Great video! just installed mine Christmas eve. It started leaking the day before after 28 years in service. Took me 4 hours for removal, and an extra trip back for another part and installation. I'm not very confident in my plumbing skills, but this video made it straight forward and fairly easy.

Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Codes have changed in the past years. One thing not mentioned is the size of the flue pipe. In some cases for example a 40 gallon gas fired atmospheric (Chimney) draft, water heater with a flue pipe size, was 3" as shown in the video. Most states the size has changed to 4". The water heaters manufactured now, have what is called a "closed combustion chamber". Meaning where the pilot and burner assemblies are, is sealed. That is why there is a spark ignition for the pilot. There are circumstances that still allow 3", but that is an important fact that should have been mentioned, as to specifically check in your area, and circumstance. Due to the potential for Carbon Monoxide to "back draft" into the living space.

Thanks lowes to share the secrecy behind the heater installation. Shut off the whole house water by turn off the switch outside house, which is more secure to use to avoid your in-house valve broken because long time set in rest. Most house has cold water cross-flow to hot pipe issue. So Turnoff whole house cold water will prevent the hot water pipe keeps running off water after turnoff the heater cold water valve.

Great video! I just learned that most water heaters manufactured after April 2015 are wider (and more expensive) than previous models due to gov regulations requiring them to be more energy efficient. You may need a larger stand or drain pan to accommodate. If your water heater is in a tight space, many of the newer models may not even fit.

@@JP1050x they are referring to the new heaters being wider than the older heaters. So when you have an older in a really tight closet or space, then the new heater with the same capacity might not fit. You'll have to downsize and probably add a mixing valve if needed.

Just bought an AO Smith Signature Select (Extended Warranty) gas heater. I see no comment in the paper instructions regarding leveling the water heater. I have always seen this in all appliance installations and wondered why it is absent now. The installer of our old heater did a cock-eyed job and I was not present to watch him. He told my wife he installed it crooked because "The plumbing was the limiting factor in his effort." I just figured he wanted to put as little into the job as possible and beat it. SO, now I am doing this job myself 10 years later. Level installations for gas are always important?

A year or more late but to answer your question. If the unit is a gas powered heater you need "make up" air for the fire that heats up the water. If you dont have enough air flow you can get improper combustion which can be detrimental to your health. And electric unit does not need make up air and can be put almost anywhere.

Lowe's Home Improvement Thank you for the well-informed response! I did some follow up reading and you are absolutely correct. It appears as though my home inspector conflated the terms "sediment trap" and "drip leg," and that these are commonly confused terms. Still, it seems like sediment traps are to be installed at the entry point of gas into water heaters, furnaces, and boilers for the reason you mentioned. It would have been nice if the video mentioned it, but it's still a great video that I'll refer to in the future! Thumbs up for the great online customer service at Lowe's!

There is a "drip leg", / sediment trap. The drip leg/sediment trap is installed at the bottom of the vertical pipe. In the video, there is a Tee fitting at the bottom of the vertical pipe, the "Bull" (side) of the Tee going to the gas valve, then a short nipple and cap, on the bottom. Obviously due to any moisture, or sediment which will fall into the drip leg, or sediment trap. Whether there is "dry gas" in the area or not, the International Mechanical Code , and the National Fuel Gas Code books, require it !

Don't forget to remove the crappy plastic drain valve on the bottom of your new water heater and replace is with a high quality brass valve and nipple to space it out a bit. A water heater should be drained bi-annually to keep the sediment from building up, and those plastic drain valves don't last.

Wallace: Bullshit. After buying the proper replacement tank from a home center and in most cases $30-worth of flex-lines/gas supply line/proper thread-sealant, the rest is lefty-loosey/righty-tighty + close-valve/open-valve for anyone with half a brain. Tank doesn't work after? You re-check your install, and worst-case scenario return the tank for a replacement if faulty.

If something like a dryer or a return air vent from the Hvac is too close to the vent of the waterheater that appliance could be pulling it's air so strongly that it pulls the from the waterheater exhaust. To prevent this and outside air vent can be added near the appliance that is hogging the air. The solution at my house was to undercut the bottom of the laundry room door that sealed off the outside air so that fresh air from the house would be pulled to the the laundry to replace the air being exhausted by the dryer.

If you do not drown or blow yourself... or anyone else up, what they won't know can't hurt you! The main thing that kills most people though is the carbon monoxide gas leaks when they have defective venting. You can smell natural gas and you can also use water and dish soap to make leaks bubble. Much cheaper and already will have on hand. The part no one likes is hauling a new one in and hauling/disposing of the old one. Especially the disposal.

A gas leak from appliances are not safe to have in your home! Gas leakage could increase the risk of fire or worse, possibly an explosion. The gas is not safe to breathe in either, the stuff is poisonous... Please be extremely careful with gas fireplaces, air conditioning, boilers, ovens/stoves, etc. Also, do not forget to reinstall the aerator! it can act like a semi-filter to keep debris out of your drinking water that comes out of the faucet! It will allow to let the water run smoothly too! You do not want to end up in a messy situation! Other than that, good video!
