It's not exactly a gourmet meal but it will certainly suffice after a long day in the saddle. In a quick meal like this, you are looking to replenish your carbohydrate stores and ideally put some protein into your body so that your muscles can recover.

Global Cycling Network not for bike packing but I was camping with friends once and we made steak and eggs over an improvised fire. One of my best meals ever haha

Rice with squirrel meat and wild greens the only bit I brought with me was the rice and a small baggie of seasonings (salt,pepper,oregano,sage and marjoram). I collected the greens along the way and killed the squirrel with a throwing stick at the camp site. Best bikepacking meal I ever had now camping meals.... Well that's a whole other story.

Got lost once and rode for 11 hours hoping that at the end of the day to get to a certain camping place. It didn't happen and because I was wrecked and there was a storm coming, I set my tent in a very quiet nice place near a graveyard. Had the best canned fish in the history of men kind :))) then, in the morning, I tried to make coffee at a candle light, but I couldn't get the water to boil. So I swallowed two tea spoons of ground coffee and drank the water :))) not very satisfying ;)

Shelled barley with tinned green beans (throw in the water that's in the beans), sliced chorizo and kabanossa, added to the barley, followed with wild strawberries for dessert.
Josh's reaction as he realises he gave Si most of the tuna is hilarious!
Looks like Si got his fair share of 3cans of tuna while Josh ended up with the pure rice on the bottom of the pot :D 7:05

I can only wonder that are you guys actually doing if the tensest thing in the video is the rice pouring.
And this is one of the beauties of cycling. A bowl of rice and tuna becomes a gourmet meal at the end of a ride. And Josh and Si can imagine themselves to be multi-star chefs out there where nobody is counting :)
If you throw the rice in at the same time as the water you cut the cooking time way down and save yourself some fuel.. or even soak the rice for half an hour in the cold water too.. it’ll soak up some water and take even less time

How about Josh vs Emma cook off, kind of Great British Cycling Bake Off?
Instant potatoes have become my favorite carb base instead or rice or noodles. They setup in hot water as save a lot of gas. They come in lots of flavors and are super tasty.
without being in the same kind of desperate situation: I ate like this for years! And i find it delicious.

I am big fan of Couscous as bikepacking/touring food. Requires far less time to prepare, so your gas canister will last longer ;-)
@gcn

Nice idea!
Eating rice in the country of couscous? 😀 Could you buy something more nutritious at a local market, for instance, hummus or some local veggies? I've always find it good to carry some fat, say a 250ml little bottle of olive oil or coconut oil that you can refill from time to time. And of course peanuts, nuts and olives. And I always carry some turmeric and black pepper for a simple "curry" and as antiinflammatory.

Couscous would've been much better idea. Saves on fuel by far and you can have it for breakfast with honey (if fortunate to have some).
Hey guys! I'm a tour cyclist myself (fully loaded touring, not fast and light bikepacking) here in the USA. Some other stuff that's good for bikepacking. Quinoa and couscous cooks amazingly fast and is light on fuel consumption. Some brands of instant mashed potatoes need only water and come premixed with cheese. And you can get tuna, salmon and surprisingly chicken in tins and pouches that come in sauces. And always bring Tabasco sauce, it makes anything edible.
So when will we see GCN bikepacking masterchef become a thing? Dan can be Gordon Ramsay if he wants

A good tip for you guys! Get your prep done first and only light the stove when ready to avoid wasting gas if your in countries where fuel is sparse. After years of motorbiking camping I always prefer the army type hexamine stove.Tablets and stove are small so pack better than gas canisters.

The staple breakfast for me when out walking is porridge oats made just by adding boiling water. You can whack in sugar and anything else you have for flavour. They don’t take up much space and are light.

I never thought I would see Simon with a big saddle pack, lol. I was looking for the frame mounted pump. 😉
Love the extreme rice pouring music! ha ha
Beans and bread and jam, my favourite backpack cuisine XD
Cooking rice is different in the Philippines, we wash rice and then measured water the length of rice and water by finger then start to cook, thd main food in the Philippines is rice.
The last time I used the phrase "tuna with big flavour", I was writing a Valentine's card to my mum.
I like to use converted rice when Im camping out, ready quicker, less water, and no rinsing (though I know you didnt rinse it). Also box macaroni with a butter pat and single creamer from the cafe. Can tuna is a nice touch though, like this better than the dehydrated packs that are often pricey and not that yummy.
It’s Morocco- Cous Cous is everywhere !
I make food similar to this with my Jetboil. It's pretty much all that stuff but in one package. Plus it has a push button flint. Not only that it doubles as a french press.
@ryand141

Heard good things about jetboil. How does it double as a French press exactly?
You can add red lentils to the rice; they cook in the same time. Balanced protein and totally dry.
Definitely useful, can't wait to go on my own trip.

Global Cycling Network Lands end to John O'Groats and back home (South West Wiltshire) before backpacking the highlands next spring, so got a while yet sadly. Will do a real trip in a couple of years, need to get used to the longer distances first.
Boil in bag rice and a can of Dinty Moore beef stew . On a cold winter backpacking trip
Watching them cooking rice is a bit odd, as a Filipino we put the rice first then water, then we measure it with our fingers, the water should be even/half accordingly to the height of the rice in the metal pot. :)

Bad idea to pour in half the rice as steam gets in the bag and sets the remaining rice. Also better to use a cut down wooden spoon. Better for the pan and you don't get that scratchy noise. Also remember that water boils at a lower temperature at altitude. Ok for coffee, terrible for tea. In Morocco you do need water purifiers too. While I'm at it, plastic mugs are better than metal for not burning your lips. Last tip: tubes of Tartex if can still get them. Great for flavouring food. Priceless for veggies abroad.
Isabel. This man knows how to dine fancy ♥
Master chef josh!! 😊🖒
"The power of outside, the power of hunger". Go Simon! BTW with a little extra storage, it may be well worth it to pick up a cucumber and tomatoes at the next village to add freshness to your cuisine.
Idahoan Loaded mashed potatoes, freeze dried hot vegetables, and spam. 👌
Invaluable to watch others cooking! Just to say that a country like Morocco does have food solutions in every nook and cranny, and the people are more than happy to have the extra money.
I feel like there needs to be more crossover between bike packers and backpackers. Because dehydrated and freeze dried food is a staple of backing meals these days and I don't seen any reason why they can't also work for bike packing. If you are carrying a stove and a kettle, and only cooking dinner and maybe a breakfast or two, you can easily carry a weeks worth of dinners and more on a bike.
@antiundead

I find when touring for weeks on the bike, I want real food. The more carbs and protein the better. What sort of freeze-dried backpacking food can do this?
@GregoryVeizades
6 жыл бұрын
Cormz Zilla Freeze Dried food is not the same as Dehydrated food. The freeze drying process preserves texture and nutritional content while removing all moisture. Backpackers Pantry is typically my brand of choice but Alpine Aire also has some excellent dishes. Freeze Dried food very much turns back into real food when rehydrated. There are basic add water and let sit dishes that are still amazing. Thing beef stroganoff and egg noodles, Pad Thai, Curries, Mashed Potatoes, and soups. But there are others that add a cooking element with dough mix to make biscuits and gravy for instance. Im on mobile but I'll respond again with some links. But I think another advantage of Freeze Dried foods is the fuel efficiency. Because you don't have to keep the stove on to cook the food most dishes, once the water is boiled to can turn off the stove.

Interesting, i'm open to new food ideas! I looked into both those brands, they seem great nutritional content. Do you know of any good ones that are Europe/uk based? Shipping from the US isn't the easiest when it comes to food and customs. The one downside i'm noticing though with this type of food is they take a lot of water to rehydrate.
Looks tasty👍.
For heaven sake Josh hang onto that pot when stirring! I thought you were going to end up with gourmet Morocan Sand Rice.
Have been eating Pasta with Tomatosauce for the last two weeks... Two and a half months to go on my trip through Europs
rice is the most volume / water consumption / easy to clean basic food, more extreme, you can try the fried flour

Si, gotta share the Tuna 😂😂😂 poor Josh
Pre cooked oats and compact rye bread will serve as good as rice or pasta and no cooking material needed. But playing house in the open ads to the fun or charm of it I suppose. As longs as i'm not backpacking the cooking material on my bike that is.
How hungry was Si!!! 😂😂
The lower-half part of the rice (the portion that Josh ate) had less Tuna and sauce as you can see when Josh stop pouring the rice onto Si's bowl.. I feel sorry for him :D
I know how to make a basic meal, dead easy (in true Jon 9750 Cannings style) - put water in the pan, boil, place pasta in pan boil DEAD EASY - add protein side of meal if needed if youre a hard-core roady ! 😋 😁
İt would be nıce to see how you wash the dishes out there with limited water.
Which type of rich you using? Long grain? Easy cook? Basmatti?also josh took his shoes off to air his feet after allday in the saddle.👍😉
Awesome video guys!....just hurts to see rice being cooked as pasta...:(

Rice and catfood. Mmmmm. As it's Morocco I'd go for Ainsley Harriot's spice sensation couscous, with a tin of sardines in tomato and chilli sauce stirred into that. 3 mins. bish bash bosh. cost about 90p.
A small multi spice bottle can make things edible.
Did Si finish his meal?
Josh any plans to come to india

Fast food is pretty good for bike packing. Cheap and calorie dense. Probably just need to add some fruit / veg for fibre where possible or oats if stuck
if you run out of water for cooking, you can always pee in the pan. if bear grylls can drink his own pee direct from the source, im sure that boiling it wont matter too much in a survival situation, plus no need for extra salt.
it's tuna with tomato soup
it looks to me like josh got rice a when he poured it into si's cup it was rather white looking and not much big tasty tuna gloop!
I find it funny that people use gas stoves and such when you almost always have wood, sticks and stuff around to make a bonfire for free.
Don't light your gas (fuel) until all your prep work is done. Saves wasting it.

As a Hiker and a Cyclist, this isn't for me. My cookpot only ever boils water. Zip locks and dehydrated meals are my go-to.
what i have learned in the military is that when in the field there is no water spots unless any rivers or ponds are nearby to filter and boil the water but when cooking into a metal container just add the water and food in there a little dust doesnt hurt anything
