2021 Geely Okavango Urban Plus Review, walkaround, in-depth tour, and test drive
Never have I thought to give much praise over an MPV, let alone be excited to review one. In my mind, when someone says MPV, the only car I think of is the age-old Toyota Innova (Kijang) which is just way too bland, common, and whose redeeming factor is just its reliability and availability of parts. With the launching of the Geely brand in the Philippines though and its new Geely Okavango, I decided to take it out for a test, and was pleasantly surprised.
Styling-wise, it's a far cry from your national photobomber. With its beautiful exterior shapes, storm grey color to match, and 18" rims, it has the looks deserving of the 2021 model year name. Step into the interior and you'll just be amazed how much of a European car cabin feel you would experience. From nice leather appointments all around, crisp infotainment screen, beautifully designed digital instrument cluster, and 360 degree camera to plush leather seating, you will never be left wanting in terms of a luxury atmosphere.
With a 190 horsepower inline 3 engine assisted by a 48 volt electric motor, I surely did not expect smoothness to be in any way inherent to the Okavango, however it hands down beats even its inline 4 rivals in terms of power, and smoothness of delivery making it is very responsive and smooth cruiser.
The model we're testing out today is the range topping Geely Okavango Urban Plus featuring a panoramic sunroof, fully digital instrument cluster, and adaptive LED headlamps. While its price tag is a bit steep compared to its lower trim models, I personally believe that the Urban Plus is the choice trim to get. After all, despite it costing 1.478M, it's still a fortune away from the range topper trim of the Toyota Innova.

You may call Geely Fairview at 0956-695-6087 for inquiries. I would like to thank Geely Fairview (yes, not Makati despite the sticker on the back) for lending me this car to try for a couple of days. They have been extremely welcoming to car reviewers like me, and this is definitely much appreciated.

Thank you so much Kyle for a great review. Wet clutch DCTs are reliable because gear shifting is controlled by solenoid valves unlike the dry type that is mechanical. The Geely transmissions really complement the engine. I have driven the latest Fortuner, although HP and torque are impressive however the transmission seems not able to channel the power efficiently which seems a bit lazy. I also drove my gf's coolray and right then and there it reminded me of the jaguar XF 2.2 D albeit to a lesser extent in performance but still handling wise and power delivery pretty much brought back memories.

  • @KyleLiongCars

    @KyleLiongCars

Yep and generally DCTs are so much snappier than regular slush boxes hence there is a huge power loss despite the Fortuner having high power figures. Thanks btw and glad you found the video nice :)

Been looking at this car for few months now, and this review made me want it even more. I am looking for an MPV that won't look "Trying Hard" everytime I have to use it all by myself. + I'm also looking for something that will not only accommodate me, my wife and 2 kids but also something that I can use with my Business. Geely Okavango truly is the one and I can't wait to have one.

Kyle Liong. Been watching cars reviews now on You Tube for PERHAPS 18 months now. Hoping to buy a new vehicle, either SUV or MPV. Medium size. During that time, from watching 40 or 50 different posters with car reviews, I've only found half a dozen PERHAPS that do a generally good job in their presentation. Yet some still lean too heavy on playing background music, attempts to constantly interject humor. But for us that want clear, concise facts and details, and cover all points and questions one might have a desire to know...I MUST SAY...I've found the best reviewer now in you! Straight to the point all the way thru, and focused on the vehicle and it's features/ qualities without any distractions. What impresses me most, is your pleasant but still very professional choice of words and making us feel it is us on the driver seat observing all these facts. YOU ARE TRULY SKILLED BEYOND YOUR YEARS AS A REPORTER! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ETHICS! I Will definitely be watching you going forward and also peruse your previous catalog of vehicles that you've posted about. I realy like the Tiggo7 Pro as well as the Geely Okavango Urban Plus. In my opinion the best bang for the buck and relative affordabilith as far as pricing. But now also curious about the soon to come Geely Emgrand that will hit the shores Feb 25th. (I also am open to buying a passenger car too) Hoping to maybe buy something in the next yr or so, we suffered harshly from Tyhoon Odette and lots of money now being spent INSTEAD on repairing our overlooking the Soth China Sea home. So my/our dream of a new vehicle in 2022 got shattered as overnight our priorities FINANCIALLY needed to drastically change. Hope you can very soon review Geely's soon to be...new offering!! Again thank you for a top notch review here!

Thank you for the most candid review I have seen so far. Others I feel tend to play safe with their reviews perhaps not wanting to upset popular car brands. Im glad to have set aside my bias towards my default brand for decades and tried out several brands before making the final choice. If not, I would not have realized what Im missing out on. It will be extremely difficult to go back to the other popular brands unless they are able to match the features and performance I now enjoy with my Okavango at its amazing price point.

First of all, great review. Very professional, fully detailed and straightforward, Caco might finally have a worthy opponent...😉😉. Back to the car, I already have relatives that bought the Oka already and Geely, nevermind its origin, is a good contender to the ever-growing automobile space here in the Philippines. My only gripe with it is its engine choice for all their three models, this, the Azkarra and the Coolray. I'm just really not satisfied with having that 190hp 1.5 liter, 3-banger powering this 1600kg vehicle. Also, it's no match to the one everybody's comparing it to, the Innova, with its obviously bigger 2.8 liter diesel powerplant and rear-wheel drive layout, whatever the performance figure it might have. Its direct competitor SHOULD be the Rush, Xpander, HR-V, Grand Livina if we're comparing it engine-wise. It's like the Innova were to have the Vios's paltry engine. I was also triggered a bit by the Maxxus G50's 1.5L-in a van-sized body. Goodluck with fuel mileage. I think we all get what I mean. Sure, let's give Geely a chance-I particularly like the Coolray's fresh "Swedish" design to even thinking about buying one-but if that's what these chinese players are offering for the price and expecting buyers to patronize their products, sorry to say I ain't buying it. I'm going for the tried and tested, no matter how mediocre the "features" I get. Just my two cents. More power to you Kyle! Consider me a new subscriber.

Wow that’s probably the longest and most detailed comment I’ve ever received. Thanks, and do know that I appreciate these types of comments. Let me share my 2 cents as well regarding your own. I was very much surprised myself that the engine in these cars is only a 3 banger. It does not feel like such, and most certainly isn’t underpowered. Having driven the 2.8L Diesel Innova, I’d have to be held at gunpoint to claim that the Innova has a more usable power band. While the Okavango and Azkarra both deliver 190hp, and 300Nm of torque, and the Innova pumps out 174PS (around 172hp), and 360Nm of torque, both Geelys have a burst of torque low down in the RPM range that is a lot more perceivable than in the Innova despite it having a diesel engine and more peak torque. Perhaps this is in part due to the mild hybrid found in the Geelys. Another important point here is we’ve gone past the age of displacement equaling power. The age old saying that there is no replacement for displacement is just that, an old saying. A 1.5L turbocharged engine pumping out that much power beating its predecessor designs is a testament to how far we’ve come. Sure, there might might be some turbo lag which we petrol heads are not fond of, but at least in this class of vehicles, it doesn’t really matter. Lastly, diesels are efficient, tried and tested, and a favourite of mine for some situations, however we must also recognize that it’s a technology whose days are numbered, hence we should start embracing the inevitable: small, efficient, and powerful turbocharged engines (and electric). Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk and once again, I would like to extend my appreciation for your thoughts and inputs into my videos 👌🏻👌🏻

@@KyleLiongCars I agree with the mild hybrid kick, that's the only saving grace I can see with Geely's implementation here. These new players still have a big hill to climb, IMHO, but if I were to pick one of them it's either Geely or MG. The rest can leave 😜. I'm still skeptical about that G50. I guess only time will tell if these newcomers will be any good. I also apprecate the Ted Talk, healthy conversations like these are very much appreciated. 😊

I've already seen around 20 reviews of Okavango Urban Plus, this one I've hit the Like button. The only one to use a drone to emphasize the Sports mode. Crisp and straightforward in the reviews. Bravely compares with Innova. Great videos and editing. One thing I wanted to see though is the automatic window wiper when it rains. Maybe use a garden water hose instead? Keep it up! a good future in car reviews ahead.

  • @KyleLiongCars

Not necessarily. Hindi parating mas matipid just because smaller displacement. We have to take into consideration rin po na the 2.8L engines sa mga pick up and SUVs are diesel, so in general, lalo na kung long drive, mas matipid pa rin mga diesel. Also, mas mura rin kasi prices ng diesel per liter. Ang down side lang, mas mahal bilhin ang diesel na kotse, so matagal rin mabawi sa fuel yung purchase price ng car

Hello sir, Great video! We are planning to buy one, soon. Do you think you would pick this Geely OKavango Urban Plus over Innova G and the base Fortuner? Thank you and more power!

Yes!! Do contact Geely Fairview for promos hehe! I drive a V model Fortuner and it’s one of my most disliked car of all time haha! As per the conclusion of my Innova G vs Okavango. video, I’d take this over the Innova any day.
