The craziest thing about this video is that I grew up calling my grandmother Mamaw, not knowing why, thinking I had made it up or something odd. Now i know....mind blown.
Dude, you forgot the greatest game ever to grace the cartridge slot! A game that not only pushed the n64 to its limit, but defined the action adventure genre as we know it today.... Quest 64!

Wind actually had the ability to be the most powerful of the four elements! I did a Wind-only playthrough about a year ago and beat the game with ease. It was almost TOO easy.
OK, all jokes aside, a look back at the N64 without even mentioning Zelda is just incomplete.

5:20 As you already corrected yourself, GoldenEye 007 was rated T not M. o:) I remember because that was the argument I used when I turned 13 to finally be allowed to play it. But I could only play under the condition of not playing in front of my younger brothers. Great video!

Very unique retrospective! You were the only person to not make Zelda the climax of the video, but you replaced it with Kazooie! Hilarious! XD
In 2024 this video still relevant, and it remembers me the year I started watching retro videos planning doing my own retro channel, but... I failed miserably... 9 years later my channel never left the plans...
This was a great retrospective. It was really nostalgic since you weren't just talking about the games but how they affected you as a kid and that brings back memories of being 5 years old and playing Mario 64 for the first time.

Thanks, and glad you liked that style! Anyone can babble off a list of classic N64 games, but I really enjoyed making it kind of an autobiographical retrospective, and I'm glad you did, too!
"So I got into another thing that would end up becoming a lifelong passion. Yes, wrestling." "What?"
12 bucks for conkers bad fur day?! Damn bro!
I didn't even know the N64 was a thing until I got it. I absolutely loved my NES, and my copy of Super Mario Bros. 3. Sadly, consoles don't last forever, so my Mom replaced it with an N64 someone was throwing away anyway. The first game I played was Kirby 64, and my first thought was "wow, pretty. Hurry, little fairy! The eyeballs are gonna get you! Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!" I was sold, but I would miss my precious SMB3...........but then Mom found Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Pokémon Stadium, and Quest 64, among others. SM64? The fact that Mario could TALK was mind-blowing. OoT? For a while, I never got far because I was scared of the first boss, then I couldn't figure out how to kill it, then I reached the Water Temple. Stadium? It was one of the things that introduced me to Pokémon, but it was alright at best. Quest 64? I consider it my first true RPG, and I had a blast. Except for when I reached a boss, because I didn't understand the need for level grinding, I just thought I could just rush through, like with Mario. Overall, I still have my N64, which makes me love it even more.

Damn, FINALLY some love for Quest 64. I mean sure, there was no money or equipment in that game, but the battle system was mind-blowing and it had many awesome spells.
I love your retrospective videos, I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you put in your videos. Thank you and keep making videos please.
Starfox&Mario kart!! I still have an N64 hooked up with those two titles
You know, I never actually watched this original episode until now. Considering it's been 10 years, though, I figured why not. And it honestly still holds up pretty well. Yeah, you've definitely improved a lot with presentation over the years, but the passion remained the same, and I really like how you specifically highlighted the games you grew up on rather than just what was the most popular. When I got my Nintendo 64, albeit a while after the GameCube and Wii, it became a treasure trove of retro goodies for me, especially in the case of Super Mario 64 and the Mario Party games. It's definitely not my favorite Nintendo console, but I have a strong fondness for it, no doubt.
Thank you for taking me back to my childhood.
This is my favorite Geek Critique video, I've watched it over and over.
Dude you hit the nostalgia feeling deep down more than anybody else right now, especially with the mario 64 music at the end. This video brings those feeling of my childhood back.
Nice video man!! For me the wave race was the best. I never have seen water and waves like in that game. Even now a days I still playing this master piece.
Snowboard Kids, Super Mario 64, Golden Eye, Crusin' USA, Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart was all we played. The good ol' days of couch gaming.
This was a really good look back at the system. It was better than just a system breakdown and game reviews. You did a good job of capturing the original feeling of first playing those games.
Why has it taken so long for me to find this channel?! I've only been through 3 videos now, and I love your material!
I got nostalgia chills at the end. Kinda like a finished a book or something. Weird. I felt like crying, how beautiful n64 was and still is.
I remember being a pre-pubescent fanart machine in this era. I was always scrawling pictures of my favorite game characters, and concepts for things like custom pod racers for Star Wars Episode 1 Racing. I recently found an old folder I had decorated, and I even drew the "GET N OR GET OUT" slogan on the cover. Oh, youth!
Damn, after watching a few of your reviews im sold. These are some sweet ass reviews, great structure and detail, while still getting your own opinion across. Subbed.

This was excellently done! Thanks man!
My goodness, this video brought me such joy.

Wow!!! That guy in the N64 reveal at the beginning of the video looks like a younger / thinner version of Reggie Fils Aime, especially at the end when he says, "right on, right on", lol 😂
I got a N64 for Christmas from my uncle who used to always get us the best Christmas presents. We got home and my dad realized the RCA cables wouldn't connect to our coaxial only television. We got a special adapter for it a week later. The week leading up to getting the adapter was the worse hell I've ever been through.
wow - all these geeky retro vids are making me realise that i have lived a very similar childhood to others out there...at times you feel that all of these things are unique to your childhood but now I can see there were thousands of us kids hiding in our bedrooms and our minds playing games...nice to meet you The Geek Critique. Wow, awesome video :D
Great vid!!!
Imagine that we finally get an Ocarina of Time retrospective from this dude, but as soon as the video actually starts, it's just the dude that shouts "BANJO-KAZOOIE" and the video ends up having _no_ Zelda in it
people: Zelda time Him: But what about Nascar?
This is almost my same exact experience but my story takes place from 2004-2005. I would go to my baby sitters house after kindergarten and play the Star Fox non stop each and every single day until my parents picked me up. Gaming was so new to me and my imagination made he games better as I would think up a new story as I was playing
I was 13 when the N64 came out. The early games that defined the system for me were Super Mario 64, Wave Race, Shadows of the Empire, and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.
Seeing an alarming lack of Kirby on your channel dude. Love your content.
Paper Mario is another of my favorite N64 games. One of the only turn based RPGs on the system.
All the System needed was a more conventional Controller, Still a phenomenal piece of Technology either way.
A very loving and passionate look into one of the worlds greatest consoles. It's a good little video bud! Gotta agree with ya, it honestly feels like this was the opus generation of gaming. The era that followed with the PS2 and Gamecube did bring forth it's gems and was what brought gaming in to being a more "household" thing, but it was this generation in which gaming was defined. It's from the N64 that many of the games and genres that we find nowadays were defined. Truly it was Nintendo's Magnum opus.... And given how great and revolutionary the SNES and the fact that it saved the gaming industry, that was no small feat!
great video. you should do more console retrospectives
Yeah N64 was my first console that I owned. Perfect Dark was the first game that I picked up. Played a lot of Diddy Kong Racing , Banjo Kazooie, Rouge Squadron, and Golden Eye. Funny didn't got Orcinia of Time although I finally got to play it on GC when I picked up the promo Master Quest.
throw back in 90's , thanks i'll subscribe :D
My friends will never understand my love for old games...
Aw, we called our grandmother from New Mexico "mammaw" too.
I still can't understand why Nintendo sold Rare to microsoft. I was a playstation kid but i was always jealous of the likes of goldeneye, perfect dark, conker on the n64, so I bought a gamecube shortly after launch in anticipation of all the great Rareware games on 'next-gen' console. Sadly a few months later nintendo sold Rare, and I was crushed! although timesplitters 2 was a nice release by some of the original goldeneye programmers.

Hmm I see, thanks for the input, I read that Nintendo owned 49 or 51% of the company though. You're saying there was a contract that rendered that ownership useless unless they won some bid? That's a shame.I guess I should have looked into it more, I just wasn't surprised because they definitely flipped off square regarding the CD thing, "you need us more than we need you", (read somewhere that Nintendo president said that to Squaresoft back then) so I figured the same logic applied here.

I really enjoyed playing the Nintendo 64. It was the first console I recall playing. My brother had me play on the Sega Genesis but I cannot recall that one. My favorite games on 64 were Command & Conquer Turok 2 Seeds of Evil Doom 64 Duke Nukem 64 Turok Rage Wars And Goldeneye 007 I played those games so much it was ridiculous. But my favorite will always be Command & Conquer. It will always have a special place in my heart. I always wanted a Brotherhood of Nod tattoo as a kid. Haha.
Aw man seeing starfox 64 now just hurts me :( rip rick may
The Geek Critique from what I can tell, we’re both the same age (1988?). Anyways, while my friends all had the Genesis, my dad refused to get us video games until my mom wore him down and we got the N64 for Christmas 1996... I grew up with Mario 64, goldeneye, banjo kazooie and tooie, Mario kart 64, and all the other classics... this really hit my nostalgia in the feels... And I’m still with you. I believe in Banjo Threeie... maybe one day Microsoft will pull its head out of its ass and make it. Maybe even farm it off to Playtonic if we’re _really_ lucky...
sanfransico rush was my fav on the n64 by far it was so damn fun and the other rush is fun to trying to stunt a car to crazy spots to get coins and mt dew cans. the game has you explore every inch of the track, it is so hard to figure out how to get your car to all the spots stuff is hidden please cover rush

My experiences with the N64 as a kid included games such as Pokemon Stadium, Gauntlet, Rampage, and most of all Paper Mario.

I agree with so much you said here, except I was about 4 years younger than you, but I followed this exact same video game path, Mario 64, Pilotwings, (had crusin’ USA around here too) Mario Kart, Star Fox, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie (that was huge for me) then it was Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Tooie, Super Smash Bros., Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, and finally Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Funnily enough, it took til I was an adult to fully beat Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask
I loved how you F-ed with everyone on the Zelda note
In retrospective my parents were very good to me in the sense this stuff was expensive and they didn't have much to spare. i appreciated the wait between games and got to enjoy them more. cheap second hand games were also more exciting even if they were crap.
You’re from Tennessee too, I’m already a fan and now I like you even more. I don’t know why we feel connected with people from our state.

The 1st Jak and Daxter was heavily inspired by Mario 64, and I think it's a good example of how games evolve, because it's basically Mario 64 but with an extra 5 years of polish. Proper 3D controls, and, more importantly a seamless open world. No glorified level select screen, and you don't have to reload a level to do different objectives.
N64 is Nintendo’s best argument for quality over quantity. I got one or two games a year as a kid and they were always more than enough to keep me happy.
