    This is what has happened to my less than year old Magic Chef microwave. Same symptoms; heated up fine earlier, now no longer heats. Power is fine, and it sounds like it is working, but is not. So a magnetron and diode must be replaced on my as well, so I'm glad I saw this. Thank you.

    @@Integrity.is.everything No, I bought a Panasonic microwave that was refurbished from Walmart several years ago. It works well without any issues. This particular microwave was recommended by Consumer Reports. I think the Panasonic was rated lower. Do not follow any recommendations from Consumer Reports. I believe their testing statistics is faulty.

    E Armstrong I strongly suggest ever installing or replace a microwave that is over your cooking area. Why? The exhaust fan does not have enough velocity to extract steam and cooking odors, and steam kills sensitive electronics (motherboards, etc.). If you were to replace your microwave, I definetly install one flush with your cabinets. Most have trimplates to help exhaust air when in operation. This is my opnion, along with certain factual information, and is meant to be helpful. I definetly recommend a professional diagnosis before repair and/or replacement. I used to use my microwave frequently, now I do not, only to reheat.

    This video helped me learn how access the internals of a similar GE Microwave unit that would not heat food. I was able to diagnose that a door switch had failed and after replacing the switch the unit worked perfectly. I would add that before the unit failed it developed a characteristic whereby the air handler would come on whenever the unit door was opened. After replacing the failed "primary" door switch that issue was cleared up as well.

    ***** I think I have the exact same issue. Air comes on every time I open the door, but microwave is not heating. Sometimes it turns on, sometimes it doesn't. I don't see the "door switch" mentioned above in this video? Would be thrilled if I could purchase a part instead of replacing the microwave.

    I have this same microwave as in main video and it has stopped heating. All functions work, and it heated intermittently for the past week (sometimes worked for awhile and quit but sounded the same throughout). Is it more likely the magnetron in this case? I want to order a part but don't want to pull it down and back up twice so knowing I am ordering proper part would help.

  • @washcloud

    @washcloud

    Жыл бұрын

    below the mag and to the right corner, linked to the chassis and the capacitor -> take caution in touching that 'cause it probably holds some thousands volts even when not connected to the mains (needs to be discharged before getting hands on it).

    I replaced the magnetron and diode, but the problem remains, all the fuses were checked good, the only major component left to be replaced is the capacitor what is your thoughts.

  • @Appliancevideo

    @Appliancevideo

    10 жыл бұрын

    Chung Yes, the capacitor is the only other component that could cause this issue. Remember the capacitor will hold a charge with the power off. Be very careful not to touch the terminals without insulated pliers. With the power off you can discharge the capacitor with an insulated screw driver by shorting it across the terminals. Buy a new microwave. everytime. Unless of course you like to learn about new things are are not working 7 days a week. To each his own. My magnetron would set me back $200 bucks not counting shipping, handling. Plus, add Time to learn and find the time to actually do it. I also factor in my labor cost. I do not consider it $0. I am at leats $150/hr of labor alone. $200/hr if hired by my wife. If just the diode though, you may breakeven on cost. This is based on a GR XL1800 which was an expensive one in 2006.

    So with the cost of the parts(Magnetron) and labor to replace it, you're just better off replacing the entire oven.

    Check the reviews on the replacement units in your price range before making that decision. You are likely to find complaints of failing parts in MUCH less time than your old unit manufactured in the early 2000's. Also, several replacement parts companies have diagnostic help available if needed.

    Magnetrons per google search in 2019 is between $50-$75. Labor tends to be around $100-$125 for first hour+probably require 2 visits since the tech won't have the part. You are looking at waiting around a few days to a week and about $200+ for everything. And you still have a used microwave. On the other hand a new one will cost twice as much, but get installed sometimes at no additional cost or you can do yourself, and has a 1+ year warranty.

    It does not make any sense!!!!!!! Bad if it reads, bad if it does not read. What is the purpose of the voltage test? then the diode is $87Dls and the magnetrone is $230!!!!!! Almost the price of a brand new one.

    HOOKS STICKING OUT THE DOOR IS A DUMB IDEA! I assume the designer had a warped sense of humor and enjoyed thinking of how many people, removing scalding liquid from the oven, will be splattered when the vessel catches on the hooks.
