Gemma Arterton on depression, improvisation and filming The Escape with Dominic Copoper

Dominic Cooper is interviewed for their movie The Escape directed by Dominic Savage and also starring Dominic Cooper at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival in Canada. The film deals with the heartbreak and intimacy of a couple dealing with depression. She talks about coming up with the story with the director, and how the improvisation on set lead the film during production.
The Escape is written and directed by Dominic Savage and stars Gemma Arterton, Dominic Cooper, Frances Barber and Marthe Keller.
Plot:
A woman sets out to reclaim her life in this stirring, emotionally rich look at what it means to start over. Tara (Arterton), a housewife and mother in suburban London, is living a life that is no longer hers: it belongs to her loving but overworked and self-absorbed husband (Cooper), her young son and daughter and the numbing routine of housework and childcare. In desperate need of a change, Tara one day makes a bold decision. Armed with a one-way ticket to Paris, she leaves everything behind to rediscover herself in a new city - but walking out on your life isn't so simple
The Escape is out in the UK on the 3rd of August.

What a delightfully bright and intelligent young lady.
For someone who hasn't gone through this in real life, she did an AMAZING job of portraying Tara's character. I literally felt like I was walking through her footsteps the whole film, my heart was beating so fast, and I was crying throughout various points in the movie. Amazing.

what a fabulous film. I found it hard to watch most of the time as I related so much to tara’s character. The desire to detach from people, the shame of feeling a desire to pull against and away from societal norms. Brilliant

Interesting movie,poses many questions without any easy answers.It made me feel for all the mums out there that are struggling.Life sometimes isn’t easy,it can be a struggle but you have to make your choices and stand by them.

I feel like it needed more depth to the script. So many additional questions the movie could have answered about the characters motives and reasons for their feelings and pain. And so much more communication that the couple could and should have had.

I suppose it was implied from the beginning of the film. Tara is not enjoying the life of domesticity anymore and her husband is naive and insensitive. Illusioned by the life he brags he brought to them. Tara doesnt feel like an authentic human being anymore, just seems like another object in the house delegated with the task of motherhood. Also she has crippling depression. The movie is on her perspective, it portrays well how she sees her husband negatively.
