I entered service with the Marines in 1993, so I still remember the old cotton and canvas field jacket and rubber "gumby" rain suits for cold and rainy weather. The field jacket had a nice liner that could be buttoned into it or removed. When the gore-tex gear started to be issued it was great. It replaced the field jacket and gumby suit. Kept you dry. It wasn't as warm by itself compared to the old field jacket, but it was loose enough for a layered system to keep you cozy. The old field jacket was warmer, more comfortable, but it wasn't keeping the water out. Around 2000 I had a set of gore-tex issued that sucked real bad. The rain seeped in around the shoulders and armpits, had to get it replaced. The Marines kept this stuff on until we had switched to digital MARPAT cammies. A new set of gore-tex was made and issued in the same digital pattern. But the design was different and the old, initial liner underneath were no longer present, and other lesser changes. Still good stuff though. In the Marines we always had our rank on that little tab out in front of the jacket. The only time we didn't was when we were working on aircraft. You went to work on aircraft with as little objects as possible for FOD prevention (Foreign Object Debris). FOD could be left to cause damage and safety issues with aircraft.

Awesome insight! Was the cotton and canvas jacket the M65 field jacket? Thank you for your service!

@@froginthewaves8450 Yea, M65 with woodland camo was what we were issued and used until Gore-Tex took over. M65 had this really awesome liner that could be attached. It was great. In the Marines it was even acceptable to use the M65's liner under our regular camouflage blouses. Sometimes we'd have it underneath our maintenance work coveralls. Cold enough but it didn't warrant a full on jacket. Again, the Gore-Tex was better but M65 was awesome still.

The Jacket is a M81 I've got one I use all the time and two stored in vac sealed bags for future use. I've also got the Trousers keeping the set in my pack for Cold or Rainy days when I go Camp hiking, hard to beat the quality for the cost of them.

I used the epaulet to display my rank when I was in, but then I was one of the first soldiers in the Army in Alaska to wear one of these because I bought it with my own money. Those hidden pockets are awesome. I think you might be able to fit a whole MRE in each hidden pocket.

In mountain warfare school, I wore the parka and pants over the silk weight base layer and sweated because the goretex doesn't breathe, so I'm confident with the fleece you could stand some low temps, static.
