Fun Fact about Freckle from the comics: He was once trying to become a policeman, but washed out of the Academy because he was too... enthusiastic... on the shooting-range.
Fun fact about prohibition: it's pretty much singlehandedly responsible for organized crime in the US. In order to profit off of alcohol distribution, you need to run it like a business, and once gangs started doing that for alcohol, they started doing it for everything else, because it was a good model for profit in general.
@cam4636
Жыл бұрын
Yuuup. I mean there were criminal gangs before Prohibition, but it was the tipping point into a real, countrywide (and sometimes international) problem that lasted into the 1970's-80's and built the groundwork for modern gang violence. The "noble experiment" to end crime by removing alcohol ended up making crime much worse, and naturally the people who supported Prohibition doubled down and forced it to last much longer than any reasonable experiment should.

Funnily enough, Prohibition happened in Finland too. Before that there was a small alcoholism problem. After that there was a big alcoholism problem. Great job, government.

@@jamesricker3997A lot of mafia groups started off as basically community service organizations, because immigrant neighborhoods were often underserved by the government. Police wouldn’t bother there (except to harass the residents), firefighters took their dear sweet time helping people, etc. There was a need and the mafia/mob helped fill it. Of course, it quickly spun into something else, but it often started out as “someone needs to handle this stuff, and we can’t trust the cops, but we know Alberto down the street and he’s okay, so what if he charges us money for it?”

Crash course for anyone who doesn't know: Rocky - Young rum-runner and musician for Mitzi's Little Daisy Cafe speakeasy. A little nutty in the head. Freckle's cousin. Freckle - Always worried that his strict Catholic mum (Rocky’s aunt) will find out about all this rum-running, which Rocky dragged him into. Loves using a gun like a madman, but lacks confidence any other time. Ivy - Has a crush on Freckle. Also helps with rum-running. Was kind of 'adopted' by Mitzi and her husband Atlas. Strong-headed girl. - - - Mordecai - Hitman who has a history with The little Daisy Cafe. Used to work for Atlas. Now works for The Marigolds. Serafine & Nicodeme - Brother and sister. Cajuns. Rum-runners for rival business The Marigolds. - - - Mitzi - Owns and runs The Little Daisy Cafe and the secret speakeasy beneath it. Down on her luck since her husband Atlas was gunned down. Atlas - Mitzi's murdered husband. Questionable whether Mordecai was involved. Wick - Posh entrepreneur whom Mitzi is trying to 'get in with' for financial favour. Zib - Almost beat in mood. Musician at The Little Daisy Cafe speakeasy. Viktor - Barman and angry heavy. Protective of Ivy.

Thanks for the character rundown. I'm on my way to check out the comic immediately.
Serafine, with her curly hairdo, seems to be modeled after Josephine Baker, a famous dancer and singer from St. Louis, Missouri, of those times, also famous in Paris, France, and famously a black, exceedingly attractive, and bisexual woman. No wonder you noticed her.
Oh, sweetie, that French accent with the New Orleans drawl is going to do things to your belly.
Heh. The "pillar of the community, baron of industry" cat in the speakeasy is named Wick Sable, which explains why he was so concerned with reports of "dynamite" and "damaged machinery" -- it was his "Sable Stone & Quarry" property that the gang crashed into!
She's saying chère not sheriff, it's Louisiana so french is also spoken along with english ya know 😁 Hope this prevented any confusion

Well it takes place in St. Louis, Missouri, which is basically the cultural crossroads of the USA in the 1920's. Serafine and Nico are obviously Cajun, which are from the Deep South (Louisiana, parts of Texas, Mississippi, etc). The Cajun are descendents of Arcadians, who were exiled from Canada by the British, so they still speak some French. Zib is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which was a big part of the Prohibition because of it's close proximity to Chicago and the Great Lakes (the Great Lakes where a good way to get alcohol from Canada and Wisconsin's illegal distilleries in the north woods). He's also got a Polish last name, which Wisconsin had a lot of Polish, German and Italian immigrants. Mitzi also has a Southern accent. Viktor is clearly an immigrant from Slovakia (if I remember correctly). So yeah...
The comic is also definitely worth checking out. The art in it is simply gorgeous.

@@craftyard9217 yes, Victor and Morcedai worked together before Atlas's death. They did the "dirty work" for Lackadaisy. That's also why Victor said "I know well what you went through" (something along teh lines of that, lol) to Ivy.
Fun fact: that little soliloquy Rocky did at the start was ripped straight out of the comic, word for word. The chapter is called Lackadaisy dithyram.
actually, Freckle is a nickname! his real name is Calvin but the nickname's so widely used both in the story and by people referring to his character that that's why Freckle is the name shown in the credits
Viktor and Freckle have two things in common; liking Ivy and uncontrollable murderous rage. Otherwise they are polar opposites. The three of them have such beautiful chemistry together! Viktor is so angry because he has strong if misplaced "Dad" instincts and is overprotective of Ivy. The more he worries for her the more pissed-off at the world (and whoever she's with) he gets. She's the daughter-figure that no one (including himself) is good enough for in his eyes. The fact that she's sweet on Freckle pisses him off, partly because of jealousy but also because Ivy liking Freckle means he can't kill Freckle without hurting her, and he would NEVER hurt her. Freckle for his part is clueless. He doesn't even notice Viktor is glaring specifically at him, can't figure out that the glare is supposed to be threatening, and hasn't a clue that the glare has anything to do with him and Ivy. As far as Freckle can tell, pissed-off glaring is just Viktor's ground state. Freckle also doesn't know how to process being attracted to Ivy, which Ivy herself is finding frustrating. Considered in strictest sarcasm it's all very wholesome and healthy. Honestly if Viktor wants to communicate anything to Freckle by glaring, he has to be more obvious - like maybe he needs to give up glaring at all the people and things that aren't Freckle. But I don't think Viktor can do that.
Fun fact Rocky and Freckle are cousins, you can clearly hear the family resemblance when they laugh.
I saw the title on this and was like “what one? Cause… damn those are amazing voices…”

Mosco, Thank you for bringing this gem to my attention! I, too, am a long-time fan of animation, but somehow had missed the promos for this. The animation is amazing and the story has loads of potential. The part that really got me, though was I missed the opening part in which it was stated to take place in St. Louis during Prohibition. Given the Cajun/NOLA accents of some of the characters, I assumed New Orleans, but it was a great reminder that the MIssissippi River connects all the cities within its valley and in spite of my own misidentification of the locale, this really is accurate to St. Louis speakeasy culture. Memphis, TN would also have fit well. I look forward to more of this series!
A small thing to add to the prohibition era is that the consumption of alcohol was legal technically since there was a loophole with the passing of the 18 amendment (which only really stated the selling and manufacturing of alcohol was illegal.)
Wasn't expecting a reaction, let alone so soon. And the full reaction! This was a cherry on top of the cake that the Lackadaisy pilot was

AHH! I am so glad you did a reaction to this delight! I've been looking forward to it for so long, though I am WAY behind on reading the comic and need to pop back into it.
Mordecai doesn't necessarily know Rocky personally but he has a history with the lackadaisy speakeasy. He worked for them as an enforcer and was Victor's partner before Mitzi's husband died and the club declined. He then switched sides and went to marigold. Mordecai also has severe OCD which is why when he shoots he always has to symmetrically center himself before he takes a shot.
I was so excited when this came out! I've been a fan of the comic for years. I just found you when you started Gravity Falls, so it's cool to find out that you are learning about Lackadaisy too.
I hadn't read the comics in a long, long time, so seeing this animated was AMAZING. I wasn't sure if we were going to get the same story that's in the comic or new stories, but this is definitely how the comic started. I am right there with you for Serafines voice, gives me tingles down my spine.
A little bit of US history to explain the location and characters: Lackadaisy takes place in St. Louis, Missouri, which is basically the cultural crossroads of the USA in the 1920's. The first steel railroad bridge across the Mississippi River was built in St. Louis, Missouri, which was a feat for it's time because the river is so huge and wide. St. Louis became a transportation hub for transporting goods and people from the East coast to the West Coast. It's also about in the middle between North and South. In the North you have cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, etc. and the Great Lakes. Serafine and Nico are obviously Cajun, which are from the Deep South (Louisiana, parts of Texas, Mississippi, etc). The Cajun are descendents of Arcadians, who were exiled from Canada by the British, so they still speak some French. Zib is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which was a big part of the Prohibition because of it's close proximity to Chicago and the Great Lakes (the Great Lakes where a good way to get alcohol from Canada and Wisconsin's illegal distilleries in the north woods. Disappearing into the north woods was a good way to lose the cops). Zib has also got a Polish last name, which Wisconsin had a lot of Polish, German and Italian immigrants. Mitzi also has a Southern accent. Viktor is clearly an immigrant from Slovakia (if I remember correctly). So yeah. Very diverse and an interesting setting for 1920's America!
I LOVE wolf walkers! Not seen anyone bring it up in ages.... Now i have to go rewatch it, lol.
basically Prohibition was during the time when it became illegal to sell and buy alcohol, becoming an actual Amendment which is the highest law here in the US. you can still drink alcohol if you had it but there were very few places where you can get some besides Doctors (where they prescribed alcohol for 'illnesses') churches and other religious places, moonshiners who brewed homemade alcohol, and hidden bars/dens like what Lackadasiy is. because alcohol was illegal it helped crime families and mobs gain a lot of power.
That style of rough animation reminds me of some Disney films, like Jungle Book and Robin Hood; and, as someone who grew up and loved those films, it makes me enjoy it so much more.
