I can't believe there's a Brit who doesn't know the words to Bohemian Rhapsody by heart! Queen at Live Aid is probably THE best live performance ever recorded.

Queen had amazing music and performances. We were lucky to have Queen + Adam Lambert keep it alive for so many years. They were the hottest band in the world prior to Covid. Selling out stadiums in Asia, Australia, North America and Europe. Too bad Freddy died so young.

I was away camping with the Scouts at the time of live aid. We had a treat day and were stood in a nearishby chip shop ordering our dinner when this came on the TV above the counter. Needless to say that was the longest it ever took to eat a fish supper.

  • @donaldakin492

    @donaldakin492

I would beg to slightly differ; they crossed boundaries and mixed genres, but with a definite style. In fact, that crossing and mixing were features of their style, but not the whole crown. Soaring, layered vocals, precise and also layered guitar, thundering drums, unforgettable bass lines, high energy and a heavy dose of classical influence would be a start on describing their style. Majestic, never seedy or inconsequential.

So glad you enjoyed this and hope you enjoy more from Queen. It's an amazing Journey!! Freddie Mercury is a Legend!! Freddie, the singer, studied Graphic Art and Design. Brian May, the guitar player, is an Astrophysicist. Roger Tayler, the drummer, has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. John Deacon, the bass player, has a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering. If not for their passion for music, the world could have ended up with another dentist, engineer, graphic artist, and astronomer. I will forever miss Freddie and will always be grateful for all that he offered to share with the world. RIP Freddie. ❤

Me: pound pound clap; pound puns clap we will we will rock you! Wife: they did that one too? Me: do I need to go down their entire song list to figure out you know them? Queen’s impeccable harmonies are easily recognizable and a common thread on their recordings. It’s interesting to note that the a cappella opening is only Freddie singing all the harmonic parts which are multi tracked together. The operatic section is just three voices multitracked close to 200 times to create the sound of a chorus.

The first time I saw Queen was soon after this song came out in the U.S. Even before the concert started, the audience was standing on the seats. The band opened with Rhapsody (any other band would have closed with their new hit as the closer). Freddie wasn't onstage but we heard his voice. Then when the curtain opened, there was a backlit screen with a male silhouette, and just as the fast part of the song began, Freddie jumped through the screen and finished the song with the rest of the band. The audience went crazy - by then we were standing on the armrests. Freddie looked out at us, raised a glass of champagne, smiled and said, "Hello, my children!" What an evening. (I saw the band twice more in the 70s, my favorite era of them.) On the second tour there was a part of the show where it was just Freddie onstage, playing piano and singing a few songs. Then he left and Brian played alone with a tape loop, adding layers upon layers of chords, finally ending with the whole band onstage. Queen concerts were memorable! Brian once said that no matter how big the venue, even the person at the very back felt that Freddie was singing directly to them. One of his many gifts.

Freddy wrote 3 songs and put them together, for this, did most of the singing, high notes, were the drummer, all 4 wrote hits, and graduated from university, had careers out of music, one worked with Nasa. Freddy was an arts student, worked on his costumes with Zandra Rhodes. He sang opera too. The guitarist with the stripes, Brian May, made that guitar, at home, with his dad. Another one bites the dust, we are the champions, don't stop me now. You have heard their songs, sports fans in america had no idea they had this music from Queen.

If you asked people what the top 5 rock/pop songs of all time are, this would almost certainly be in that list. Angelina Jordan, at age 13, covered this song on America's Got Talent. The surviving members of Queen tweeted how much they loved it. Later they gave her permission to copyright her version of the song. A very classy gesture. Thanks...loved this review!

Please go down that rabbit hole. You will be blown away. Freddie Mercury had perfect pitch, musically trained, and Bohemian Rapsady was amazing to see how they put this all together. I'm 67, and still love this music after 50 years. ❤❤

Queen. What a great and tragic story. This song was initially banned from radio stations back in it's day due to it's length. I read the terrible review it got in Melody Maker back then. My older bought it anyway. One of Britain's greatest ever rock bands. Some might argue the greatest. This old man thanks you. 💙💙💙

The music of the 60’s and 70’s, the music I grew up to (yes, I am an ancient lol). So much of the music from that era is timeless. Groups like Queen, CCR, BOC, Pink Floyd, LED Zeppelin, Deep Purple, as well as the Mommas and Poppas, The Carpenters, Simon and Garfunkel, and the list goes on. Us old geezers grew up to some amazing music. #hangovergang forever 🤙🏽

You have a wicked sense of humour! I was the same at your age and I approve 😀. The music of the 70's was the music of my teens, listening to artists as varied as Donna Summer, The Clash, Electric Light Orchestra, Abba, Mike Oldfield, The Stranglers, Fleetwood Mac, T Rex, Elton John, Sparks, David Bowie, The Police, Steeleye Span, Kate Bush... the list goes on! I suspect that if you dip into older music you might be surprised by how creative and talented artists were before music began to be manufactured in the studio. That said, It was the era when the likes of Gary Numan, Jean-Michelle Jarre and Vangelis emerged.

It is a full song, not a mash up. It's from their album, a night at the opera. I suspect you have heard more Queen, We Are The Champions or We Will Rock You for instance. You just didn't know who it was. The guitarist with crossed legs is Brian May, so definately a man, and he still has the same hairstyle I think.💙

I'm a boomer, and grew up this music. When Freddie Mercury took Bohemian Rhapsody to the recording studio and Queens promoter he was told it was too long, nobody would listen to it, but history tells. They did record a 'radio' version that was shorter as a lot of radio stations refused to play the original as it was too long. But then a lot of songs from this same era are long. Also their music was sung pure, no auto tune, no computer enhancement.

Spot on comments! You are sitting on a pot of gold young man! You just watched perfection (actually there re 5 genres in this song effortlessly flowing all together). The video you watched triggered the creation of MTV. Queen dropped BoR 50 years ago. When that happened, many people lives changed. If you dive down into their music maybe yours will change too. Queen is the best of all times! Period. Pure music as God intended it to be. We are just blessed that they shared their talent with us. Very very blessed.

Old lady here and proud! We got to grow up in a time when there was no auto tune or pitch correction in singers' voices, and the talent was massive. You really should watch their live shows because they're so much better than the recorded versions. You won't regret it!

If you are going to do more Queen, remember that they are at their best live, so "Somebody To Love" live in Montreal, "Love of My Life" live in Rio, "Under Pressure" from Wembley - not forgetting the great "Live Aid" concert at Wembley too. There are far too many to list, but you are going to get so many more recommendations you won't know what to do with them. I've been a Queen fan since the early 70's (yes, I AM old!) and it brings joy to my heart to see young ones like you discovering them 50 years after they first appeared. Great reaction!

Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 from their fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera when I was 13 years old and I can still belt out those lyrics. Freddie Mercury died in November 1991 and he is very much missed. Listen to as many Queen songs as you can because there is so much more to them than just ‘Rhapsody’.
