Diddy giving artist back their publishing LONG, LONG, LONG after all the millions of dollars has dried up has got to be by far the most disrespectful thing I've seen a black person do to another black person in ages. Dude was eating off of everybody else's plates for years and now he thinks he's doing "something" throwing them back scraps is straight trash...🤬🤬🤬🤬

The point he’s making and that Mark Curry made (and that a lot of people are missing because they are arguing against them) is that he’s giving it back AFTER it’s been milked to death. He had ownership when the publishing was super ripe and the industry was fruitful, it’s not like that anymore. The artist MIGHT make a dollar or two if they’re lucky but the millions they could’ve made went to P and his family. So basically it’s worthless unless they just want to be able to say “I own my words again”. Also it could’ve been done quietly but that’s not how he operates when he’s trying to look good to the public.

What they didn’t realize is they are paying that money back ten fold and all the recoup money they can kiss goodbye. I don’t even know if they were getting all their show money back then either. This was before 360 deals.

Unless you rapped you got a free ride… the rappers had to write the verses but everything else puff paid for….. that’s the reason most didn’t have a career after him cause puff made they songs/ albums… besides cleaning up his image he ain’t got time to market the material the way the artists would…. I’m sure he still getting a percentage… the reason curry mad is cause he ain’t pop then and really not gonna now puff not involved and curry was nice he bodied the song he was on but puff didn’t really give him play

LIKE YOU CLEARLY STATED, the music/entertainment industry is not smooth and has never been which is why YOU HIRE AN ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER and have them READ AND EXPLAIN everything in the contract! It's that simple! If there's something in the contract an artist does not like or agree with upon reading the contract BEFORE signing, at that point the artist can restructure/renegotiate the terms in the contract (including publishing rights, intellectual property, royalties, etc...). ITS UP TO THE ARTIST TO BE DILIGENT! 💯💯💯 Furthermore, if an artist has INVESTED in his or herself up to that point (studio time, EP's, marketing, a manager, etc.) and can't invest in an ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER, then they shouldn't become an artist 🤷🏾‍♂️💯...

I totally get Gene's point. Diddy might have leveraged their catalogs to get certain deals. It would have been ideal to have the publishing when those songs were selling in record stores or when they were getting considerable airplay. Now many of those songs aren't selling or going to get played on radio to generate significant royalties. But the good thing about getting it back is you never know which song a music supervisor might want for a television/movie scene and if you own the publishing, you're getting paid. Also, many young producers (some who are signed to major labels), sample songs from the 90's that may not be getting consistent radio play anymore. But if it gets sampled, now the publisher is getting paid based on how the new song is doing. So if the new song is a hit and you're getting paid good! A few examples of this in recent years are Lil Nas X "Old Town Road" sampling Nine Inch Nails "34 Ghosts IV"; Tyler the Creator "Wusyaname" sampling H-Town "Backseat (Wit No Sheets)"; and Drake "Nonstop" sampling Mack Daddy Ju "My Head is Spinnin".

To your last part, exactly. Not to mention the fact they can remix their own songs and not have to worry about cutting in anybody else that doesn't have a writing or production credit. That alone is a big deal, especially if the original song is a strong enough foundation on its own. This is one of those situations where the artists, especially if they don't have a lot of residual income, have the responsibility of doing something with their previously released music. You can't expect Puff (or anyone) to cut you a big check solely because you were a part of a big song almost 30 years ago. Shop the song around, remix it, and so forth.

I figured it was a publicity stunt to make his "Love" rebrand more believable. The music is worth what you make it. There are plenty of ways to capitalize off a record when you own your publishing; They could license it for movies, tv shows and commercials because they now own the rights. And with all these new artists remixing songs from the 90's, they could make money if their lyrics or song melody is sampled... and they'll make chump change from streaming. I wouldn't say it's worth "nothing" and either way you look at it, it's a win for the artist because (1) they have full control and (2) Puffy no longer eats off their pub.

This is why I never thought puffy had a change of heart or anything, because other than biggie smalls the rest of those artist, their music was only worth something when it came out. They could’ve made a couple million back in the day but it’s not like any of those songs were legendary. Biggie is the only one from bad boy that has music that can be used for soundtracks, commercials, etc. I I’m not saying he’s the only one that can be used because of anything legal I’m saying he’s the only one that has music that’s going to get use because he’s looked at as a legendary artist today and everyone knows his songs. If you go back and you look at the other artist that got their publishing back you can’t seriously say that you think Warner Bros. Or Paramount are really going to pay any money for any of those songs to be used in a movie trailer coming out? I’m not seeing nobody remembers it, but I’m just saying there’s not enough people there other than songs that biggie did. If her feet really wanted to look out for them, he would pay them the money that he made off those songs 25 years ago. He can afford it now it’s not like any of those songs individually made millions. Everyone of those songs by themselves probably made a couple million and that would honestly change the life of everyone that got robbed of their money back then.

A lot of people commenting don’t understand why he’s saying the publishing really isn’t worth anything now, & think that he’s lying, but he’s actually telling the truth. You see, what makes an artists’ publishing valuable is how often it’s played on the radio, downloaded & used in commercials or movies. Bad Boy artists’ music was hot back in the 90’s & early 2000’s, but it’s not hot anymore today. Think about it. How often do you hear their music played on the radio, or in movies or commercials? Not too many artists are popular enough for their music to remain popular decade after decade. Now, artists such as Prince & Michael Jackson, their publishing is very valuable because their music is still played on the radio, downloaded & used in commercials & movies. That’s the difference & what Gene is talking about. Puffy kept their publishing while their music was hot & only gave it back to them because their music is no longer popular

@@M.Polo517 I think many get a raw deal but on the flip side many may not be deligent with their money. They ignore the business side until they’re broke. Furthermore, everyone first deal isn’t ideal bc of the risk.

When you own your publishing you control the rights to your music. So anybody streaming your music. You get the revenue from it. But the thing is when years go on your music might not be hot no more and nomody is streaming it

Gene Deal isn't lying, Puffy robbed so many of his artists money lol. Dude talent level was insane, Puffy the type that will either help his artist rise to fame and then screw them over. Or when he's working on a new experience group of artists and when it doesn't pans out. He will leave them in the dust. That's why, I'm glad Biggie didn't signed Lil Kim/Cease to Bad Boy records. Puffy had: Craig Mack, Biggie, Total, 112, The Lox, Mary J Blige, Loon, Usher, Mase, Making The Band, Danity Cane, Shyne, Faith Evans, Black Rob, Carl Thomas, Boyz N Da Hood, Gorilla Zoe, Cassie ( he was messing around with) Young Joc, even Young Joc said in an interview on Vladtv. Puffy is a cool dude. But business wise, don't make those moves with him 😂

They always have the option to be regular people like you and me. People don't understand that business is about using someone else while they use you. Ya'll be wanting freebies and handouts when what you need is a strategic mind and hustle to turn nickels into dollars. Diddy went from an intern to a mogul doing just that. Not by telling his bosses they should give him things just because.

Aubrey from Danity Kane said the SAME thing and is also alleging that something is about to come out about Diddy which may be motivating him to do this.
