as well.

No mention of his late wife Gilda Radner? She was a comedy legend herself on SNL. She passed away in 1989 due to ovarian cancer. He founded a cancer research non-profit in her name. They starred in 3 movies together, 2 of which he directed. Omission notwithstanding, a great mini documentary on Gene. Thank you for putting this together!

If this had been simply a biography then talking about Gilda would have been appropriate. But this was about his acting style, which she had no influence over. Though I love the 3 films they did together, it wasn't truly collaborative as with Mel Brooks or Richard Pryor. They met on the first and the other two contained parts written for her so they could work together. It's apples and oranges. Besides, once you mention Gilda, you have to talk about her death and what he did after with cancer awareness. It would take over the video and be a huge sidetrip. He was with his last wife far longer (25 years) yet she gets no mention by name and is present in only a few seconds of this video. Because this is about his acting style.

That moment in young Frankenstein where he stabs himself in the leg... when he said "Little b****** shot me in the back" in Blazing Saddlers, his whole ability to play off Pryor... These reasons and so many others will always be why Gene is and will always be a treasure to whoever gets to see him perform. He will be missed, but thanks to how movies work, he will always be remembered.

Thank you for this excellent retrospective. I first saw Wilder in Silver Streak and fell in love with him. In that one film, he's a comedian, an action hero, a mystery solver, and a romantic lead. I thought, "This guy can do anything." I never had cause to change that opinion. Thanks to my mum for introducing him to me. One of her favourite films was Young Frankenstein. "Put... ze candle... back!" always brought on fits of giggles. If Wilder is performing in the next world, my mum has snagged a front row seat. 😁

I love this. My favorite performance by Mr. Wilder was Fredrick Frankenstein. In this film is my all time favorite scene. After locking himself in with the creature and begging in a hilarious rant to be let out, he turns to his creation and begins to compliment him. On this scene, the comedy slowly seeps away as Wilder shows how easily the Frankenstein madness can take him. And with his booming, "MY NAME IS FRANKENSTEIN!" We see he's accepted his destiny. And no matter what, I get chills in that scene. In a Mel Brooks parody sits this amazing scene that gives me chills. Amazing man and an amazing actor.

If Gene had stopped trying to make people laugh after making his mother wet herself from laughter, he would have already done more than most in making the world a little brighter. However, he went on to make so many countless others laugh just as genuinely and intensely, for years and years to come. Who knows how many he saved. Just how many peoples lives he touched and inspired will never be known. In the same way he will never be forgotten. I hope someday to see him, maybe, in a world of pure imagination.

His face, his voice, his delivery... and whatever it is going on behind his eyes. A totally unique actor. What a mensch!
