Gay Actors of Old Hollywood Who Had to Live in Secret
Ойын-сауық
Many Hollywood stars of yesteryear who were LGBTQ+ were forced to hide who they really were. In those days, if it was even rumored that you might not be straight, it could ruin your career permanently. And if it was ever confirmed that you weren’t straight, you were basically cooked.

Thankfully, society has come a long way since then, and being in the LGBTQ+ community is no longer thought of as a negative. In fact, the pendulum has perhaps swung the other way, where gay stars and other people in the LGBTQ+ world are celebrated and appreciated for their talent and positive effects on society. In this video, we’re taking a look at some of the prominent actors from the older days of Hollywood who were forced to live a secret double life.
While they were actually gay or bisexual, they felt as if they couldn’t be who they truly were, for fear that it would ruin their career. And while the town of Hollywood was a lot more liberal than the rest of the country, that didn’t mean these stars could come out publicly. For many, it was an open secret in town that they weren’t straight, but the general public had no idea. So join Facts Verse, as we present: Gay Actors of Old Hollywood Who Had to Live in Secret

I think it was much better when actors kept their personal lives to themselves.
You always do a Great Job at these, your honesty and clarity of the are well done...Thank You!
I'm not shocked that these celebrities kept there personal life a secret and I believe was the best choice even in the present era depending on your family situation it's still best to keep one's personal life a secret I don't think there will ever be an era where everyone as the human race will one hundred percent agree if it's ok or not to be of the LGBT group all anyone can do is just be yourself 😁

Hollywood should never be about morality or direction. This is a FACT. Keep it on the screen to entertain. We do not care about your opinions or life style.
No big deal I knew most of those people were gay. I didn’t care I wasn’t gonna marry them. I enjoy their talent that was the basic part of it for me. People should be able to live their lives as they choose without being ostracized.

You can add Burt Lancaster to the list. Although he married several woman and had lots of kids ( like Brando) he slept with lots of men, including B-list actor and self-confessed gay man, Earl Holliman. When Lancaster came to the UK in the 1960's he watched the singer, Vince Eager performing. He called him to his table and promised him a role in a forth-coming movie - IF he was prepared to go back with him to his hotel room. Eager, who was straight, declined the invitation, but pressed Lancaster about the proposition of a movie part. Lancaster replied angrily : "If you don't come back to the hotel with me, you ain't gonna get any movie role". Needless to say, Eager remained a pop star.

My mother and I loved watching the Merv Griffin show every night from the mid-1960s--80s. When Denny Terrio's story came out about Merv harassing and literally going after him - it shocked me. Then I met a female who worked at the studio who told me that Merv was gay. I remember that his "wife" stayed on the east coast - while his show moved to the west coast. I disagree. That’s just a token declaration. Judging one’s favorite stars, i.e. public figures, by their personal lives is basic human nature, totally predictable
There was no "transgender" until John Money's theory and the famous Christine Jorgensen. Maybe cross dressers and female impersonators...
I have no problems with actors who are gay. Their personal lives were no concern of anyone. I knew about Rock Hudson but I still enjoyed many of his films. However, I never really rated Randolph Scott or Cary Grant as actors. I saw them as lightweight actors, even though Scott appeared mostly in westerns.
The one that shocked me the most and wasn’t mentioned in the clip was my favorite actor, Marlon Brando, who said the love of his life was Wally Cox! That shocked me more than Brando being gay! WALLY COX? Seriously!

In '71, there was a big scandal about Rock Hudson & Jim Nabors.
My mother and her 6 brothers had gay friends back in the day! They didn’t live in secret! 😎😎
As a Los Angelean, I knew about all these people, as I think millions of others also did. We didn't (or at least I didn't) let it affect patronage of their films. One portrayal by Rock Hudson was especially amusing if one knew he was gay. In a movie with Doris Day, (I think it was "Pillow Talk") he played the role of a straight man pretending to be gay. Interesting that Anthony Perkins, Tab Hunter, Richard Chamberlain, Charles Laughton and numerous lesbian actresses weren't mentioned. And there were people who denied it but "everybody" knew: Paul Lynde, Liberace, etc.
There is three or four of the stars that I didn't know that were in the video, but at that time they did what they thought was right for them. But I agree with them for what they did, they are still star's.
Actors can be who and what they are by they mean it's there way of privately living does not matter who you are leave there private life
What I love is now there is a book out that showed the actor who played in the tv series The Rebel was lovers with Elvis . They both were bisexual but the Colonel knew about it and stated that at least Elvis was not getting girls pregnant . The book is called THE REBEL AND THE KING .

Wow I didn't know about Merve Griffin or Ceasar Romero the one that really blew me away was when I had heard Raymond Burr was gay.
I already knew everything.....The only ( sad) surprise has been Cary Grant 😢
Cary Grant and many others were bisexual. They may have been more one or the other at times, but he wasn't just gay. In fact he saw a psychiatrist. I try not to imagine him and Randolph Scott, the original scout in Last of the Mohicans, if I recall correctly. I lived for morning matinees at 6. I was often late for school. Mom left at 7:30am. I was supposed to leave at 7:40. But those old films about history pulled me back. Sometimes I was "sick." And I loved THE DUKE. Sands of Iwo Jima, Yellow Ribbon, even The Green Beret, which made me angry at the near end.
If these stars revealed their sexuality, it would be career suicide. Why should the public care about who they sleep with? They deserve a private life as well as anyone. I guess it comes with the territory.
Cary Grant wasn't Gay then He was bi sexual that's different as you say.

I understand it. I do think it was not possible to live openly in 1940s to? But if a fan is crazy over a male idol, the letdown of many might affect his career. I don't know how men think of lesbians. It too could be off-putting.
I remember the suit with merv and Danny no one believe him because after he got fired then he claim sexual harassment

There's bucket loads of evidence that Grant was not straight. First there's the relationship with Randolph Scott - longer than all but the last of Grant's five marriages, and confirmed to by multiple reputable house guests who stayed with the couple and attested to them being lovers. Then there's Grant's prior relationship (before his Hollywood years) with Australian designer Orry-Kelly, who lived with CG in New York and wrote about it in his memoir, only recently uncovered (and the subject of a documentary, Women He Undressed). BTW, at this time CG was mostly getting by as a "gigolo", if not an actual rent boy - relying on "the kindness of strangers" - male strangers. There's also the testimony of Scotty Bowers, the Hollywood pimp who apparently arranged gay assignations for Grant. The latter might be easily dismissed as suspect if it weren't for the fact that most of Bower's other tales of Hollywood's "secret" gays have been independently verified. Additionally, at least one of Grant's early marriages was a publicity stunt, ordered by the studio to quash the gay rumours. And it's fairly likely two other early marriages were similarly motivated. None of them lasted much more than a year; all of them were suspect in several ways.
Sad they had to hide.

Many years ago, I was at CBS in Hollywood and when I walked into the parking lot - there was Jim Nabors. Very friendly and spoke with his real voice.

As a little girl when I first saw Jim Neighbors on Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle, I knew there was something very different about him than other male actors I knew, but I didn’t know what it was. But some of the other males identified here I had no idea about. I really don’t want to know their personal life. If I know someone is gay it is hard for me to believe male female romance storylines.
