    My oven had the classic bad igniter symptoms as described so I thought I'd give this repair a shot, even though I'm not all that handy. My oven was a little different, a bit harder only because the igniter was placed so that it was hard to get the screws out & back in easily. I did have to use the ceramic nuts to connect the wires below, but it is all working great now, and I didn't blow up. THANK YOU.

    You might add that the heating element is ceramic and there should be caution not to touch them as the oils in your fingers will degrade the life of the burner element. They can also break/crack easily.

    I just changed mine. The new one tested at 160 ohms, the old one at about 190... but the old one looked charred and took almost 10 minutes to light. In 8 minutes with the old one, the oven only got to 103deg.. the new one got there in 2 minutes, that's including the time it took to ignite. So don't depend only on the ohms.

    I have watched your video numerous times and followed through on the testing. I have replaced the igniter and then tested for continuity on the safety valve, which I did have positive continuity. Once everything was back together, I had to reset the safety plunger on the gas regulator. I am able to get the gas in the oven to ignite, but it is a very low blue flame and doesn't change with increasing the dial rotation. Why will this not fire up? Is this a thermostat issue or still a defective Safety Valve?

  • @repairclinic

    @repairclinic

    10 жыл бұрын

    If the other burners are working ok you most likely have a plugged orifice in the oven burner or the safety valve is not opening all the way. The thermostat does not regulate the amount of gas coming out of the burner. If the regulator was bad it would affect all the burners. I would check the orifice on the oven burner safety valve to make sure it is clean then if it is adjustable try turning it counterclockwise to see if the flame will increase. If not the safety valve will most likely be the problem. Also make sure all the shut off valves are fully open, some regulators have a valve on the supply line to the oven.

    I used your video to replace the igniter on my GE oven. It was very easy to do but when I turned on the oven the door blew open. Now every time I turn on the oven after about 10 seconds there is a big flash of flames in the oven. Should I just scrap this oven or is there an easy fix?

  • @repairclinic

    @repairclinic

    9 жыл бұрын

    Larry Lott Either the igniter is not close enough to the burner or the burner holes are plugged or blown out. If the mounting tabs on the new igniter were straight, you will have to bend them to get the igniter closer to the burner. If the igniter is close and still not lighting properly, you will likely need to also replace the burner tube.

    If you’re referring tot he coating on the end of the wire, use heat shrink tubing to cover the wire and terminal. You can find this for purchase at most hardware and home centers. It's available in different sizes and you just cut off a piece slide it on and apply heat to shrink it in place.

    The gas oven heats, but just before reaching the preheat temperature of 400 degrees, it trips the circuit breaker. The breaker has been replaced, the appliance is not connected to a GFI, and the electrical outlet tested fine. What is the cause?

    The wires may have been too close to the flame and the coating may have just broken down over time. If the protective coating on the wires are burnt more than an inch or so, then you may be better off just replacing the igniter.

    What resistance should these igniters measure when they're cold? I have one that measures 170 Ohms, and one that's like 700kOhms. Which one is bad?

  • @repairclinic

    @repairclinic

    10 жыл бұрын

    The readings will vary a little. I took a reading on a new one in stock and got 320 ohms. The best way to see if an igniter is good is to take the amp draw reading. The required amp draw to open the valve is usually listed on the valve body. The amp draw on your igniter should be from 3.3 -3.6 amps. Another way to know if the igniter is bad is the time it takes to open the valve. The gas valve should open within 45 sec to a minute after the oven is turned on. If the gas valve takes longer or never opens when the igniter is glowing replacing the igniter will solve the problem.
