Gas Spring RV Bed Lift Install - RV Upgrades

I show you how I installed an RV bed lift kit into my RV step by step. It didn't come with one and we access the under-bed storage so often that a bed lift kit was must for us!

Many RV's come with gas springs that assist in lifting the bed to access under the bed storage; ours however, did not. Our new mattress is ridiculously heavy and we lift it our bed so often to get to various things under it that not having gas springs to help is unacceptable. So we did something about it.

you could always put a locking gadget on the bed to stop it from bouncing up and down while driving. or even pieces of foam stapled.

I enjoyed the video very much. I predrilled the 4 holes on the blocks, mounted the brackets with 2 screws and cut 2x4s to beef up where the bottom brackets mount. I did all of this before the main install. You saved me some time!

Great videos you two! I moved into my Freedom Express Ultra Lite 192 RSB and your videos are so helpful because your camper is pretty much the same layout as mine. On your solar video I noticed I have the same panel above my fridge and same access to behind my breaker panel too! Very helpful to those of us in the RV community. Thank you both.

If the bounce of the bed becomes an issue; consider a strap secured to the bottom of the plywood/osb board and connected to the side of the box to secure it. Good job guys.

I have a 2018 Kodiak 23’ hitch trailer, I have been a few upgrades, three weeks ago we purchased a queen size 12” memory foam mattress. Well guess what happen, yep bed too heavy to lift well I could but the wife couldn’t, sooo

I remember owing travel trailers that were built that light weight that I had to reinforce the bed box too for the lift kit. Then I cut a piece of plywood as a center divider in the compartment below to keep the platform for the bed from sagging in the middle. The divider was handy as it broke up that huge space under the bed in to two storage areas. If you have any problems with the OSB board starting to snag the mattress, use it for firewood and replace it with good quality plywood sanded on one side, much stronger and and easier on the bottom of the mattress.

+Brian Kathy Thanks Brian! We thought about that but ended up not needing it once all the bedsheets are all on. It doesn't bounce at all and never opens on its own. If we didnt have such a thick heavy comforter we probably would need a hasp or latch, or just adjust the angle of the gas springs so they have less leverage

  • @theones261

I agree for the hasp that can secure it in place, or otherwise it will suddenly open if it bounce while making out and you get thrown out of bed.

How thick is that OSB? My bed has what looks like 1/4 inch plywood and Im deciding how thick the replacement wood needs to be so I can install these lifts. I was thinking about going with 7/16 OSB but Im not sure if that will be too heavy. I have a 27 ft trailer but it only has an 1800 lb cargo capacity.

I saw your issue with the programmable door lock. Your door is too thin for the lockset. Just purchase a piece of sheet rubber 1/8" and problem solved. The screw loosening in the lockset at striker plate can be fixed by adding Green (Removeable) Locktite. Or if screw is stripped Just re-tap to next larger size. Don't forget the locktite. Great teamwork very enjoyable videos.Alan.

That company only gave me one piece of wood which for that much money should have had both pieces! Our bed is side ways. It gives us the whole underneath for storage, which hopefully will be nice. Thanks for showing your mistakes because that helps us. We appreciate it so much!! Shalom!!

Very nice upgrade, however, the struts were mounted in the wrong direction. If installed properly, the lid will not try to open when closed, even without any weight (bed) on top of it. And when opening it, after about 20% opened, it will lift the lid on its own. This is how a strut should work.
