Geiger Counter - Radioactive Iodine for Thyroid Cancer

Ғылым және технология

I purchased a Geiger Counter on Amazon to measure my radioactivity during a Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Thyroid Cancer. I understand that this Geiger Counter may not be calibrated correctly but the changes in numbers in relation to time and space give a good idea of the changes in radioactivity before and after the Radioactive Iodine Treatment. This video measures my radioactivity after a tracer dose of I-131 used for Whole Body Scan. In addition to seeing the radiation levels increase in my body, another interesting aspect I show in the video is how the numbers dramatically change as I step away from the Geiger Counter. This shows the importance of keeping at least a 6 foot bubble during your "isolation period" following a Radioactive Iodine Dose RAI.

Thank you for sharing this. You're the only person on KZread who has conducted such an experiment. It would be great if someone could perform a similar experiment daily for 10 or 14 days following RAI treatment to observe how the radiation levels decrease over time.

I actually tracked mine for about a month after treatment and now I wish I had filmed and recorded it. Thank you for watching!

How quickly did it go down over the course of the month? When did it become undetectable ?

I remember tracking it but I just don’t remember the specifics and do not want to tell you wrong. I really wish I had kept a log. Thank you for watching! If you have to go through the process it will be ok - I was terrified but everything worked out.

You did counts per minute. Or CPM. You need to do Units micro Sieverts per minute, which is how you measure the biological effects in the amount of the dosage of radiation. Sieverts are used if your dealing with higher levels of radiation, in the core of a nuclear reactor, or a nuclear explosion that happened in Chernobyl.

By default the GMC-300/320 units are calibrated to 150 CPM = 1 uSv/h which is appropriate for their M4011 tube. You can do the division to see how much it was screaming for, which was around 75 uSv/h when it was showing close to 12k CPM.

can you do a video on how to step up the room and bathroom and other things when you were in isolation?

Wow that’s insane. Got me worried lol. I have to go do my Iodine radiation sometime the end of this month. I don’t know what to expect. I was told I have to stay at the hospital for 3-4 days.

Hi Efren! I was scared to death and was isolated for several days when I got my big dose of RAI but it all worked out. If you have to go on the low iodine diet there is a great group for info on Facebook facebook.com/groups/LowIodineDiet/ Thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey Liz, thank you for this video...I bought this machine as well after seeing your video...I am going through iodine radiation treatment after my thyriod cancer. I have young children at home I needed to know when is it really safe to be close to them.

What were your results? How long did it take for the radiation to dissipate? Thanks 😊

I still get blood tests but so far so good for years now!!!! I can’t remember how long it took to dissipate but when I had my big dose it fell significantly in just a few days.

Hey Liz! Thank you for posting this video. I just had 13 Millicuries last Thursday for hyperthyroidism. I tried to get my husband to buy a Geiger counter but he wouldn’t. I wanted to see how hot I was and watch the radiation decrease. Of course I persisted and found RadioactivityCounter in the apps from my iPhone and it measures beta and gamma rays with my iPhone for $4.99. I highly recommend it. Good luck with your treatments!

Hi Barbara! Thank you for watching! I will have to try that app next time I get a scan. I think it is so interesting to watch the levels increase and decrease. I had Graves disease too - Hyperthyroidism is no fun - I hope you are feeling better!

Oh my! Did that scare you at all? Just hobby-wise I'm interested in Geiger counters and if I stick mine right atop an NRC-exempt check source containing uranium glass it won't get past 3,000 counts/~20 uSv/hr. Six inches away it's several hundred counts, a foot a hundred, past that down to background. Basically halving every two or three inches away. But you were a few FEET away and throwing off nearly 3,000? I'm sure they know what they're doing, but you're super tough to go through that. I'd be scared! Can the treatment cause symptoms of radiation exposure? Loss of appetite, stomach issues, gum problems, immunosupression, etc? And lastly are you doing okay? I see this video is 3 years old but you had commented on it as of 3 months ago. I hope the treatment was effective and such things are no longer necessary for you!

It was terrifying - this was not even the real dose. For my real dose to kill the cancer cells I had a much larger dose and had to quarantine (before quarantine was a thing) so I did not expose anyone to my radiation. I did not want to do it but my cancer was aggressive so I went with the lesser of the evils. This was years ago and I feel great now! Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@LetsGoLiz That's insane! I knew radiation therapy and treatment with radio-nuclides existed of course but I had absolutely no idea they would shoot you up with an amount so potent with such persistent radioactivity that you'd have to isolate from others for ~their~ safety! I'm very happy to hear you're doing well. Thank you for replying - have a good day and many years of health! =)
