You can use information theory to determine if their vocalizations contain meaning even if we can't decode what that meaning is. If some sounds occur more often than others and when you graph the average use of each sound they make if a 45 degree angle appears on the graph, you have detected something that contains meaning. Apply this to your script, to dolphin noises, you name it the principle is the same.

I'm listening to Animal Logic. I'm watching you.
I can't believe you fine folks neglected to mention the other side effect of the gelada's digestion: They are spectacularly flatulent. Constantly blasting the bumhorn. Their existence is an utter cacophony not just of strange cries and wobbles, but of gaseous eruptions, like a roaming volcano of noisome emissions. Magnificent animals.

Bloating from grazing vegetation. Methanogen bacteria breaks down cellulose (indigestible matter) releasing methane in the process = tooooot
@ValentinoB

It makes sense given that the gut microbiota metabolize the vegetation and the gaseous waste products produce the glorious -cacaphony- cacophony** that is seen to a lesser extent -unfortunately?- by their less hairy cousins, us humans. btw, "spectacularly flatulent" is a term that I will be now including in my everyday vernacular, thank you very much. However, I will admit that I am less fond of bumhorn, and more partial to the colloquial, "toot-flute". "Their existence is an utter cacophony not just of strange cries and wobbles, but of gaseous eruptions, like a roaming volcano of noisome emissions." - pure poetry!

Many herbivores are also known to pretty large and can stampede, which is pretty scary. At the same time, seeing their biped shuffle/butt scuttle eases that particular fear.
I remember Sir David Attenborough, talking about these monkeys any chance he got. And I see the appeal. That lip turn thing has always creeped me out, though.

It really is uncanny sometimes how primate faces can make us instantly think of human emotions. Sometimes, even accurately, and sometimes not - to the detriment of the primate and the human both. Like how with us, smiling is a good thing - but clearly for the Gelada, showing the teeth isn't necessarily a happy face! But I agree, those eyebrows seem so expressive, even more so than a dog's eyes. Have to wonder what kind of deep thoughts they might have, up on their cliffs looking over the world.

The geladas are beautiful and brilliant. I hope they stay safe. One thing people can do to help all animals is to buy detergent that comes in a sheet (like a dryer sheet). They also come in cardboard boxes so no plastic in the ocean or in Landfill.

Another wonderful video! Also that dress is phenomenal!
Gelada are pretty just don't make it angry but then again common knowledge to not mess with any animal also bonobos are my favorite ape
It’s fascinating they’re able to digest the hardy, mostly-silica blade grasses without multiple stomachs to ferment like ruminants.
Omg 😂😂😂that "wobble" noise 😂😂😂 its perfect 😂😂😂😂

Mistake at 07:53. Geladas don't live in "herds"! They live in troops.
The male gelada on the right just watching himself pee is hilarious 😂😂😂
I know about a lot of animals cuz a lifetime interest in them but there are very few documentaries on the huge primate family and all its species Would love more primate videos if you can Also loved this video
I think I speak for many of us when I say that Danielle’s sense of style is one (unexpected, but substantial) reason to watch this channel.

6:59 what a contemplative being, observing even its own pee patterns, maximizing an otherwise mundane task.
Here we pronounce it as 'CHelada' so I was confused for a min. They're actually quite shy. I tried to take pictures but every time I pointed my phone at them, they'd turn their backs on me. Felt like a paparazzi running after them but I got some good shots.
I learned about these through an AI talk from the Earth Species Project that was talking about decoding animal languages through AI. Cool to know more about them from Animalogic, my go-to channel to learn about animals!

@@briana.9395 Not quite, they aren't in the family Bovidae, Bovidae (Ox, Antipope) and family Moschidae (Kasturi), also know as Musk Deer (not Deer), Vampire Deer as a common name can be confusing, as it is used for the Asian Kasturi (not Deer), but it can also be used for the Asian Water Deer, Asian Muntjac Deer and Asian Tufted Deer (True Deers) all fang bearing Deer. Sabertooth Kasturi could work as a Common name, it word remove the confusion of useing the name Deer for an animal that not a Deer.
