This recording is now attributed to be the first-ever music video. Prior to this there were films of concerts. This vid was the first structure the presentation of a song that had it's own visually artistic qualities. It also broke all the rules of Pop songs in it's structure and length. 50 years on it continues to be brilliant no matter how many times you hear it.

My first exposure to this piece was that sort of experience for me. I was crossing the living room and broke my stride mid-step because of both the sound and the unique video. I hadn't seen anything like it before. And I stood and watched to the end and knew that something important had happened in music.

Joel, this was 1975. It was number one in the British charts for literally 9 weeks. It was also number one again in 1991 just after the lead singer Freddie Mercury died. Now you've discovered them you're on the start of a very long journey! I saw them live in 1982 and 1986. What a phenomenal band.

Twice Christmas number 1...... 1975 & 1991

I remember when this was released in1976 and although it may look a little dated to young eyes it was ground breaking at the time. Music videos were also in their infancy, so we had never seen anything like this. Songs usually lasted a couple of minutes in those days, so this running as long as it did with the numerous changes in tempo and style of singing was outstanding. It stayed at number one for about 6 weeks. It really put Queen on the map.

This is the greatest song ever, and that is fact because it always comes out top of surveys through the decades. This video, from 1975, as is the song, was the first pop video ever shown on British TV, and the reason was that Queen were on tour in Japan at the time of recording Top Of The Pops, so they needed something for the show. Christmas No.1 in 1975 and lasted at the top for 9 weeks. Also it was re-released in 1991 when Freddie Mercury died, and was Christmas No.1 again. Nobody could EVER dislike this song 😀

It explains how both the band and this song came about. Sadly Freddie Mercury, the lead singer died in 1991. A great loss to the world.

It brings attention to some songs Otherwise its not accurate and doesn't show Freddie fairly. Freddie knew Tim at college two years before he left smile. Freddie lived with Roger and they ran a market stall before Queen. Roger said he and Brian were giving up but Freddie encouraged them to start again with him but with his vision of the band. Roger and Brian released solos before Freddie Freddie did his solo between working with Queen They finished their world tour for the works 2 months before live aid..

One of the greatest UK bands ever. They were so unique. You will have heard a lots of their songs I’m sure. ‘ another one bites the dust’ for instance. Do yourself a favour and listen to their songs you will be blown away. Look up their Live Aid concert appearance, they stole the show.

@@Ionabrodie69 Of course personal opinion & taste.. Other great British bands include Pink Floyd with the amazing David Gilmour on guitar. Different music styles in general & in lead guitarist style. Theres no "V" (versus) here, they're great in their own ways. 🇬🇧

Just think what we went through in 1975 ? When we were 13 , our music teacher was at music college with Mr Mercury we were in a daze .

I'm old enough to remember seeing this when it first aired on TV. I was equally blown away by how brilliant it was and still is. Queen were just fantastic. There's way too many songs to recommend but you really should watch the Live Aid performance. You'll recognise a few songs. Guaranteed!!

As a child of the 80s, this song was terrifying & beautiful at the same time.

So nice to see this young man's life get enriched by hearing this performance.

The singer, did the harmony himself, in layers, Freddy Mercury, is the writer, blender of 3 very different songs, is the piano player, costume designer, opera and rock lover, so he wrote this - the first "Rock Opera." The lead guitarist, Brian May, plays the guitar he built, at home with his dad. All 4 band members finished uni and had careers outside of music as well as winning all the music awards for years. This song is longer than radio stations wanted to play, Freddie wouldn't budge. Can you imagine this on your car radio, when you had no idea what was coming next?

Important to note : only in the opening section was it just Freddie’s voice multilayered - in the “operatic section” it was Freddie, Brian and Roger all three multilayered to get that whole-choir effect.

In 1975 the only technology readily available was the multiple track tape recorder. Queen put this together by layering and splicing segments from different tracks. No computers, no autotune, just pure talent, hard work and genius. This technique followed from pioneering work of Delia Derbyshire in the 1960s with the BBC Radiophonics Workshop. Delia created music by physically cutting up tape and changing speed, hence pitch. The Dr. Who theme is her work.

Ok, I am blown away by the fact that you have reached the age of 18 and have not heard of Queen, let alone Bohemian Rhapsody. I can only recommend you look them up! Amazing to watch your reaction, believe me when I say, when this first came out in the 70's everyone was reacting just like that. Something so totally different, and still regarded today to be a masterpiece. And like so many of the other comments here, please go and watch their 'Live Aid' appearance. Wembley Stadium 1985. That really was something special. And I am sure you will have heard of plenty of their songs before, even if you did not realise it was Queen.

I wished I could go back to the day when I first heard this track. All I remember was it completely blew my mind and it’s without doubt one of the greatest songs ever written. Love your reaction, give it a few more listens and it starts to make sense.

Hi Joel, i'd highly recommend watching Freddie Mercury performing with Montserrat Caballé singing "Barcelona". It's something a bit different as Montserrat was an accomplished Opera singer, regarded as having one of the finest voices of any generation. I'd love to see your reaction to it! 'Bohemian Rhapsody' must be part of American culture these days after being used in the 1992 'Wayne's World' movie. It had an unforgettable scene of the guys singing along to it on the car radio on their ride through the night-time suburban streets in an old 1976 AMC Pacer.

I was 13 when this song was number 1 in the charts in 1975, and us kids kept singing it all the time. Loved it then, love it now!! It's about Freddie coming to terms with being gay. When Freddie sings he has killed a man, he means he has accepted that the straight man he pretended to be has gone. He was a lovely caring and very shy (when not on stage) man, who although gay, had a woman as the biggest love of his life. A hugely fascinating, and very much missed man. RIP Freddie x ps Bohemian means ' unconventional in an artistic way, and Rhapsody means ' a piece of music with no formal pattern that expresses emotion, so Bohemian Rhapsody is a perfect title for the song.

Gotta love Queen. I grew up to their music playing all the time in the 90’s. The show must go on is musical genius. Silly fact, this was made in the 70’s and the face effect where it goes into the distance was them putting the camera next to the playback monitor creating the effects. No computer graphics back then!

This was made back in the 70s. It’s truly iconic. Given you’d not heard of Queen, I suspect you’d also not heard of its lead singer, Freddie Mercury. Yeah, it was well known Freddie asked Rodger to sing "that bit" and each time said "no; higher" until Rodger was, in his words, "taking the piss"... then Freddie said "That's it". ... Amazing...

@@pissedupreactions3077 That’s what the movie said. Roger himself said if you pay attention to the scene in the movie, he’s re-singing the same note, not actually going higher. That they were ALWAYS pushing in those early days to see how high his voice could go (and Freddie’s as well), but it wasn’t Freddie sitting at the board literally going “higher, higher”. That was dramatic license.

I love this song and have since it first hit in the US in 1975. Iconic song. The really high voice is Roger Taylor, the drummer. Queen is four men and long hair was a thing back in the 70's, most rockers had it as did a majority of the young people. Thank you for your perfect reaction.

My mother who was in her 50s at the time heard it on the car radio, loved it and went straight out and bought the record.

You should watch Queen in Live Aid next, absolutely amazing and there's a good story behind it!

You should have seen our reaction when this came out in 1975. I was a teenager and it blew everyone's minds. If you've ever been to a sporting event then you've heard at least 1 Queen song before this. 😂 Listen to We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You by Queen. There is sooo much talent to explore in different genres for decades before autotune was invented in the late 90's. Back then you had to be able to really sing and perform..especially before MTV was created in the 80's.

Interesting facts: Lead singer Freddie Mercury was a serious Opera buff and Brian May, lead guitar is an Astro Physicist (PhD), visiting researcher at Imperial College and animal activist. Whatever happened to real musicians with interesting lives?

When the radio stations in the UK found out how long the track was they didn’t want to play it, but a DJ called Kenny Everett played it fourteen times in a row and they credit him to the early success of the record. The high voice was the drummer Roger Taylor. Classic music without a computer in sight! There is a video on YT of Brian May breaking down the track

So envious that you saw them live

I remember hearing this for the first time in the 1970's it blew me away because it was so unusual and broke boundries. My favourite bit is the last line which is sung in a whisper, still makes me get goose bumps!. Queen a brilliant band, loved Freddie, Roger, Brian and Deaky who is from my neck of the woods. Freddies' talent is sorely missed.

I saw Queen perform this live a few times in the 70’s and 80’s. Miraculously the operatic section although done on tape took nothing away from the live performance. I also met Freddie and Brian at Stafford Bingley Hall in 1977 before the concert. Fabulous time of my life and there has never been a band as iconic as Queen since.

I can totally see David Bowie, Lou Reed and Freddie Mercury, in heaven, reminiscing their careers and the fans over a pint or whatever they like to drink.

It's so nice watching someone find this song for the first time. It's iconic to so many people in the UK. There is another video called green day crowd sings Bohemian rhapsody. It gets to me every time I watch it. It shows the passion people have for the song, the band and Freddy himself.

You will now have HOURS, DAYS even of listening to Queen’s music - pure pleasure … and watching Freddie and his mates performing live on stage and seeing for yourself how Freddie could just walk out on stage, grab a tall Mike, and without uttering one word, the audience would be under Freddie’s control and him being the pop meister! What ever Freddie said to do, the audience just did it! To see how much he was loved - watch the Tribute to Freddie concert and see even more fantastic British singing artists! RIP beautiful man Freddie - you are much missed….

I’d say MONTHS, YEARS! There’s a lot of Queen songs out there to listen to and love. Freddie had the most sublime voice, and the other members of the group - Roger Taylor (drums), Brian May (guitar) and John Deacon (bass) - made such wonderful music together. Your reactions take me back to when I first heard this as a 12 year old when my older brothers bought the album “ a night at the opera”. Still amazing today and even more amazing is I met Freddie at a club in Earl’s Court ‘ London’ called “ Harpoon Louis” . He also had a market stall at Kensington market ( now long gone) amazing people in amazing times.

You have probably heard their songs and not realize it their music is played in almost every sporting event for example we will rock you is played at every sporting events as well as we are the champions this band in the 80s was so awesome they made movie soundtracks beginning with the movie Flash Gordon as well as doing songs for Iron Eagle and the Highlander

Whenever they performance this live, the choral intro wasn't done because it was done entirely by Freddie - every harmony perfectly sung and layered in the recording.

JPS thank you so much for the Queen reaction they began there music in the 1970s and ended it in the 1990s when the legend singer Freddie Mercury died of aids on the 24 November 1991. They were very famous in Britain and still are. Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar and his parents were Indian they moved to England when Freddie was 17 and made his music hit the carts all over the world Most of the song were written buy Freddie who was born of the name Farrokh Bulsara. In 2018 they even made a movie called Bohomian Rhapsody it’s amazining. And the band Queen also did live aid for the African poverty to raise money you can react to it on KZread aswell if you like

This was done in the 70's. It was very different for the time- trendsetters. This was the very first music video. Done before MTV generation. If you listen more I will lay money you will not be disappointed!

It's actually 3 songs put together - according to Freddie. My favorite Freddie line was when his manager asked him what was wrong, because Freddie looked upset, and Freddie said 'I'm not going to be a rock star ... I'm going to be a legend.'

I'm guessing you might have heard We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You at sporting events. You probably have heard alot of Queen songs without realising who they are. They are probably one of the best bands ever and Freddy had an amazing voice. You should probably watch Wayne's World, as they kind of sing along to it in an epic way. It was made in the late 70s and a little controversial. If you ever watch the Queen film you will realise how hard it was to get it released.

I remember delivering a 40' container to a wholesalers in Manchester, when this came on my cab radio. I was mesmerised and although there were several increasingly angry men waiting to unload my vehicle, I sat transfixed with the doors locked till the song ended. One of the most memorable days of my life!

Sometimes, just very occasionally, some music makes the world stand still. This was definitely one for me, along with River Deep Mountain High and, of course, Day in the Life.

It's wonderful to see you discover this genuinely for the first time. As other commenters have said, most people in the UK under about 80 can sing along with this word-for-word. Sweetheart, this is 1975 when I was a teen. No autotune, no digital recording. The era of the rock opera style of a few British bands and Queen did it the best here. Bohemian is an unconventional person, usually a wanderer and a rhapsody is a piece of music written without a formal structure that expresses powerful feelings and emotional excitement. I am enjoying watching you discover my era of music.

Queen is one of the best bands of all time. Geniuses. All the music videos are intense

Yes this is one of the most iconic songs ever, you must watch more Queen on you tube,, I suggested you watch this a while ago and I bet there were more too, please watch Freddie Mercury and Monsterrat Caballe singing Barcelona, also watch more of Queen, you will love them, also there is a biopic film out a couple of years ago on Freddie Mercury you may enjoy.

Go to live aid 1985. You will see Queen take control of 79 thousand people. Won't ever forget that concert. Best 21 minutes in music history.

Freddie Mercury had the most amazing voice and range. He was also an incredible singer of opera ! If you can get hold of the entire video of this concert, it is absolutely amazing.

Joel watch the crowd singing that song in Hyde Park. Before a green day concert. It's so moving. Freddie is a great loss to the music industry.

I first heard this in 1975. I was 14. My friend Miles bought it on vinyl. We listened to it in his bedroom with our coats on. There was no heating or double glazing. We affectionately called his bedroom the icebox. Bohemian Rhapsody blew our minds.

I don't think my first reaction, alllll those years ago, was as blown away as you obviously were... you actually felt the music...
