    This reminded me of our sons experience rowing a PB at college. He went sub 6 but felt like his eyes were going to pop. Bad migraine. Vomiting. His coach stood over him and asked for a thumbs up or down. Thumbs down meant call an ambulance. He gave a thumbs up and recovered. Scary.

    I did a 500m last week and 1.28 was my average, I literally scraped under 1.30min by the narrowest of margins as my legs caved and the last couple of pulls were all arms. These boys have some steel in them to hold that on 2k, remarkable athletes

    Amazing performance on the 2k Cam. Heart was pounding just watching, brought back distant U23 memories from a very long time ago. Great credit to you for full transparency around everything you are doing. It's stressful enough preparing and attending trials without putting together all the footage you do. It's compelling to watch. Better luck next time in the pair, only a few seconds separating you and 3rd. From the short clip looks like you are generating good power, lots of km's over the winter in the small boats and I am sure you will be at the top or thereabouts. Best of luck

    Oh my word. It brings the memories back. Feeling like you have done well and then seeing what really good looks like. Quite how deep you have to dig to do a PB. That feeling; throwing up (bad) versus I pushed harder than I have ever done before (good). Many years ago, squad rowing, on the erg next to chips like Matt Pinsent and Jonny Searle, feeling satisfied and not very good at the same time. Xx:51 - I hope that you’re feeling rather pleased with yourself.👍

    PB,,,,, aawwwww yeaaaaaa. How we loves the pain?!! Boyce Budd, Vesper 6seat 1964 Gold in Tokyo, speaks to the pain in a video in 1999. He expresses that 1000meters in his mind says Bronxe would be good/ok. Then with 500meters to go when the thoughts wander for that 1/4 second, do I have enough left. And then, the finish line. And he says, you just want the pain to go away. And it gets worse. It wells up, and comes in waves. It is minutes later that the crew can congratulate each other. He describes other sport races where when the winner crosses the line,,they are able to toss their arms above their head in victory. Sometimes we sit as winners looking a little bit dead. Congratulations on that PB. Looks like a very good leg day. Aweee yeaa.

Just wondering (if this isn’t too personal!) what you’re thinking about/what motivates you through the 2k, especially around the 1500-500 mark where the end still isn’t really in sight. Awesome video, definitely one of my favourites of yours. I thought it looked like you were rowing quite short for a lot of the 2k, is that the angle or deliberate? (bar spinning it up at the end). Also really interesting to see the different erg styles amongst the country's elite guys, Sholto's style is so unique and his rate doesn't seem to touch yours for most of the piece! And seeing how people react to the post 2k 'state' is incredible...thanks for the video!

  • @CameronBuchan

    @CameronBuchan

    It's deliberately short! My rate was quite high, especially for someone my size but feels comfortable. I tend to waste a lot of energy if I lengthen out on something like a 2k

    I have always thought Sholto's "body type" is unique. He is a pure champion -- definitely one of my heroes. In Tokyo, or perhaps Paris, maybe we will see a GB 8 with Sholto stroking, Ollie in six, and Big Mo and Cam filling the Engine Room. Gold, for sure! My all-time favorite from those Yale boats is Nate Goodman (perhaps because he is from Montclair, New Jersey -- about 15 miles from my house). I can't find out what he is doing now, though. He had the best drive and rhythm that I have ever seen in a university oarsman. Watch the final from the 2015 Henley Ladies Plate final. To set the scene, Yale had won the Eastern Sprints, where Cam's Northeastern won the Silver -- only 1.2 seconds behind Yale. The Elis then bombed the semi-final of the IRA (US collegiate national championship) and had to race (and win) the "B" final. A week after the IRA, Yale beat Harvard for the first time in over a decade. By contrast, Yale's Henley opponent, U. Washington, had just won the IRA. Destiny awaited on the Thames, after Yale resurrected its season on the Th"ay"mes, in New London. Enjoy: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKt1p8uSnKTNctI.html (Nate is stroking; Sholto is a freshman in the bow).

    Thanks for your reply Cameron. Question for you: is it permissable at the highest level to use something like foam on the seat to help you ? Or do you have to forego it in competition? Would it be judged as giving you an unfair advantage? I'm referring to the erg here not on the water. At 6.2 and 83 kilos I can never hope to match what you 'giants' achieve but i absolutley love the challenge of the erg. It tests every aspect of your being. I did my first 1 hour row yesterday and clocked 13,237 metres. I think it will take a week at least to get over it....! Love your vlogs, keep them coming. Cheers, Blair.

    This was essentially a competition and I was allowed. Alot of Crossfit athletes use foam pads too. It helps me becauae I'm a bit larger than what the rowing machine is built for. Others use them for comfort. There are people your height pulling similar and faster splits than me!

    That was awesome, Cam. I was nervous the whole time, and the waiting the extra day to see the vlog was tough. But not as tough as you. Congratulations on the 2K. Anytime that you PB -- especially at a competition -- should be a 10. As for the pair, it takes a long time to get comfortable in that boat. And you still rowed well. Robson and you beat Sholto. He is a champion. He won Sprints four times in a row. He won IRA his Junior and Senior year. I don't think he lost a race those two years (though they might have won Silver at the 2018 San Diego Crew Classic; that is his only race since 2016 that I haven't seen). He is also a bit of a pair specialist. He won the 2018 World University Games pair with Harry Glenister (and didn't Glenister win trials with George Rossiter?). You had a brilliant weekend. Thank you for sharing it with the Yamsquad -- especially thank you for including the entire 2K. That was the coolest thing that I have watched in a long time. Best, Jamie #Yamsquad

    Great work..... Maintaining a 2:05-ish split for 8 minutes is a great achievement and requires a decent level of fitness. Most muggles ( non rowing folk ) would be dead after 3 minutes at that pace. Keep at it, and good luck for your next PB....

    I’m a novice cox at uni so I know basically nothing about rowing, I just wanted to ask about your technique - to me in my limited knowledge your sequencing looked a bit funny on the erg. Maybe it’s just the way we’re trained but you used your arms and body simultaneously with the legs rather than legs then body tilt then arms

  • @CameronBuchan

    @CameronBuchan

    5 жыл бұрын

    You are right! The sequencing isn't ideal. It is an unfortunate consequence of not having my good technique 100% natural so you see more of a default technique! On top of that my focus is greatly on the number on the screen rather than the technique!
