    You can definitely argue that he is schizophrenic but it as clearly telegraphed as the other characters’ insecurities. With the film medium, it is very common for characters to see and talk to things that only they can see as a way to show perspective. So usually if you’re trying to portray schizophrenia you would have more easily distinguishable scenes to convey a character is delusional, outside of mysteries and thrillers. The puppet hallucinations themselves aren’t enough to exactly establish that he’s schizophrenic per say, it would be more accurate to diagnose him with schizoid personality disorder, but either way none of his traits are as clear cut as some of the other characters when you consider that there are plenty of examples in the boys universe where people have visions unique to themselves. I also think it’s a stretch to say most if not all of the kids in the woods have mental illnesses. Assuming you mean the main characters, transgenderism isn’t what I would call a mental illness, and assuming you mean the actual woods supes, many if not all of them were confined for disobeying vaught in some way, not for any previous mental issues they may have had prior to their imprisonment. I do still see how you could interpret Sam that way though and I think it would be interesting if they touch on that more in the second season.

    I think both emma and marie use their powers for self harm. yes emma has to vomit to shrink but because she was rasied by a mom who always shamed her weight and eating, that definitely affects her relationship to her powers and why/how she uses them at times. same with marie. part of using her powers requires her to cut open skin, but because she struggles with seeing herself as a hero and worries she's a monster/the cause of her parents death, it affects her relationship to her powers and why/how she uses them at times.

  • @Nero-gl2fv

    In the final episode Emma shrinks down without vomiting because she is made to feel small so yeah I think it’s gonna play into the self harm aspect because she’s seemingly never explored other ways to use her powers that aren’t physical self injury.

    I can’t speak on Emma but it always confuses me when people say Marie is self harming. Like ya, she’s cutting her palms, but she does it to use her powers. It’s the same as Cate using her powers even though it causes her harm. It’s different from “self harm”

  • @jacomoncal

    @cookiestrong8757

    @@jacomoncal I feel like people are talking about Marie’s self harm in a mental health type of way though. The self harm that happens do to mental distress is different from the “self harm” that Marie does in order to use her powers. Self harm in the mental health sense is bad because it doesn’t address the underlying issue of why the person does it, and it can cause long term damage to the skin. In Marie’s case though she does it to either defend herself or to help other people by practicing using, or actually using her powers. The psychology behind why she cuts her palms is different from what you would see from a self harmer. That’s why I don’t like people saying that it’s “tackling important issues” or “representation of self harm”. Because it’s really not. Again, I haven’t heard of anyone saying that Cate is self harming when she is using her powers. Even though her powers cause her body even more harm than Marie.

    I reckon a lot of the Supe's powers become what they are based on what they really really needed as a kid at one particular point in time- so most of it will be related to some kinda trauma, a way to protect themselves or escape or fight or even just to understand- **SPOILERS!!** like how Jordan has sexually repressed parents with oldschool values so she is basically literally 2 people to represent that she's bisexual (that was a bit on the nose for me, it was like- yeah okay, spell it out even MORE for us why doncha gigglesnort) and maybe A-Train had to run real fast one time cos he grew up in a bad neighbourhood and all the invisible people probably literally wanted to disappear at one point...and then it gets interesting when you add in the DNA bits as well- like does Andre have his metal powers like his dad cos it's passed down genetically or does he have them cos he wanted so bad to like his dad cos he loved him (lol aww, my heart😂)?? And then mental illness comes into as well, like when they can't control them (oh oh- they kinda did that at the end with "Buffy" too!!). I LOVED this show, it wasn't just a dumb cashgrab- it was actually, surprisingly good!! lLol I kept flipflopping between who were the good guys, who were the bad guys so much- unlike with "The Boys" where the lines are more clean cut...I think the underlying theme would be that the PARENTS were the real bad guys in this show, especially if they only did this as a cynical way to exploit their own kids, I mean, what did they THINK would happen??! Of COURSE they're going to get experimented on and manipulated or have it backfire personally by accident some time...but when they're raised in a lab they turn out completely pyscho like Homelander- eeeeek!! Ohmygod ohmygod that was so freaking good!! So he's basically just crazy now, right?? Ohmygod I freaking love these shows!!! And I'm a little winedrunk!! Lol I'm going to watch all the Cate bits all over again (oooh they did her so dirty)!!

    @LeahB31 Completely agree, the series was fantastic up to the very last episode. It kinda felt like they needed to up the stakes as soon as possible to gather hype for The Boys s4, but in doing so made the villains turn so quickly with barely any rhyme or reason. If some college kids are going to genocide the entire human race, many of which are completely innocent toward their treatment of supes, at least give us 2 more episodes to really see them decend into their new twisted ideology.

    I agree with you, 100% because I just didn’t buy the motivation that Sam would just forget what Cate did and be all superhero supremacy, just because he hung out with Rufus’s friends. I understand him wanting to do all those things solo but with Cate? No don’t buy it when he’s been trying to off her every time he sees her

If I remember right, she had pictures of said downed plane saved showing burn damages.

    Ok you kinda made me make sense to some things because I honestly thought the writing went downwards after they blacked out and forgot Sam for a sec. At the beginning, Shetty was so motherly to Marie but we never saw her do that with Cate until the second half of the season (as if the Cate subplot was created much later). The writing made it seem that the first time we saw Andre and Cate sleep together, it was their first time and even Cate was awkward with "should we talk about it?" but no they've been doing it longer than that.

    My theory about dean shetty, this was her plan to get killed and make cate go on a rampage to show the world how dangerous supes are and how big of a problem they are. And i think she did it in a way that cate didnt even realise. Like cate has always seem vindictive about being a product. Or maybe cate os still ready to die and sacrifices hers and dean shetty'a life to end supes? Idk i am curious. I loved this show. Somehow better than the boys itself. (Doesnt mean i dont want more of the boys) and holy fuck the nervousness i felt when cate was about to grab jordan and when homelander showed up. I was genuinely so afraid for the fate of these characters. Ive never felt that before.

    Good overview, I will say brushing over Emma getting a deeper understanding of how her powers work doesn't do her character justice. It's not so much she can shrink without puking, but she can shrink when she sees herself as small. Conversely, it likely means she grows if she feels big. This could lead itself to get growing big if she's confident or self assured, but we've only seen it manifest as her literally feeling fatter because of her eating

    I was honestly expecting some CW tier drama show, but Gen V ended up absolutely blowing my expectations out of the water. It fits perfectly into The Boys universe, and its pretty impressive that they just made up a bunch of new characters and did such a good job with them. Just goes to show that not every superhero product has to be about Batman or Spiderman or Iron Man, but studios like Marvel and DC are too scared to try and come up with new characters so they just always rehash the same handful of characters over and over

    Gen z is a joey to friends. It could be so much better in my opinion although I do enjoy the premise and I do like the connection to the show but many of the students in the school have terrible powers. Major weaknesses. It also has a Melrose place vibe that just I could see more of the students being more like a Martin the Simpsons or urkels. Unlike shows in which the young people really expire that's missing in this show but the low quality lowbrow stuff is alive. Even the opening statement in which I don't want to spoil anything but the opening 15 minutes just starts to show off on a depressing level
