It is so helpful to have videos that really stretch your understanding and allow you to find and analyse moments in the play that I find other AIC videos just skip over and then focus on the surface level arguments! So grateful-especially as my school did this part of the English course in lockdown :)

Could u say that when the inspector talks about taking the earth. Could he be talking about how Eric stole 50 pounds from his dad and that it’s foreshadowing. Or is that wrong

Great question and I think that's a really interesting point. I think there's room to argue that there are similarities and differences between these lines. If we consider what Mr Birling was saying in that metaphor, he was basically suggesting that the working class would become greedy and want too much if given too much opportunity and the Inspector's 'take the earth' suggests at a much heavier level of greed. However, Eric didn't steal the money out of a greed; he stole it out of desperation to try and help Eva. In this sense, he isn't behaving in a 'take the earth' kind of way. Then again, stealing from a business with no consideration of the consequences to others is a behaviour that really echoes the behaviours of Mr Birling - refusing to pay more to his workers and firing some of them with no consideration of the consequences to their lives. AND when the Inspector says 'take the earth', he is suggesting at a lack of consideration for others which both Mr B and Eric have. In this sense, Eric's behaviour of stealing £50 *is* like him 'taking the earth' as the Inspector said.

Hi Miss, could you say that the inspector’s constant targeting of Sheila Birling could be symbolic of the inspector exploiting her to the extent where she feel too emotionally strong. And also, just a generic question could using pretzel paragraphs allow me to get a high grade or could it hinder me from exploring my answers?

I don't think the Inspector is exploiting her. He is recognising the potential in her and trying to draw out more of her left-leaning values. Sheila, unprompted by the inspector, says 'but they aren't cheap labour, they're people' - she demonstrates an empathy her father lacks and shows herself early on to be different from him. The Inspector brings more of that out of her. If anything, Sheila gains the confidence to fully express herself thanks to the Inspector's investigation. Pretzel is a paragraph structure that can help get a high structure, yes
