I am glad to see that you view this as the best Mario Kart thus far; I have been iffy about if it is worth getting as a guy who played every other main Mario Kart. I never actually got a Wii U because of constant discouragement from my big sister; but I vow to get a Switch after I complete this semester of college so I can get my hands on Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (and Breath of the Wild [and Splatoon 2 {and Super Mario Odyssey}]) as well as other titles later down the road. The future of gaming has never looked so good; Thanks for reminding me that.

I agree with you on the roster front, but I do like the Koopalings. However the metal characters and babies are the ones I find massively redundant.

I guess I'd compare it thusly: My favorite Nintendo franchise is Donkey Kong Country. Suppose the next Mario Kart features DK, Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, Funky, Tiny, Chunky, Lanky, and (because why not?) Ted the Boatbuilder from off of Conker's Pocket Tales. I personally would love that. But at the same time, I'd have to admit that there's a real problem with pulling so many similar characters like that. Unless you're as fanatical about DKC as I am, that roster is just going to feel redundant. "Oh good, I unlocked ANOTHER freaking Kong."Still, you're right that compared to the Metals and babies, the Koopalings look like the most diverse and interesting set of characters in gaming history.

MichaelLeroi Same it’s my favorite in the series next to 64.
Now that the Nintendo Switch is going to have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, are you going to review it when it comes out towards the end of April?
Completely agree. The game was lacking in just a few points (that are aaalmost completely remedied at this point) or didn't have some basic option features, but other than that I absolutely adore this game. It's balanced, it's flashy, it's polished, it's fun; it's what Mario Kart has always been striving to evolve to. It's my favorite in the series to date, and I would say it's easily the "best" in the series.
Someone is going to kill me for this, but I'm saying it: Mario Kart 8's Rainbow Road is, in my opinion, the best Mario Kart track ever created. The futuristic yet realistic space theme just WORKS for me.

You are spot on with the lack of options. I would love to customize races in Mario Kart. A one-on-one race with no items. A 12 man race with only bullet bills. There are so many crazy things you could do in Mario Kart and they don't give you the freedom to do that. I hope the next one has more options.

I'd say 8 is the best Mario Kart yet, and my second favorite behind Double Dash. 8 is SO full of charm with its unique levels, and fun as hell either online or with friends.
I think 1 lap for N64 Rainbow Road is good, but the actual track layout has been shortened, I think. Not only are we racing less laps, but racing less within a single lap...once again, I think. If the track layout were extended slightly, I think it would've had a good length. I like having all 7 Koopalings, but really, they could've stayed while retaining previous characters that have been cut. And there are definitely unnecessary characters. Metal Mario could just be an alternative skin for Mario, reducing clutter on the screen, and Pink Gold Peach could just be cut, or saved for DLC when Nintendo has run out of new characters. And yeah, extra customization like lap choice, item choice, etc. would be great! I wish the game were more supported with DLC and updates that addresses concerns like that.
@kylecampbell565

K-leb I feel a better compromise to rainbow road would be to make it TWO laps like that Wario stage in Double Dasj
Kind of unreal that this game’s foundation is so solid it’s been the current Mario Kart for almost 10 years with minimal complaints.
The people upset about your Double Dash review are just holding on too much to nostalgia lol But yeah MK8 definitely is the pinnacle of the series. Well...I should be clearer. MK8 Deluxe is the perfect Mario Kart. All the DLC and the new battle mode makes it perfect along with the ability to use 2 items now.

Hah, making this review was so funny. I'd spend hours and hours editing, get so sick of it... and then lay down to go to bed and play a few rounds of Mario Kart 8 before going to sleep. That's how good the game is.
Why is it that every time I hear someone talk about the roster, they always say that the Koopalings are the problem? I just don't get it; if the babies and re-skin characters were not there, there would be room for all the other characters people want. Seriously. It makes NO sense.
@kevandre

I'm sure that the reskin characters took far less time to make than any other character on the roster. Taking them out would probably just result in one less filled slot, it's like when people bitch about clones in Smash Bros without understanding why they exist

Well, to be fair, to a lot of the Switch players, the whole game is brand new. But yeah, not much has changed! At least there are 50% more courses, so it doesn't come up as an option quite as frequently! I remember one time, and I don't know if I referenced it in this video, but I played Mount Wario in something like 6 out of 10 games online. It was awful, and I still resent the stage to this day, haha.
"No one game can save a system." Halo would like to have a word.
I’d be interested in a revisit to the game given your modern writing and now that this game has over double the courses it had at launch
That use of Avatar the Last Airbender music in the beginning was so hype, outstanding!
Such an orgasmic soundtrack. Whatever corners they cut elsewhere in the game, as long as it went towards sound design, it was worth it.
All the koopalings was a great addition they are some of the best character I'm Mario games
My problem with Mario Kart 8 is the same problem a lot of people have with the game: there are too many items that don't make enough of a difference on the match. In Mario Kart 8, you're either fighting for the lead, or you're hopelessly behind. Items can't net you new places as much as they used to. When you're in the top few spaces, you don't get much of anything. If you're between 4th and 8th place, you get the best items in the game...but they still don't last long enough or make enough of an impact to change the match. 8th-12th place saddle you with a bunch of items that are quite powerful, but you're so far behind that they won't matter....they'll either wear off or be used up and you'll have climbed into the tier where nothing much happens. I still think 7 is better.
Looking forwards to your commentary about the DLC, man~~
Loved the use of the Avatar theme at the beginning.
Loving the Avatar music at the beginning there lol
Glad to see some one love 7 and 8 the most for once
How to make my favorite mario kart: Put fawful in it
Nice legend of korra music at the start
That intro hits different after how the Wii U performed :v At least 8 Deluxe has a proper Battle Mode That outro hits even worse after all them ports
I for one loved double dash. I loved the gamecube as well. Even tho i never had one, my brothers did
Wario and Luigi have been my mains ever since Mario Kart 64.
Really enjoy the videos. Agree to disagree on the Koopalings. Can't have one without all of them. And they're all fantastic. The Babies? Agree.
I hope Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can fix the very few problems in this gem of a game. More characters, stages, and a fixed Battle Mode are are colossal steps in the right direction. Now all we need are those character and item switches and Old Diddy back behind the wheel.
9:21 You, my friend, are unreal.
So in other words they made it easier for the casual gamer. That's why I'll always love double dash. The fuckery while racing friends made it so fun. I've never had closer and more exciting races with friends than with double dash.
6:24 WOW! I am SO not used to seeing only 8 cups instead of 12. I got 8 Deluxe, but one of my friends had the original and all the DLC too. So I rarely ever saw the original release’s selection screen!
Fawful... FAWFUL?! We'll show them, see? Rookie!
And the good news is: if you skipped over the Wii U like I did, you get a 2nd chance with the Switch version which addresses a bunch of the gripes you mentioned. Though there's still no Diddy Kong on the roster >:(
I did enjoy this game over a friend's house but I still don't think its enough to sway me on buying a Wii U. Nothing about this game or the actual system has made me care about it at all.......until Smash Brothers comes out anyway. I really enjoyed this video and the retrospective itself so well done!

Thank you for your perspective. I have new appreciation for Mario Kart 8. And I appreciate your thoughts on the Wii U. Too many people tear it down just because it had relatively poor sales. It probably flopped harder than the GameCube. But I think its library of games is even better than the GameCube.
@willr81680

I'm still trying to play through my Wii U game library. "Nintendo Land" feels like a game that I'd have to play for 100+ hours to only complete about 90% of the content. I put 118 hours into "The Wind Waker HD" (hardly used the Swift Sail; wanted to get perfectly centered photos of all the figurines) after missing out on the GameCube version. I've liked "Tropical Freeze" so far (18 hours and only in world 2?). Then, I haven't gotten too far into 3D World or Smash. About 10 more games haven't been touched yet.
was hoping you had done an updated version for MK8 deluxe to touch on the new features!!
thank goodness dry bones and bowser Jr are getting added, though although i didn't see diddy...
What about having Goombas included as characters? I think just simply watching them would be hilarious and great. There's also the fact that Amiibo or DLC can easily add more characters. Also, I found that the Retro Rainbow Road was just way too edited, and I didn't recognize it. If it weren't for the reminder on the loading screen, I would've guessed it was a new track. And WHERE did that space train come from?
@GeekCritique
10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I didn't mention that, but I agree. Maybe it's because Rainbow Road 64 holds so much nostalgia for me, but all those changes did kind of... I won't say ruin, but they CHANGED the atmosphere.
@soxbrooker
10 жыл бұрын
Yer Amiibo is sure to bring more characters to the game. I'll be very happy with that :)
Now let's see your retrospective on MK8 DX since now we have way more DLC tracks available!
I've watched about seven or eight of your videos, and I've appreciated all of them. It's been a while since I played Kart 8, but I had kind of mixed feelings when comparing it to the rest of the series. I know that I've owned Super, 64, and Wii. I don't think I've played any of "Double Dash" or the portable versions. Graphics: I wish MKWii had looked like this game! The art style reminds me of 7, but I'm sure 7 wasn't in HD. Music: I can't really hear MKWii's soundtrack in my mind. Kart 8 probably has the best remixes of the older music, and the newer songs might be the best in the series. Beyond that, I think it gets subjective? Characters: I remember playing often as Funky Kong in MKWii; now he's not in Kart 8? Also, when they did the Zelda and Animal Crossing DLC, I felt like that changed it from a true "Mario Kart" game to "anybody on Nintendo's roster can drive a go-kart." That seems like a slippery slope where they could turn it into a bloated Smash Bros. roster with third party characters. Vehicles: Starting from MKWii, I think I liked the bikes more than the karts. They seemed less bulky and like it was easier to land tricks. In Kart 8, I've probably driven more in the karts, since there didn't' feel like a huge difference between them and the bikes. Also, the "customization" overwhelms me in Kart 8. Why do you keep unlocking wheels that look like reskins of existing wheels? Then they're not grouped together in a similar place, or I can't see a stat boost from using the different colors (I may be wrong on that). The gliders seem to be 90% cosmetic, because only a few of them (one matching your character?) appear to change your stats. There were maybe two to four extra vehicles in MKWii that I thought were hard to differentiate, but I liked how your selections were based on the weight of your character, and they kind of did the customization for you. Controls/Handling: It's hard to say, since I'm out of practice with Kart 8. I think I LOVED how they took away the automatic "traction control" and forced you to manually drift. I always tried to use the manual drift in MKWii, and I wonder if that held me back in online races (assuming other people turned on automatic traction). When I did time trials in manual mode and then with the automatic handling, it looked like the automatic handling was always better (consistent lap times), which made it feel cheap or like a cheat code for less skilled players. Tracks: I'd have to say that the design AND the selection felt disappointing in Kart 8. I started off at the slower speeds, so many of the tracks just looked like five lane highways with almost no obstacles to dodge or any "choke points." Why do some of these new tracks split up sometimes? If neither path is faster, and if you can't hit someone on a different path with your items, then it's tough to see the point. Didn't the Wii game have more shortcuts or areas where you'd risk slowing down unless you had a mushroom? It's hard to remember the selection in 8 to comment on them, but I have more fond memories of the Wii tracks. There were the occasional bland tracks (Luigi Circuit and the Yoshi one?). Also, in Kart 8, I felt like they were trying to copy track features from Wii instead of inventing something new. Is it me, or does the airport feel like a new Coconut Mall? Also, one track (new Rainbow Road?) had the alternating conveyor belts like Toad's Factory. AI/Difficulty: In Kart 8, I started out "grinding" in 50cc. Unfortunately, it does feel more like a grind in this game, because the DLC makes it TWELVE Grand Prixs that you have to win, at four or five different speeds (with the addition of 200cc?)??!!! Anyway, at 50cc, it almost got boring how I'd spend maybe one lap moving up to first place. Then, for the rest of the Grand Prix, you would almost think I was the only person on the track doing a time trial. I think MKWii was similar at those difficulty levels, but I'd get hit by two or three blue shells on the final lap when nobody else had a realistic chance to catch me. I don't remember if it was in my race, or something I saw online, but there was also a Kart 8 example where a 3rd place CPU took out the CPU who was leading the race, so that the human driver could win. It just seems like Kart 8 is afraid to challenge you? Gimmicks: Why has the series been teaching us that you'll slow down if you go off-road or hit something, and then, in anti-gravity mode, all of that logic is reversed? You'll go SLOWER by not hitting anything. It's crazy to have races/tracks with two alternating sets of rules. I even wondered if they added obstacles to the anti-grav sections because you might be racing in the lead with nobody to give you a boost. Miscellaneous: I know you mentioned that they possibly ran out of development time, but WHY is there NO celebration cutscene when you win a Grand Prix? The series has been showing that podium on the console games since the Super NES days. Basically, there are tweaks I would make to both games (Wii and 8), but probably more of them to 8? You or someone else was mentioning a way to edit items. I've seen that menu in Mario Kart Wii's "Versus" mode. There are about three options, and one lets you turn off anything besides shells and bananas. In Kart 8, I feel like the horn is kind of "useless." I usually get it when nobody else has a blue shell, and then I only have a banana or a green shell when someone else does get the blue nuisance. I'd get rid of the "traction control" in Wii to make everyone learn how to drift and boost. Now I feel like playing Mario Kart 8 again! I'm kind of upset that it's not possible to play the Wii game online anymore.
Really hoping TGC makes a new video looking at MK8 DLC and MK8DX to round out this series :D
Even with the release of MK8D along with the additions & fixes it brought... this is still the better version, in my opinion. It focused a lot more on balancing the racing, while MK8D flounders about with having double items ON TOP OF 12 racers per race. If things got chaotic at times in the original MK8, the Switch version gets bad enough to a point where it becomes unfun.
I love having the Koopalings due to nostalgia from SMW as a 4 year old. The baby characters the different color/metal peaches is just dumb. The latter are what SSBU would term "echo fighters". And there could have been one baby character with different skins.

My only complaint is the super horn, overall one of the best
The best thing about double dash is bob bom blast with 3 or 4 players
Well there goes my shot at ever playing this game. I used the hell out of Dry Bones in MK Wii.
When I was a kid playing MK64, I thought that speed was tops and so I played Toad a lot. As I moved forward though I really noticed the value of the heavier characters and by the time MKWii came out I was basically exclusively playing the heavies. Dry Bowser and Funky Kong were my jams, man. In the Offroader kart or in Wario's Bike. Usually the kart. AND I used the Wii wheel. And I wasn't bad at the game... Like at all? It's a little weird to think about. But I use the gamepad for MK8 and it's glorious

I thought Toad and Koopa Troopa had low top speed, though. Maybe you mean the small characters can accelerate faster?
funny thing is the delux version is better in every way, they took a hint from double dash with double item slots and added a bunch of new characters, even reintroducing several who SHOULD have been in (sadly no diddy) also added two items in the ghost and feather I think new karts too and most dlc carts are unlockables as they should be, they may have done rebalancing too cuz items don’t seem anywhere as invasive compared to what I rememberedbefore
It's weird how he didn't mention 200cc....... But this analysis is great!
That avatar last Airbender intro though
You know what ASTOUNDS ME? Mario Kart 8 sold INCREDIBLY WELL! So well, it's unbelievable! It's a game that sells even on Nintendos worst selling console since the virtual boy. I see Mario kart not as a big system seller but a system must have. That's why Mario kart always does amazing but the consoles they are on don't always fair the same
Man, that intro.
Fixed most of the character issue in Mario kart 8 deluxe
I'm totally like you. Play battle mode once or twice, never thought of again.
Maybe the koopalings could've been alternate 'colours' of Bowser Jr.
How do you feel about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now? As I was watching this video, I noticed lots of points where I was thinking "That's been addressed now." Like the character selection and the custom items.
They need to make about 50 completely new tracks, and add the cast of Golden sun as players. And fix every other issue. Other than that, I still love Mario Kart!
O yeah, I forgot about the WiiU.
Mount Wario is a masterpiece!
You know, I hope that Mario Kart 8 will get more DLC. This way they could add more tracks, more characters and maybe even more kart parts to the mix. Yes, it already has DLC confirmed, there is some promo thingamajig going on between Mercedes and Nintendo, so there will be a Mercedes chassis available as free DLC, which means that further DLC is certainly possible. Also, I wouldn't mind paying a couple of bucks for a new cup or a character pack.

I think GameCube was the best console hardware Nintendo made (given the time it was released in of course) Nintendo managed to make a console very close to the Xbox at a much cheaper price. As for the Wii U, it is more powerful in some ways (more RAM, better GPU) and weaker in others (CPU) Even if Mario Kart 8 was just more of the same, I think a lot of players would still be happy with that. I really hope Nintendo puts out DLC for Mario Kart 8 (I want to see more retro courses!). I found it annoying how Nintendo shoveled out Mario Party games on previous systems when they could have put out a second Mario Kart game.

Wait, wait, wait! is that in 2:50 City Escape (Sonic adventure 2) Nintendized?! What's the music in the 3:26?

1) No, but you're not far off! Both games took inspiration form the iconic downhill slopes of San Francisco, which is why they look so similar. 2) That song is Electrodome's course theme in MK8: Mario Kart 8 Music - Electrodrome

Best Mario Kart to DATE!... Unless we count Double Dash... Which normal people do...
no update for dlc, 200cc, battle mode and deluxe?
I personally didn't like Lakkitu saving you instantly. Falling off means you made a mistake, and his earlier slowness to put you back on the track was meant as a penalty for you screwing up. this game ignored mistakes and makes it harder for the other players, because even if you mess up enough where normally you deserve to lose, it won't matter; if you're in first, you'll stay there unless you get hit with an item and the next driver is right behind you/they mushroom speed boost past you.
Tekken 3D s Tekken 6, except without the 6 part. I mean you got all 40 characters... but that's it. Not even joking.
