    xXfzmusicXx this was exactly my thoughts. It looked on the video like the body was made with a 3D printer. You could see what appeared to be filament lines. I could be wrong. But for a Kit, where you must solder and put together, plus I assume, provide the gameboy, this is way too expensive. You are approaching territory of a used switch. And could certainly pick up a used GameCube with the officially licensed accessory for less. No thanks...

    I have no idea why Metal Jesus doesn't use 5x for GB/GBC. That fills the screen perfectly vertically without any interpolation. I don't think MJR realizes that settings are seperate between GB/GBC and GBA. Use 5x for GB/GBC and use either 4x or 4.5x for GBA. 4.5x for GBA will fill the screen vertically but interpolation is added to slightly soften the pixel edges to reduce shimmering.

  • @Xilefian

    @Xilefian

    5 жыл бұрын

    For other people reading this the reason why 5X is perfect for GB/GBC is that the vertical resolution of these consoles is 144 pixels and 144 x 5 = 720 The GBA has 160 pixels vertical, 160 x 4 = 640, so it doesn't fill 720p, however 160 x 4.5 = 720 so by integer scaling 4x and then linear scaling to fit 720 you'd end up with a fill display with good pixel ratio and no shimmering (as the transition point between pixels will be linearly interpolated). So the ideal image, as stated by charvelgtrs, would be scaled 5x for GB/GBC and 4.5x for GBA. If the image is being cut-off at the top/bottom then your TV display has poor over-scan and needs adjusting in its settings (I'd be incredibly surprised if Metal Jesus hasn't already done this - but if he claims there's image being cut-off then it may very well be the case that his television is not set-up for gaming).

  • @charvelgtrs

    @charvelgtrs

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Xilefian I'd only recommend 4x for GBA for those that want to use those scanline features. The scanlines might not line up correctly in 4.5x mode. Otherwise stick to 4.5x mode.

  • @Xilefian

    @Xilefian

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@charvelgtrs Yeah if the LCD grid mode is done as a simple darkening of a single pixel then it could result in not lining up or being mismatched in 4.5x mode, however if it is done as a shader that darkens fragments based on distance to the edge of the LCD cell (how it should ideally be done) then it will visually look fine. My main concern for 4.5x is having the image trashed further with 1080p displays stretching that final 720p image. 1440p (2x) and 2160p (3x) would be fine.

    If you had both consoles plugged into the same tv at the same time it’s possible that the retron input lag you were feeling could be due to it not being in the priority HDMI slot on your TV, there’s usually one slot that outputs higher Hz and reduces input lag, but anyways great vid as always and this is some really cool tech!

Great video as always, would have loved to have seen the build of the unit as part of the review but I’m assuming they sent you a pre built one of course. well these mostly are after all, you can't easily and cheaply produce plastic shells outside of 3D printing after all. Milling plastic is an option but you waste tons of material, and asking for injection molded plastic shells like actual retail consoles cost A LOT. And I do mean it, they are cheap to produce once you go mass production, but the tooling costs for producing plastic shells is hella costly, the initial cost for 1000 units (usually yes, no less than that much is sold at once for injection molded plastic stuff, custom LCDs and so on), goes for some few thousands of dollars. That is, initial cost NOT counting the 1000 shells, just the cost for the engineers to make the molds for your plastic part.

    Hey MetalJesusRocks, that kind of on-off contact switch is actually hella reliable, even more so than most rockers or push buttons. They typically have heavier, more solid bases as well since it's usually a heavily soldered or wired contact connection. Sure, there's cheap ones, but check your arcade cabinets. Some of the on-offs (usually on the top or back of the cabinet) still have a nice solid click to them and work just fine, despite being installed in the 90's or even 80's in some cases. I'll take something heavy and sturdy, if a little bulky, if it means better build reliability. Kudos to Woozle, I'd love to see their workspace!

It's for people who want a portable system and don't care about or want the console functionality of the switch but still want to play it's games. Like the 2ds, for people who don't care about the 3d. Or the Wii mini that didn't connect to the net for people who don't care to play online games.
