Hey James, I didn't know you could buy a bladder wash hose - I made my own about 2 years ago from an old inflator hose and some garden irrigation fittings, cost me about $3 for parts and works a treat. I'm also of the opinion that you should understand how your gear works and thus buying an old BCD and 2nd stage regulator on ebay or gumtree and stripping it down is a good idea. You soon learn how fragile plastic threads are, as well as how easy it is to replace o rings, as well as how important it is to clean your gear properly.

Great tips! I'd add a toothbrush for the soap cleaning phase...I find that this helps dislodge some persistent sand that likes to hide in the deflator! Also If people can't find steramine, Simple Green works well too and the EPA considers it an eco-friendly cleaner.

I once bought a wing and it rattled. Once I took the OPV off I shook out large salt crystals. Half the size of a golf ball. Gotta clean that out folks. I believe steramine needs to sit a bit to work so you may want to just let it lie there for a couple of minutes. I never service LPIs. I throw them out. Replacements are cheaper than repairs if you’re not doing it yourself.

I don’t see divers using double wings with their backplate/harness rigs. Isn’t a double bladder consistent with having redundancy in all of the diver’s systems?

  • @OrenNoah

Why not simply fill the wing with tap water through the OPV port, after having removed the OPV? I leave my OPVs off of my wings for storage, so that they eventually dry out inside.

I think washing with soap is a waste of time. I just soak mine over night. I do drain out the water and run fresh water though it. The steramine I might try, since it is fairly cheap, but it does seem like overkill. Wings have lifetime warrenties. I doubt they would do that if they were going to fail.

I'm not sterilizing the wing because fungus or bacteria will cause the wing to fail in it's utility as a BCD. I'm sterilizing it to kill any festering nastiness in that dark, warm, anaerobic bladder.

The bladder will fail if salty water is left on it or inside; if forms crystals and those will damage bladder eventually by mechanical action. Same applies to rebreather counterloungs if those are not rinsed from outside (assuming sane diver would rinse and sanitize inside).

Ok real talk....are you doing this after every dive? I’m shore diving 2-3 times a week, and adding a 5-10 minute BC rinse to the program really adds up. What do you think of fully cleaning the bladder every dive, vs rinse tank and dry off between dives, and a full clean once a month?
