This is my design of a working geared differential, similar to Eaton's Truetrac. It uses two connected sets of helical sun & planet gears to allow differential motion. It uses the separation forces between the gears to generate friction in the assembly to smoothly lock the axles together and deliver power to both.
Should I start selling these as a fun desk gadget and STEM learning toy?
