GDANSK: THE RANDOM TRAM GAME - throw the dice and that determines which tram route to explore
In theory the idea was simple. Throw two dice, and the number would correspond with a tram route. I was in Gdansk, and the lucky number was 8. I visited the end of the line at Jelitkowo which ended up being a lovely seaside resort. I then caught the tram to the other end of the line, to the slightly gritty town of Stogi and the wide sandy beach of Stogi Plaza. This was my first time at this travel experiment, and it was definitely a success.

As Gdańsk's my home city, it's interesting to watch someone explore the places that are so well-known for me in a random and slightly clueless fashion. And 8 is even the line I use on a regular basis! :D

Although I don't usually travel on route 8, I travel to Brama Wyżynna, the stop Scott was taking the tram from, everyday.

Wyobraź sobie, co by było jakby wylosował linię 7. Najpierw zobaczyłby najbrzydszą dzielnicę Gdańska, a potem znalazł by się na totalnym zadupiu bez niczego. Wtedy ten odcinek nie byłby sukcesem

Fun fact i also use the 8 to get to school on a daily basis
Poland seems more and more fascinating with every vlog.

"Stogi" is the plural of "stóg", meaning a pile of hay or unthreshed grain (a haystack). Jelitkowo probably from the old knightly coat of arms Jelita (intestines), like Alexandria from Alexander the Great. Jelita, three cross spears in a field of red bears. A family born in Poland. From it, a brave soldier, Florian Szary, in the battle for King Władysław I Łokietek (an elbow - he was low) near Płowce was pierced in the stomach (his intestines came out) when he bravely fought with the Teutonic Knights, and the next day he was lying and healing his wounds when he noticed king him, then he was taken and cured by his order, and then he and his family were given another name, Jelita.

i have to admit, it's so cozy to watch someone exploring the city i've been living my entire life, it just really makes me smile and seeing how big excitement you have for travelling by tram (as well as i dislike it after going by it every day to school) and for visiting the beaches i've been on many times before.. gosh, this video is full of happiness for me, i swear
Those dices were very fortunate for you. It's one of two tram lines that provides you to the beach in whole Poland :)
that was fun I used to do something similar but with buses - just take the first bus that comes along and ride it to the terminus, fascinating to see the outskirts of a city, not just the tourist centre

I've done that too!
If you ever play the random metro line game in one of the huge Chinese cities, be sure to bring disdyakis triacontahedron dice :)
I like how the supid numbers of Gdańsk's trams are absolutely perfect for this challange. I have some experience with Gdańsk trams and it was not the best of experiences, especially that I didn't plan on using trams at all, so I'm happy to see someone else enjoying it more
Scott. Really love these videos. Lots of fun.
Does the Random Tram Game have a patent or can other KZreadrs use it (under license of course)? :D Fantastic mate, this is what travel is all about, thanks for keeping us all entertained :)

Loving your travel videos, Scott ! A fascinating insight into various countries and their cultures. Brilliant 👍👍👍
Loved the video as always and your dice game.
Thanks Scott. Really enjoying your Poland adventure. Makes me want to visit soon.
Grand Video ! Great Idea the Tram Game ! Thank You !
I really enjoy your videos, you have a wonderful sense of adventure, keep up the good work
Fascinating, Scott. You get to the places other KZreadrs don'y reach.
Love the dice game! Great vid! 👏👏👌👍
I really enjoyed this video. Plenty of humor and adventure. Wonderful.
Love it! Thank you
Love your videos!
My goodness Scott, your dice game reminds me of The Diceman which was on the Discovery channel late nineties. Great series with just the presenter and a cameraman. Their travels depended entirely on the dice. Brilliant... 😁👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant!
I love the way you say Jelitkowo :D and it's so cool to see so well known to me places on the YT
Magic Glasgow Dice - you are on to something.. Many thanks for yet another entertaining and informative video.
You are a very positive person, I like your videos!
Hi Scott another excellent video and i really enjoyed seeing you going an exploring different places. The random tram game is fun and please keep doing it on your channel.
Love the random destination fantastic idea such fun ❤❤
Will certainly play the random game, what a good idea to make you go somewhere you may not have thought of
😀"Random tram "game is an excellent idea!
Great video as always. Hope you try the dice experiment again soon!
Great video, i myself live in stogi, glad you liked the beach, keep up great work!
Thoroughly enjoyed your game! Loved the video especially the wooden “ stones”🇨🇦
That was fun! Cheers from 🇨🇦!
Loved it I met you on Friday night it was nice surprise ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great game, you need a portable random number indicator to cover numbers higher than 12 (or more dice). Could also include buses. Another fascinating video, keep them coming.
Love this idea!!!!
Great video Scott
Random travel is a game changer! I go random without trying!..or sense of direction 🤣🤣...seen lots of places I never wanted too or planned on... Try three dice and flight numbers!... Came across you randomly, been subscribed since👍
amazing film!!!
I really loved the video, thank you. I like
Well, Scottie, route 8 was a lucky dip situation. You sucked me right in, and I wasn't disappointed. At each end of the tramline was a quite respectable beach environment. My wife likes Nutella, from her early days in Italy. But to have it dripping from your tucker aint my cuppa tea at all. Those Polish crows aren't anything like the crows here in Australia, as you would know. But when I was in Scotland the gulls were massive compared to Aussie gulls. Almost as big as emus mate. Looking forward to more of your Polish capers. Keep it up Scottie!
love your video,s great work
What a lovely video!
I must say it is a great idea this random tram game of yours. :) I like trams,..., sadly in my country (Slovenia) there are not trams anymore. Trams that operated in Ljubljana were stopped way back (in 1958) and the tram lines were dismantled. There was a tram line also conecting town of Piran with railway station in Portorož but was also removed (together with narrow gauge railway from Trieste to Poreč). Anyway I like your videos and hope one day you will visit Slovenia too. Take care.
I travelled by rail around Italy on the toss of a coin. It’s a great way to travel and discover places you’d never visit.
Excellent video well done ! Looks as if you did plenty of walking !
Greetings from Gdańsk! Have a nice day :)
That was one lucky roll! From beach to beach. Makes you think "from disco to disco" ;)
Wow! I live near to Jelitkowo but nearest to Park Przymorze and... u show my block 10:43 Yay! . Great video from my town.
Hello! Found your channel totalyl by accident and I love the content so far! Been a bit into travelling before Covid struck us, but I suppose your channel is a good way to get back to my plans. Also been to Gdansk, or more specifically - The Tricity as they call it a few times and I pretty much enjoyed it probably as much as you do. Tho I haven't seen those areas which you showed in the video. I honestly love how cruddy looks the sign at 13:49 Looks like it's been standing there for 40+ years and never been renovated since then XD
awesome, greetings from Jelitkowo
Fantastic and very different type of video. You landed on your feet really well there Scott. P.S: Liked the little touch of the Ukranian flags on the trams on the Network
I do enjoy your videos, I just wish they were longer, I'm sure you could fit more in.
i am loving it!
I like your idea and I'm glad you liked Gdańsk! Here's one thing to consider though: When using 2 dice like this, the probability of outcomes is not equal. 2 and 12 are least probable (only one way that could happen), 7 is most probable (six ways that could happen), 6 and 8 are tied for second most probable (five ways that could happen). You could use a single dice and then a coin flip to decide whether to add 6 to the dice.
Can't help thinking you need to invest in a folding bike to take with you as you seem to do a fair mileage on foot. Great video Scott.
Fun trip. I did the same in Amsterdam years ago and no matter what tram I took or where we ended up, it was magic.
Dice role travel sounds fun! May have to number bus and train routes out of Wrexham to match a pair of dice to the routes and then let the chaos ensue!
I love random exploring too!!
Ahh you ended up on the beach to beach line (I kind of wish you ended up on something going through Opera Bałtycka though, I would have loved a reaction to the singing stop announcement 😁)! Stogi is my favourite beach in the city, the sand goes way further than anywhere else, seems so much more spacious. I feel tempted to do this one day and take my sketchbook with me, whichever end of line the dice and trams take me to ;) By the way, your map might have been outdated, they got rid of line 11 quite some time ago and the end stops of some lines change every now and then, especially 8 and 9.
Plaża means beach which would be a giveaway, if you knew this. Also, you were lucky to get a line which goes from a beach to a beach! Well done, sir! 👍
We did similar in Prague, just picked a tram and went to the end of the line. The bar we found was brilliant and much cheaper than the central area. Spent too long in there, came out to about 2 inches of snow! Didn't affect tram operation in any way.
Great video.
I got this recommended to me. Its fun to see my home city from the perspective of a tourist/traveller It is common in Gdańsk for the tram lines to end near the sea. You need to have in mind the different numered routes are arranged to cover a big area of the city. Since gdańsk is pretty thin and long many of them run on the same route most of the course with minor changes :D
that so cool ! i will do something like that in other city's. thanks
You've got to love the flags on the trams ! Wish they had them in the UK. Great game, might have to try that out myself!

in the UK would be the rainbow flags.
Not gonna lie, it's interesting game. I'd like to see more!
Hi, thanks for visiting my city ! That`s funny you`ve been in the places I usually walk everyday ! I hope you`ve like it ! Besides that, i`ve spotted that there are not much English subtitles on our signs etc in the less tourist places. I think we should change that in our cities / country in the next years as we are still developing country but the numbers of foreign tourists are drasctically increasing over the last years.
Ah, the ticket machines of Gdańsk. Truly, the bane of public transportation
Best game ever! Next time I'll be in Gdańsk I'm gonna play it!
Gosh. You do get around. I went to Dresden from southern England in the days when there were helpful people by platform 1 at Victoria BR station from whom one could buy tickets to europe and ask questions. These days I wouldn't even know how to book.
Lmao, great idea and vid; and I agree, many councils around the world could learn from putting more bins around!! You theoritically could do something similar here in Rio, but you'd only need a 1d4, I think theres 3 light rail lines (bus station - ferries/local airport) the centre is much more interesting. I'm not sure about the tram itself, only one line (perhaps a second, longer, route?) up into a hilly, Bohemian area. Metro only has 2 (and an extension to one, which they called number 4?!?!?). There are four train lines, but they all go to the suburbs and sleeper towns. There really is nothing interesting reached by rail, just people's housing! 😑
Nice one mate
as steve lister comments. i loved: The Diceman. discovery channel. late nineties, early noughties..would love to see more videos using this format.. cooo#l vlog
cant wait to you do a video on the Luas tram in Dublin and the Red Line.

I'd be up for watching that too 😊
Jelitkowo you should pronounce Ielitkovo. "j" is pronounced like "i". Stogi means "stacks" like haystacks. Probably there were fields some time ago. I don't know how it works in Gdańsk but in Warsaw you can by a tram/bus ticket online, use an app and scan it when you are on the bus. Loved your video as usual!
Had you ended up on tram 10 you could've ended up in my street, and the local supermarket in Galeria Morena sells IRN-BRU
Have you been reading The Dice Man? Great to see the beaches of Poland.
A bit of rolling stock trivia, when you were travelling from Jelitkowo to Stogi you got on a Bombardier NGT6 tram, there are only 3 of those in Gdańsk.
There was a TV programme years ago called The Diceman,. Basically a bloke with a set of dice and a cameraman does all sorts travel wise
Game is ok. Tray to visit all loops, and tram streets, like a tram geek😄 Gdańsk have a very coll network, Stogi Plaża, Nowy Port, and Jelitkowo loops are the best.
You should check out Gdynian trolleybuses too Althrough there aren't many interesting places in Gdynia except beach, forest and city centre which you have already explored But still, there's line 27 which 1. drives through basically whole city, 2. is being operated by articulated trolleybuses, which is cool I still remember times when they were new and suprising here
It was fun. I live there. ❤
Pebbles of Wood are fantastic :)
This was my route to school for 4 years,I am from Stogi, and now I live in Bedford UK :)
Poland has some graffiti or is it the polish art work. Thank you for sharing scott I always look forward to your videos
Fun fact - Stogi is considered one of the most dangerous parts of Gdańsk. I'm from Gdańsk and we used to say Stogi is a separate city, that was run by Tygrys (tiger), an ex-gangster whose gone crazy after his son's death. It's easy to get mugged there due to high drug usage among the youngs who migrate to that part of the city because of lower living cost then center or Przymorze for example.
KZread finally recommended me something valuable
Just a tidbit: Stogi plaża has a dot on the ż, which is pronounced as zj. Which makes plaża sound like plage, French for beach.
Going to Jelitkowo pronunciations YELYTKOVO. I grow up in Gdańsk and never question name of the places but now you made me think and oh boy the closer to the nam of yelitkowo in English would be,, intestines,, oh this is terrible 🤣🤣🤣
Hi scott, living in Scotland but from gdansk, its pronunciated "Leet kovo". Very interesting video

ye leet kovo
Poland's public transport system puts the UK's to absolute shame - Gdansk looks very appealing!
2 dice still have the problem of strongly favoring numbers closer to the center of the range, especially 7. This is noticable when you make a table of 6x6, with rolls from first die correspinding to rows and the second one - columns. You'll then notice that in the 36 possible combinations si of them are 7, there are five 6s and 8s, and four 5s and 9s and so on, so overall there was a much larger chance to land on 8 than, for example, 12. You can also test it by well, rolling the pair of dice and counting how often the results turn up.
hey scotty, what you can visit is freiburg in germany there they have a very nice tram network and nice city , grtz wietze braem from belguim
Might have to do this with the Tube, next time I'm in London.
In the introduction you have an old plan of the tram network in Gdańsk. Currently, line 11 is not operating, and instead of Przeróbka, line 3 goes to the Chełm Witosa terminus, and line 5 runs to Zaspa (temporarily to Oliwa). Line 2 runs (temporarily) to the Jelitkowo terminus instead of Oliwa, while line 12 runs between Lawendowe Wzgórze and Zaspa.
I'm looking forward to the Croydon random tram game but I have a feeling that would be slightly underwhelming 😂
