Bio of Gayatri Asokan
Gayatri Asokan is a singer who has made her mark in Indian film music , Hindustani classical and ghazal genres . She started training in Carnatic music at a very young age from Sri Nedumangat Shashidharan, Sri Mangat Nateshan and Sri Vamanan Namboodori . After finishing her Masters in Literature , she started training in Hindustani classical music under the tutelage of Vidushi Alka Deo Marulkar in Poona . After three years of of intensive training , she got her big break in playback singing under the music direction of the great Ravindran master.
Her debut was a duet with Padmabhushan Sri K. J .Yesudas for the movie Arayannangalude Veedu. The song Deena Dayalo Rama went on to become a big hit . Very soon ,she got the chance to work with Maestro Ilayaraja for the movie Kochu kochu santoshangal . Gayatri became a unique presence in Malayalam film industry with her individual style of singing . She has recorded for eminent music directors of South like Vidyasagar , Ramesh Narayan , Johnson, Ouseppachan, Gopisundar ,Bijbal , Rahul raj , to name a few .
She has won many coveted awards including the Kerala Government state award for best playback singer in 2004 , Amrita film award , World Malayalee council award . Along with playback singing she has also pursued her classical career with dedication . She is a B high artist for AIR in Hindustani classical and regularly broadcasts from AIR Bangalore .
She has performed for many renowned sabhas all over the country and abroad . She has also judged many TV reality shows including Amrita super star. She is regular presence on TV with her Ghazal show Khayal and also music mojo in kappa tv where she dapples with experimental genres . Gayathri has five solo spiritual albums to her credit , for one of which she has composed the Bhajans. The album Sankirtan , Smaran , Vishuddhi , Anahata , Shivasahsranamam is widely popular all over the country and are available online . She has performed in the prestigious Shanghai world music festival in the fusion repertoire . She has done fusions shows with maestros like Ustad Fazal Qureshi , Shankar Mahadevan , Purbayan Chatterjee , Gino Banks and many others . Her solo Hindustani classical album was released by Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia in Bangalore under the banner of the prestigious sabha Gururao Deshpande sangeet sabha. Gayatri is presently training under the doyenne of Kirana gharana Pt.Vinayak Torvi . She is also trained in ghazal and tumri gayaki under Vidushi Shubha Joshi . Her new Ghazal album ‘Ghazal Gaze’ was launched by times music at Khazana Festival 2017. Its all available on online portals including iTunes. She has also performed in Uttar-Dakshin Jugalbandi Sangeetotsav festival arranged by Sangeet Natak Akademi, in March 2018.
Gayatri has also shared her knowledge and has a teaching experience of over a decade.

During the Pandemic, Gayatri had performed with Purbayan Chatterjee, Darshan Doshi, Aditya Srinivasan, Mahesh Raghvan had found "THE FIRST EVER VIRTUAL LIVE CONCERT WITHOUT LATENCY (all musicians are in sync)" with good sound quality and variety of genres. For the First time a set of Musicians in India have figured out how to play Virtually Live and In Sync without Latency with the Engineer Aditya Srinivasan along with the Purbayan Chatterjee on Sitar and Mahesh Raghavan on iPad have brought this technology.
Gayatri also collaborated with international musicians George Brooks, Pete Lockett and KunleAyo and had sung for a song Sukhino Bhavantu - Prayer for World Peace through World Music created by Purbayan Chatterjee. This song was launched by HCL music on their app on World Music Day.
Gayatri recently lent her voice in Sitar Maestro Purbayan Chatterjee New Star Studded Album UNBOUNDED-ABAAD. The song “Sukoon - Catharsis” and Nayi Shuruaat - New Beginnings sung by her showcases Scintillating performances from global masters including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Thana Alexa, Antonio Sanchez, Carmen Staaf, Gary Husband and many more.
