My GE Dishwasher stopped heating the water, steaming, cleaning, and drying my dishes. I replaced the dishwasher heating element but it still didn't work. The BEST fix ending up being to replace the Flood Switch, which has a thermostat unit built in. I could not find documentation or a tutorial anywhere, but this fixed my issue!!! I hope this helps you! Leave a comment and let me know if this fixed your issue!
If the switch doesn't resolve your issue, check your heating element, look for any signs of breaks or cracks.
Also, I believe it's important to prevent the root cause to keep from having to replace this sensor every so often. We were, for the longest time, using the good dish washing detergent. We ran upon hard times and ended up using the cheapest stuff we could find. After 2 months, it wasn't cutting the grease we were putting through the dishwasher and it backed up the sensor. I tried to clean it but nothing but replacing it helped.
Do yourself a favor and use good products in your dishwasher. Below are the links to products we use in our home. Try to clean your dishwasher at least once a month with the Allfresh dishwasher cleaner packs. The Cascade helps to break down all of the grease on plates. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments section below.

    Another great way to get the right part for different dishwashers is to go on to sears give them your model number of dishwasher and then they look up the part for you and give you a part number then I took that number and looked it up on amazon for 1/2 as much... thank you sir I will try this next hopeful the heating element fixes it but I’m happy to have a back up! Just bought a 6 month old dishwasher for $75 bought the heating element for $25 so even if I have to do this part I’ll have a brand new dishwasher for $125 or so 🤞🤞🤞

    Thank you so much! I have been living in my townhouse for almost two years and my GE Adora dishwasher has never worked right. Doesn’t get hot, doesn’t clean the dishes OR dry them. I watched this video and ordered the part (and the necessary tool). Today I replaced the part and now it works like brand new! Only took me 10 minutes to do it also. So easy…anyone can do it. My dishwasher was not drying my dishes and I thought it was the heating element. Luckily we watched this video before pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter and we ordered a replacement flood switch from the GE website. This fixed the problem completely and the dishwasher runs just like new and the dishes are totally dry. Thank goodness we saw this first!! My husband replaced the flood switch without much difficulty. It was a little difficult to get the new flood switch lined up to attach securely, but he managed to do it. Saved us a lot of time and money! Thanks so much!!

    Follow up: this method fixed my drying problem. Thank you for the expertise! A couple pieces of advice for anyone doing this at home: - allow 30-45 minutes for the job - make sure you have a magnetic screwdriver and a telescoping magnet to reach those screws once they are loose - when you disconnect the power from the flood switch, make sure you have something to grab the power cord to prevent it from slipping under the dishwasher (this added about 15 minutes to the job) Again, thanks for this tutorial. Saved me probably $150 from a repairman coming out!

    Thanks! Worked well. I thought I was going to have to take an entire day just to fiddle with my dishwasher. I couldn't find any suggestions like this on other websites. I still checked continuity on the heating element just to start, and that seemed fine. Luckily, I was able to do it without removing it from the unit and didn't have to move my dishwasher out at all! Then I checked the flood switch, and it was gunked up like you wouldn't believe. Easy fix for under $30. Thanks for the link to help with the part. Amazon did end up with the better price versus other replacement part sites. Thanks about the reminder on the monthly dishwasher cleaner packets as well. After we had a successful load with the heated dry, I ran two packets worth of cleaner in one shot just to help flush out any other buildup that I wasn't seeing. And thanks for the tips on being extra careful to not drop those screws! I also took the kickplate off the bottom and placed a cup towel underneath while I worked on it.

    How long does your dishwasher operate before the heating element kicks on? On mine, now that I have the motor fixed, Running Heavy cycle with Boost and Steam turned on, it goes for about 30-40 minutes and 5 Gallons of water before the enclosure gets hot. I'm just curious if that's a normal is all.

  • @BreakFixRepair

    Oh no! Well, I don’t yet but it’s not too hard l. You’ll need to turn the power off to the dishwasher, pull the dishwasher out. (There should be some mounting screws holding it in place). Hopefully there’s enough slack in the power line to keep from having to undo it also. If you can get it out that far then there’s normally two knobs on the back and two electrical attachments where the heating element plugs up. Just take plenty of pictures as you go so you have a reference for when you out it all back together. I hope that helps. Once I’m feeling better I’ll try to make the video to help but hope you get it fixed by then. Let me know if you need anything else.

    Todd Toho I believe you can pull the flood switch to test continuity on the cables but have not done that. To be honest though if you have a dishwasher model with a flood switch it’s more than likely your problem. They tend to fail far more often than the heating element. If you order from the amazon link in the description and it does not fix it, you should be able to return the part. Hope this helps.

  • @BreakFixRepair

    @BreakFixRepair

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you'll need to soak all of the water up with a towel before you remove the sensor. The hole the sensor sits inside of is an opening to the floor below, which is where the wiring harness runs. When you remove the sensor be careful not to let the wiring harness loose or it may fall down below. There's not a lot of slack on it. Good luck! If you need anything else please let me know.

    Mine is filling with water then it stops and won't go any further in the cycle. Was this what yours was doing? the night before it wouldn't kick on at all so i left water with baking soda in the area where the float is and that got it to fill again. But once it gets to it's fill point it just stops. Should I try the float switch?

  • @BreakFixRepair

    @BreakFixRepair

    5 жыл бұрын

    jc51373 that sounds like the problem as the float switch tells the control board how much water is in the dishwasher. Give it a shot and see if that works. Before you buy it you can take it out and soak it in a warm water / vinegar solution for a couple of hours. Then rinse very well. It may just be that the ball is stuck with food debris or grease. When you take it out try to shake it and see if you can hear the ball rattle. Let me know what you find out! Thanks for watching! Also don't forget to remove all of the water as the hole the float switch rests in is a hole that will drain all of that water into your floor. Also make sure you plug the two other holes or you might lose a screw like I did ( bad night!!! )

    @@BreakFixRepair thanks..I just took it apart with the FS still in tact installed. i was able to vacuum out and dry all the water and move the float up and down in it's housing so it functioned properly. I reassembled it all and restarted it while holding the water inlet valve and that seems to be flowing fine so I eliminated that as an issue. Also cleaned out the pipe to the garbage disposal so eliminated that as well. It is now working it's way through a cylcle and I just heard the soap door pop open so we may be back in business..I am going to order a new FS regardless just to have it on hand if this happens again I can fix it straight away..We have a family of 5 and can NOT be without this thing for even 1 day. Eeeek! We rinse our dishes pretty well and i clean the filter regularly, but this is a lesson in being more vigilant about it since there as some crap down in there. Either way I may have fixed it with some baking soda soaking in the sump all night and then manually cleaning it by handed and getting the float to move. Hello, We have a GE GDT580SMF0ES dishwasher that wont dry. I have already replaced the float switch after reviewing your video. I was about to order a heating element next, but I just tested the resistance of the element and get 16.7 ohms, which I think is correct according to some of your replies in the past. I removed the "new" float switch cleaned it and made sure I could hear the float click without any resistance, put it back in, and I still have NO heat/drying element. What would you suggest next? Is this a GE dishwasher? If so my guess would be to fill up the rinse aid and replace the flood switch if you have a model with one. I have another video that’s a complete tutorial on how to replace it! The link to the flood switch is in the description. Hope this helps!

    Tried this fix today, and still no steam or heat. Water is a bit warm, but I imagine that is the hot water line giving a bit of heat to the water. Any ideas on next step?

    We have a different model, but the insides look similar. The machine will fill and drain, but not circulate the water. I friend is coming over tomorrow and we're going to do a clean out of the filters and screens and flood switch to see if that works. I don't look forward to spending $100 on a wash pump if that is the problem.

    My dishwasher looks just like your, but after replacing the heating element & my dishwasher still didn't heat up. I tried the flood switch & that when I realized it's not the same. My dishwasher melted everything....a cutting board & the wash arms & stopped drying. What do you think?I have a GE adora DDT595SGJ0WW

    Oh no!! That is not good!! It sounds like it may be the control board or a high limit thermostat cut off switch which caused it to overheat. Sorry I'm a few days late on the reply. Have you been able to get it fixed yet?

    @@leslieo1628 LOL I'm sorry! Could you run an empty load for me? Can you see if the dishwasher is filling with enough water? it should fill just past the heating element. it could be that there is not enough water and the heating element is overheating everything. I'd let it run for about 30 minutes or until it starts the "cleaning" phase after it's started the initial rinse.

    Let me check. In the meantime check your dishwasher vents for clogs. It should be on the side of the dishwasher or in the door. Also be sure to fill up your rinse aid all the way. Run the hot water at your faucet to ad hot as it’ll go just before starting the dishwasher. Try those things and run a load and let me know if anything helps!

    I'm back to say Thank you soooooooo much!!! I ordered the piece from Amazon and it came yesterday, first I had already had a service man come and say it was fixed he replaced the heating element and also replaced the dispenser door on my GE-GDT655SSJSS I was so upset my dishes came out still wet and not clean and cold after the service it was almost 200$ for the service call. Well I took your advice and had my son-in-law help me take out the switch flood assembly and man oh man I can not believe how much calcium was built up on that assemble and down inside the well, we had had a problem with out water a while back with out water company all mu dishes were coming out white and it was somethign to do with our water system finally they got it fixed. I am sure that is when it started, any way after he took it apart for me I started putting the pieces plus the flood assembly into containers of very warm white vinegar I could not believe what came out of the pieced I even had to scrape some to get it loose and I also soaked the spraying arms in a long baking pan with hot white vinegar and poled all the holes with a dental pick in a kit I had for embroidery. Finally all the pieces were clean and I read somewhere someone said their Flood assembly made a noise when they shook it like when you shake a spray paint bottle well my old one did not do this so I stuck it on a jar filled with hot whit vinegar and I can not believe what ugly stuff I got out of that thing after over an hour working on it and removing ugly stuff it would make a noise when it shook I couldn't really see inside so I figured it was cleaned and I decided to put it back in the dishwasher while I waited till next day for the new one to arrive well the dishwasher seemed to wash better but still did not heat or steam, SO when the new piece arrived I was able to remove the old flow assembly and replace it with the new one ALL BY MYSELF I put dishes and tupperware in the dishwasher as I would and ran the cycle BUT I had to leave for a few hours when I came back there was water setting in the bottom "new problem" then I realized where I did not push the dishwasher back inside the space it was tilted forward some so I figured that was the problem with that I ran the drain and it drained then I started a new cycle and let it run I was soooo happy to finally see STEAM coming from the steam outlet and when it finished everythign was HOT AND DRY Thank you so much for this video I have no idea why the service guy did not know this and fix it the first time. As far as i know yours and another video out there showing how to replace this piece and yours has a link it worked for me I just plugged in my serial number and it confirmed it would work in my machine. I am one happy camber to be able to wash my canning jars again and get them HOT Thank you again I can't wait to wash mire dishes LOL

    I really hate that you had to spend $200 for a dishwasher tech to come out and "fix" it... I'd ask for a refund since they didn't fix the problem! I'm glad this video helped you get your dishwasher back on it's feet though. When mine went out I was leaving to go on a Mission trip to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew in 2018. I ordered a heating element and replaced it before I left, only to have cold, dirty, wet dishes. After the trip I had a new flood sensor waiting on me as we had dishes piled up like crazy. Thankfully this fixed the issue and I wanted to pass it along to people just like you. Thank you for your comments and I hope you have a wonderful day.

    If you don’t have a flood switch then look for the TCO switch. That is the thermal cutoff switch. It’s small and normally in the wiring harness toward the back of the dishwasher. It should be a little switch you just press or flip back on. Hope this helps!

  • @BreakFixRepair

    Thank you for your comment! More than likely yes. Before you do anything though, make sure your rinse aid is full. There's another guy on another video that had the same problem and his rinse aid was just empty. Give that a shot first. If that doesn't work then visually inspect the heating element all the way around for any cuts or broken areas. If you have a multimeter you can check the OHMs. I think it's supposed to read 16.9 OHM but I'm not 100% sure. Also unfortunately the best way to test resistance is with the heating element out of the dishwasher if you have a metal interior. If you're able to test the heating element and it's OK then it may end up being your main board but try those things first and let me know what you find out. Let's get this fixed!!
