GBC Kanati Mongrel ATV Tire Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

GBC Motorsports helped revolutionize the high-performance side-by-side tire market back in 2012 with the release of the Kanati Mongrel. The Mongrel featured the type of tread design that drivers were looking for from truck tires, but in a lighter weight design to meet the performance demands of side-by-sides. The tire was a hit, enjoying immediate success in the racing and has become a go-to tire for many who drive in typically dry conditions found out West.
A while back, GBC started producing 23” and 25” versions of the Mongrel, making them suitable for use on ATVs. Having experienced their superior performance in dry conditions in many side-by-sides, we ordered a set of their 25x8-12 fronts and 25x10-12 rears to put to the test on a 2019 Suzuki KingQuad 750. The KingQuad’s light enough to provide a good feel for the tires’ weight and ride quality, yet powerful enough to put traction capabilities to the test.
The Kanati Mongrel is not what we’d consider to be a multi-season, wet, or dry tire like GBC’s Dirt Commander. However, if your ATV could benefit from a set of trail tires that will excel on dry surfaces including rocks, gravel, dry dirt, sand, or loam with only light mud use, the Mongrel is a tire worth looking into.
Farmers, construction companies, and business owners who need a long-lasting tire with DOT approval, or a tire that will roll smoothly and perform well on paved surfaces while delivering enough traction to go off-road, the GBC’s Kanati Mongrel ATV tire may be just the tire you’re looking for.

    I have a new set on my Kawasaki teryx. Previously had maxis bighorn tires. I wanted to trade because I do some driving on paved surfaces and the bighorns didn’t last well at all. 2-3 years and they were going bald. And there’s only one thing on the farm I like bald. The mongrels don’t have as good traction as the bighorns in mud. They do a bit more slipping and sliding. However for my purposes I still get where I’m going. If I were going to be trying to climb muddy hillsides all day long I’d probably want to stick with dedicated mud tires. The mongrels also do a fair job at handling snow. I can get up a fairly steep drive in snow with them. The issue of longevity is still being settled. One last little oddity. When driving in mud, mud is thrown both forwards and backwards. May not matter to you. My dog gets a free mud bath when running in front of me.

    These seem like nice tires, but nothing seems to set the apart from so many amazing tires already out there... Unless they are much less expensive? Also, as you mentioned they are a heavy tire.

  • @ATVonDemand

    @ATVonDemand

    What sets them apart from most tires that we have seen is the fact they have DOT Approval. Due to the fact that they put more rubber on the ground than most they work well in rocks and other hard surfaces. While they are not saying the tires they do a pretty good job at staying on top and not burying themselves easily. Those are the things that we would say most set these tires apart. As we mentioned and you noticed, they are a little heavier than some multi-purpose ATV tires. Although they're probably not as heavy as some mud purposed tires

    @@ATVonDemand fair enough. With the focus somewhat on "road driving" do you get the I. Pression they won't get worn down fast on pavement like many mudding and similar tires do?

    A bit more mediocre due to the closer Lug design it doesn't clear its self well but will work! From my experience these are great work tires but a ton better in powerfull and heavier machines. These are great on light sands, dry rocks, rock crawling(dry) , asphalt, and typical trail riding on rough rocks and gravel. This was in a yamaha rhino.

    This is how you know viewers are paying attention. The manufacturers put that on machines to try and avoid being sued by people who go out and do foolish things. The cpsc is an overreaching organization. We include disclaimers like that in our videos because we work directly with the ATV manufacturers for some of our test units so we have to watch their backs on the legal stuff. That being said, they have no control over our opinions. Thanks for watching. Great comment.

    I think I’ll stick with Bighorn 2.0’s. While not DOT approved, they’re a true all terrain tire for an ATV/SxS that handle mud and loamy/ loose soil much better than these IMO.

    We would say your opinion is right on the money. This would be a good tire for somebody who is typically in dry conditions or orsomeone that operates on pavement some or all of the time.
