Fun Fact: Mel Brooks wrote and composed most of the music in each one of his films. He was a very skilled musician as well as a comedian. He once said that music was his first love, and film music in particular. He also that that if he hadn't made it as a filmmaker, he would have loved to have been a composer.

The thing about Mel Brooks" films is, that when he makes a genre film, like Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety or Young Frankenstein, they are full of love for the genre he is lampooning. You really need to react to Young Frankenstein, which is probably my favourite Mel Brooks film. Also worth watching is his first film The Producers and The Twelve Chairs.

If you watch the behind the scenes of Blazing Saddles he thought the film would ruin him and his reputation at the time and get him blacklisted in Hollywood. People back then were offended too but he pressed on anyway with the support of his writing partner Richard Pryor and Wilder. In response to the 'it couldnt be made today' people Brooks has said it couldnt be made back then either! Ive always liked the double meaning of this quote and what it means for creatives who feel stifled by societal norms.

The melody for the "Jews in Space" song would later be re-used for the sort-of title song from "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". Also, I read online that the title (including the "Part One") comes from a book written by Sir Walter Raleigh. He had intended to write a Part II (and possibly even more parts), but he came down with a bad case of decapitation.

This movie had all kinds of classic comedy actors of the old school of comedy, from what was called the Borsch Belt. Like Sid Caesar, Bea Arthur, Henny Youngman and yes that was Hugh Hefner. The Borsch belt were all the Russian Jewish of Vaudevillian fame and the old TV shows of the fifty's.

Dom DeLouise played in nearly all of The Smokey and the Bandit movies as well as Cannon Ball Run with Bert Reynolds. When they started to try and remake shows like magnum pi macguyver not to long ago they weren't intresting to watch at all. Then they messed the capt. marvel up from its original format it was horrible. If you watch the show from the 70's the character was a teenage kid in the middle of the desert living in a trailer. Now in the show in order to change into capt. marvel he had to say shaazam to become the character. Now capt. marvel and shaazam are two separate super heros. trivia According to Mel Brooks, the Moses scene was a last minute addition. "Sometimes, you will get very lucky, and the set will give you ideas for jokes", Brooks said in a 2012 interview with the Directors Guild of America. One day, he was gazing out at the scenery that had been built for the caveman segments, when the gears in his head started turning. "I immediately thought, 'Well, where do I go from here?'" Brooks recalled. Heading into the shoot, his plan was to "skip the Bible and go to Rome." But eventually, he realized that the Stone Age set might enable him to explore another chapter in world history. With a few minor alterations, Brooks converted his fake caves into a mountaintop, and the Moses bit was born. 78 of 78 found this interesting | Share this The vestal virgins (who took the oath of chastity) in Caeser's Palace in "The Roman Empire" segment were all Playboy playmates. The film's closing credits declare that the "Vestal Virgins were portrayed by Playboy playmates and models". Hugh Hefner (Playboy's patron) appears as the pipe-smoking entrepreneur talking about his invention, the "centerfold". 103 of 104 found this interesting | Share this Beforehand, it was agreed that Orson Welles would receive $5,000 per day in exchange for his services. Figuring that he'd have to spend five eight-hour days recording and re-recording these lines with Welles, Mel Brooks paid him $25,000 up front. But by noon on the first day, Welles had recorded his lines to perfection. "Oh, my god, I could've paid you $5,000", Brooks lamented. After kicking himself for a few minutes, the funnyman asked Welles how he planned to spend the bounty. "Cuban cigars and Sevruga caviar", Welles replied. 95 of 96 found this interesting | Share this In The Old Testament segment, the writing on the tablets are the correct two word Hebrew version of the commandments: Don't kill, Don't steal, Don't lie, et cetera. The five more Don'ts on the third tablet that Moses accidentally drops, are: Don't impregnate, Don't laugh, Don't buy, and the last one: Don't break. The letters of the fourth commandment on that tablet make the sounds of TLRT, but that's not a word in Hebrew (could be a production mistake). 81 of 82 found this interesting | Share this This movie is responsible for popularizing the catchphrase, "It's good to be the King". The expression is said by Mel Brooks during "The French Revolution" segment. Mel repeated this line in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). 100 of 102 found this interesting | Share this DIRECTOR TRADEMARK (Mel Brooks): (sequel): At the end of the movie, a trailer is shown for "History of the World: Part II". A sequel was never intended; the "Part I" in this movie's title is a joke. 111 of 114 found this interesting | Share this During the "Jews in Space" sequence, the camera moves through the center of the Star of David-shaped spaceships and some Hebrew letters are visible on the interior wall, just under the guns. The word these letters spell is "Kosher". 46 of 46 found this interesting | Share this The music used in the "Jews in Space" segment was recycled into the "Men in Tights" number from Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). 66 of 67 found this interesting | Share this On June 7, 1981, just four days before the movie opened in theaters, Mel Brooks was interviewed by The New York Times and mentioned the possibility of a sequel. "Will there be a History of the World: Part II?" he asked, rhetorically. "No. Maybe a part four, never a part two." 60 of 61 found this interesting | Share this Mel Brooks had doubts about the Inquisition number. "I don't know how audiences are going to react to the Spanish Inquisition sequence", Brooks told Mademoiselle. As he put it, trying to get a laugh out of any scene that involved "Jews on racks" could be "very dangerous". Brooks admitted, "I got a lot of write-ins from rabbis." 40 of 40 found this interesting | Share this Richard Pryor was originally cast in two Mel Brooks movies but had to be replaced. With Blazing Saddles (1974), Brooks was unable to secure financing for the film due to Pryor's controversial reputation, leading to him being replaced by Cleavon Little. Pryor was also originally cast in this movie, but his infamous drug-related accident - catching fire, getting severely burned - occurring just before filming began, led to Gregory Hines making his film debut as Pryor's replacement. 93 of 96 found this interesting | Share this At the beginning of the French Revolution segment, the street sign reads "Rue De Merde", which is French for "Shit Street". 71 of 73 found this interesting | Share this Mel Brooks claimed that the budget, an estimated $11 million, exceeded that of his previous three movies combined. Particularly expensive was the Inquisition scene, in which the set cost $1 million. By comparison, the entire budget of The Producers (1967) was $941,000. 35 of 35 found this interesting | Share this When the Court Spokesman is whispering "Remember thou art mortal", that actually happened. When a Roman General entered Rome after a successful campaign, he had a servant riding in his carriage with him, whispering that in his ear. 64 of 67 found this interesting | Share this Sir John Hurt did this movie because he had just gotten through doing two dramatic movies, and said that he wanted to have some fun and do a comedy. Hurt starred in the title role in the Mel Brooks produced The Elephant Man (1980). That movie later became the subject of a comedy itself, with "The Elephant Man" musical segments in The Tall Guy (1989). This wasn't the last time Hurt and Brooks worked together, as Hurt would later cameo in Spaceballs (1987), spoofing his character from Alien (1979). if you want more information here is a link www.imdb.com/title/tt0082517/trivia/

History of the World is hands down my favorite movie of all time. You absolutely have to watch it multiple times and watch what's going on in the background. I could damn near quote that movie from opening credits til the copyright date rolls at the end.

I'm really looking forward to you guys watching more Mel Brooks movies. There's Spaceballs, of course, but there's also Robin Hood : Men in tights, Dracula : dead and loving it, Life Stinks, and then there are 2 versions of "The Producers", the original one from 1968, and the more recent version from 2005, starring Will Ferrel, Nathan Lane, and Mathew Broderick, among others.

this isn't one of mel brooks' better films. the opening sequence was a parody of the film "2001." the cave man sequences starred Sid Caesar. he had one of the biggest 50s comedy shows called "your show of shows" which gave brooks, carl reiner and woody allen their starts as comedy writers and performers.

"High Anxiety" is really good. It's a spoof on Alfred Hitchcock movies. Brooks showed the script to Hitchcock, who loved it. I still say you ought to compare Brooks with Woody Allen films. "Take The Money And Run", "Sleepers", "Bananas", "Love and Death" are good places to start. Then there's Oscar winner "Annie Hall".

Not sure if you've seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" but the very first scene with "our Fore Fathers" was a parody of the opening section of that movie. So correct about Brooks having a group of actors he likes to work with: among them was our inventive cave man, played to perfection by the great comedian, Sid Caesar. Brooks was on the writing staff of "Your Show of Shows", one of the very early tv variety shows, hosted by Caesar. Here he is showing us his "patter" talent: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pnmpsdOnd9azeKw.html. Also here were Harvey Korman, from "Blazing Saddles", Kahn, of course!; Cloris Leachman from "Young Frankenstein", and with Korman from "High Anxiety". And several others.
