4:38 "so i went ahead and built this model to show you how to properly install vents in your attic" Wow. A+. Thanks for the excellent video.
This guy makes it look so easy. Somebody needs to do a video of this V.S. reality, where you can expect a bunch of cussing and objects being thrown lol.

way more info than I expected. This is the clearest video I've seen in a long time. Exceptional job!
Hey great video! I followed it to replace the very old fan / light / heater in my bathroom with a Broan 655, with no attic access, but with existing wiring and ductwork. If you can possibly get into the attic, I would recommend that and installing the unit from above. Some things I found: Obviously mark both sides of all wire connections before undoing the wire nuts on the old unit. On the new Broan you have to disassemble the unit before you install it, then reassemble it in the ceiling so take pictures / remember how the thing came apart cuz its not obvious where things go when you go to put it together. I carefully cut out the existing metal brackets with a sawzall and framed in 2x4's between the joists to screw the sides of the new Broan unit to. Remember you have to have a big notch in your framed rough opening to allow the house wiring that goes in through the side of the Broan unit to pass through the rough opening when inserting the unit from below. In addition to the snaps and hose clamp provided, I would use aluminum tape to seal the duct hose to the unit as this junction is really leaky without it. Its hard to get the house wiring fished in through the knock out in the side of the unit because it has to make an immediate 90 degree turn so obviously bend this turn into the house wiring before trying to insert it into the unit. All in all the job was tougher than I was expecting for a home owner (me) and I probably would have hired someone to do it knowing that. it took about 3 1/2 hours mostly working with my hands over my head so if you have neck, shoulder or other problems I would say hire someone to do it.
Yea ima just pay someone knowing me id end up spending my entire saturday while the wife aks every 30min if im almost done.

I like this video. Very easy to understand. I have replaced and installed 8 ceiling fans. These take patients and determination. One fan I replaced had two dead mice in it. Prepare yourself for anything when you take down the old fan. Wear safety glasses. Rubber Gloves. Pray.

Our house was built in the 90s with the exhaust venting into the attic. The fan part was no problem. The roof work was something I never would have attempted without this video. Thank you! It took all day, due to two trips to the hardware store and the problem with a crawl space of an attic, but it saved a heap of money.
THANK YOU so much for your easy and super clear video it helped me feel empowered to replace my broken bathroom vent myself . I went so great and it feels so good to have repaired it myself. THANK YOU

First I thought I'd fix my fans bearing, then I realized that the fan was toast . So I thought new fan, then I discovered it was directly wired to electrical not plugged in. I then noticed the duct work wasn't secured to the fan housing, off to the attic where I discovered the duct travelled 1 foot horizontally releasing into insulation and an unvented attic. I love home repair.

Thank you for this really informative video. My fan is so noisy that I can’t stand another day with it. I’m 62 and I’m not afraid to try it. I have done other electrical work, and it’s not as hard as you think. You’ll feel good when you do it yourself, only if you feel that you can.
I just replaced mine. I did it the easy way. All I had to do was buy a new motor and fan that matched the one I had. A couple screws and unplugged the old motor, then just reversed for the new one. Took less time than this video. He’s showing you how to replace the whole housing and how to mount, the whole 9. If you can buy a new motor and fan just do that. No need to mess with electricity, it’s plug and play

When buying a new fan (0:10), don't you also have to check the duct size? What if you have a 3" duct and you buy a fan for a 4" duct? I'm sure there are lots of other details that could be covered for specific cases, but this video does a helpful job of covering the basics!

Thnx. for the video. One question though. What difference would it make, should one just screw down the exhaust part right on to the top of the shingles, and seal it? This would avoid cutting away the shingles. I cant see it leaking if it gets sealed properly, screws and all.

A lot of newer fans are so quiet you can’t even hear them. Some of them have a little light so you can tell if it’s on or not.
Thank you for the video. I have an issue with a small bathroom's exhaust fan, as it leaks water and makes ugly water marks on my bathroom ceiling. I looked at on top of the roof and couldn't find out vent. I figured out that it doesn't have one or it might be on the Attic. The space to reached Attic is very small. I am afraid that it might cost me a lot of money to fixed the problem. Please provide me with some suggestions. I am older and I am in no way a handy person.
This is so easy. I'm going to pay someone while I watch Netflix. 😊🎉

7:22 you should probably put some insulation over the top of that fan also. And, in addition to that, if you buy some really fancy fan, some of them aren't "contact rated" with insulation, so, the only way to insulate those is to build a box or something around them.

Am I the only person who prefer loud exhaust fans? Exhaust fans in bathrooms have always been loud in every house I grow up in and in every house I have lived including the current home I own.
Great video with simple, easy to understand straightforward explanations. Is that ok that the placement of the duct's end in the outside wall is higher than the fan itself? Will not the condensed water stay in the duct that way? I already have a 4” duct connected to the kitchen fan and it is running about 10” above the place where I’m planning to install the bathroom fan. Can I connect bathroom fan to that duct? Thank you.
@Isis-wm4po
Жыл бұрын
Don't forget to get your duct at a length where you can allow the water to pool at a spot that is not your fan (i.e. the electrical), and I would recommend to everyone to check what you have done after you have been using it. I look at my seals, seams, and all about once a month for everything. You never know when a small mistake overlooked when installed will cause a great problem down the road. Better to fix it before it causes a greater issue. The water pooling in the duct will be easier to repair than one that allows water that may come in to run all the way to the fan. Be it electrical or where you have it secured, you want to inspect it regularly.

How is it that when ducted out the soffit that the air comes right back in? The force of the fan is blowing it out no? In NZ and Australia 95% of kitchen or bathroom fans vent out the soffit not causing any mould issues
Aside from the fan and the duct, shouldn't you also install a backdraft damper?
