Gas Spring RV Bed Lift Install - RV Upgrades
I show you how I installed an RV bed lift kit into my RV step by step. It didn't come with one and we access the under-bed storage so often that a bed lift kit was must for us!

Many RV's come with gas springs that assist in lifting the bed to access under the bed storage; ours however, did not. Our new mattress is ridiculously heavy and we lift it our bed so often to get to various things under it that not having gas springs to help is unacceptable. So we did something about it.

Good job on the DIY bed lift. Good information for those of us that will install bed lift struts.
you could always put a locking gadget on the bed to stop it from bouncing up and down while driving. or even pieces of foam stapled.
Did this to my trailer today. Huge difference
I enjoyed the video very much. I predrilled the 4 holes on the blocks, mounted the brackets with 2 screws and cut 2x4s to beef up where the bottom brackets mount. I did all of this before the main install. You saved me some time!
Very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for doing this.
Great videos you two! I moved into my Freedom Express Ultra Lite 192 RSB and your videos are so helpful because your camper is pretty much the same layout as mine. On your solar video I noticed I have the same panel above my fridge and same access to behind my breaker panel too! Very helpful to those of us in the RV community. Thank you both.
Great instruction. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the awesome DIY video... appreciate all the do's and adjustments that you went through!! Thanks to both of you!!👍👍
Thanks. Very Helpful. Good job.
Our camper, thankfully, came with these already! If not, would definitely have them installed!
Great upgrade. I didn't know they made those!
I just got my kit! Your video inspires me thank you. The only thing I will do differently is put washers on the bolt heads to keep the force from pulling thru the fiber board. You may want to do that as well. Great video!
Oh Yeah, I'm adding this feature to our bed, also.
Thank you for the demo. I might add an easy grab handle at the bottom. We put a handle on one of our RV beds and made the lift so much easier.
I love instructional videos. That's Labor: four hours; Functional storage: priceless!
Another great video, this is on our upgrades list for our bed eventually. 👍
You gave me some ideas..tks..
Good job... the mattress upgrade is also a great improvement. 👍

Riding With the oldies Thank you! David did an amazing job and the springs are working great! We're so happy we switched to this mattress too, it's very comfortable and we don't hurt in the morning anymore lol
Good Job and well explained. The music is nice too. Thanks for the info. I will be doing this upgrade to my camper as well.

+S Vigil Thanks I'm glad the video was helpful! It is so nice having gas springs lifting the bed for you, especially if your bed is heavy and you're accessing the storage under it multiple times a day. Definitely worth it!
Great video. Thank you

You're welcome! Glad you liked it :D
We have the exact same RV. 😁 It helped a lot watching this video since we did this to our bed today. We get our new mattress Wednesday, so that will be the test.
Great info. Just bought my very first ‘used’ traveler and the bed is impossible for me to open! This is very help so maybe my son or grandson could put these in for me! I still need a new mattress too.... thanks again!!!! 🤗
If the bounce of the bed becomes an issue; consider a strap secured to the bottom of the plywood/osb board and connected to the side of the box to secure it. Good job guys.
Yep, definitely getting this! Just found yalls channel a few days ago and yall are doing great! All your videos are very good and I might add Im very jealous of the difference in what you're doing vs what Im doing (working hundreds of hours of overtime per year) lol! I love RVing though and yall have inspired me to use ours more and I just reserved a spot near the beach for the entire summer and will be going hopefully every weekend! Keep up the great videos and I hope yall can keep on travelling as long as you want!
Love the Pokémon!!!!!!
Great work, you can add some kind of lock or a velcro tape to secure the top once it is closed.
I love this channel
Nice video. I actually like the fact that you left the fact that the 1st holes for the bottom bracket was drilled too high and you just adjusted it.👍
A carpenters tip for you - to center drill those brackets use a Vix bit. You hold the bracket where you want and drill the holes - centered exactly where ya need them . Check them out.
Butters is cute!
dope stuffed animal collection!
Hi guys I’ve been watching Your channel for about a month so far, you guys have a lot of great ideals and probably the same as everyone has, the big difference I see is that you don’t just think about it you get er done. I have a 2018 Kodiak 23’ hitch trailer, I have been a few upgrades, three weeks ago we purchased a queen size 12” memory foam mattress. Well guess what happen, yep bed too heavy to lift well I could but the wife couldn’t, sooo

Sorry about that I fat fingered my key pad. Any way soo I was watching your video and I did the same thing you did, install the lift kit, it works great. Thanks the insight. I in the process of getting my trailer for boon-docking too.
I remember owing travel trailers that were built that light weight that I had to reinforce the bed box too for the lift kit. Then I cut a piece of plywood as a center divider in the compartment below to keep the platform for the bed from sagging in the middle. The divider was handy as it broke up that huge space under the bed in to two storage areas. If you have any problems with the OSB board starting to snag the mattress, use it for firewood and replace it with good quality plywood sanded on one side, much stronger and and easier on the bottom of the mattress.

What mattress did you upgrade to? Happy with it? Thanks!
Could you tell me an approximate weight for your mattress? My wife and I bought one from Overstock as well that looks similar to that one. It is heavy and I worried about using the small or standard lift and wondered if I might need the large or heavy ones but maybe not!
Thank you. I am a fan of your videos. What is the weight of the lid? I have a poplar wooden box built in my truck and need the lift kit 27 is the length from FRONT to back 23 is the width from side to side The top lid is 12 lbs Thank you ML
The last thing you wanna do when drilling in the bed is to split your wood
good job. customizing your house is only hard if your afraid to try.
Nice video.. A small hasp fitted to the end of your bed, would solve the problem of bouncing and also give you a secure storage option.

+Brian Kathy Thanks Brian! We thought about that but ended up not needing it once all the bedsheets are all on. It doesn't bounce at all and never opens on its own. If we didnt have such a thick heavy comforter we probably would need a hasp or latch, or just adjust the angle of the gas springs so they have less leverage
@theones261

I agree for the hasp that can secure it in place, or otherwise it will suddenly open if it bounce while making out and you get thrown out of bed.
If you had have sawn the 2x4 from the other side, you could have supported the cut off piece with your left hand= cleaner cut :-)
What kind of mattress did you get ? I dont see a link!
Am I correct in assuming that the first endpoint you installed was half way along the opening and the point on the top was determined by the extended length of the gas spring?
Question for David: The bed lift kit was on back order. I am looking at a couple of different gas lifts. Are the gas shocks 15” and 90 lbs per shock or 90 lbs total? Any advice greatly appreciated
Great upgrade, both the mattress & the bed lift. How is the bed lift holding up?
@FateUnbound

Its been two years and the bedlift is doing great. We love it
How do you know what size lift kit to get ? Does it go by weight of the mattress or is there another way to figure it out? I will be needing to change mine out as the mattress I bought is very heavy. Any info you can supply will be helpful. Thanks
great job on the install but that is quite the over engineered bracket system... the gas shocks i have been using for years in the same situation have two #8 screws top and bottom on 70lb shocks.. works a treat(lifting a little more than yours do as our bed is the other way)
Thank you so much for this info video. I have just installed a bed lift kit and could not have done it without your help. Literally watched the video and copied you step for step. It was so easy to follow and now I have a working bed lift kit installed and working. Thanks again.

That's awesome! I'm so glad my video and instructions were so helpful 😁
How thick is that OSB? My bed has what looks like 1/4 inch plywood and Im deciding how thick the replacement wood needs to be so I can install these lifts. I was thinking about going with 7/16 OSB but Im not sure if that will be too heavy. I have a 27 ft trailer but it only has an 1800 lb cargo capacity.
I saw your issue with the programmable door lock. Your door is too thin for the lockset. Just purchase a piece of sheet rubber 1/8" and problem solved. The screw loosening in the lockset at striker plate can be fixed by adding Green (Removeable) Locktite. Or if screw is stripped Just re-tap to next larger size. Don't forget the locktite. Great teamwork very enjoyable videos.Alan.
do you have an updated link for your supports link above?
Just joking but you could get rid of the animals! LOL 😂 We just got ours also. We got the king size n already reinforced our sides with boards but haven’t installed the lift kit yet. That company only gave me one piece of wood which for that much money should have had both pieces! Our bed is side ways. It gives us the whole underneath for storage, which hopefully will be nice. Thanks for showing your mistakes because that helps us. We appreciate it so much!! Shalom!!
Jen looks great but Dave, those shorts!
What hinges did you use?
Dang! I haven't been able to fold myself up like that since I was 12 years old.
I suggest to any one who is going to do this, instead of eye balling it, use a tape measure, which also keeps fittings square. Certainly end result was achieved, making lifting easier.
What mattress did you get?
lock down latch for traveling.....or securing better...
Just a quick note: for those who do not have a family member with a shop and tools... Lowes and Home Depot will cut the wood to the specified size ($0.60 a cut) for you when buying 2X4 et. al.
Even with the mattress off of it mine doesn’t open unless I pull it up. Maybe re position the struts.
My queen bed is on a slideout and the storage box underneath is fixed and does not slide with the bed board on top. Anyone figured out how to make the bottom strut connection slide horizontally when you put the slide out?
Nice modification! Maybe I missed it somewhere but... where did you guys source that mattress from? Is it an RV short queen? Me and the wife may be looking to upgrade ours.

+Lenny Jonas Thanks! We got our mattress from Overstock.com for $380 and it has served us pretty well so far. It's pretty comfortable too, especially at that price point. Yep it's an RV short queen. If you're still sleeping on the factory mattress then DEFINITELY upgrade to one like this, you will not regret it. Here is the link to the mattress we got www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/NuForm-11-inch-RV-Short-Queen-size-Memory-Foam-Mattres/8671963/product.html

@@FateUnbound We ordered A queen mattress from Texas Mattress Makers in Houston, Texas . It's as nice as our in home mattress! It will be here soon! Can't wait to take a trip and be able to try it out.
Very nice upgrade, however, the struts were mounted in the wrong direction. If installed properly, the lid will not try to open when closed, even without any weight (bed) on top of it. And when opening it, after about 20% opened, it will lift the lid on its own. This is how a strut should work.
@DrunknOdin

I agree but it seems as though everyone's stay open. Any suggestion on how to adjust this? Does anyone's stay close without weight on top.
Bouncy bed? Easy fix with a couple eye hooks and a small bungie cord or other creative fasteners... Even a little Velcro could end the bouncy bed dilemma.. Yeah, it's one more step to opening your storage compartment but, I think it just may be worth it.
Good improvement. But bet you would have had Madonna arms in a few months from lifting it all the time. =)

If it won't stay down while driving, put a simple hook latch on it.

Luckily our bed is heavy enough with all the bed sheets on it that it stays down even while driving down the road. If it didn't though we were going to get a hook latch

love you guys but cat food under my bed, wow! big nooooooooo way. carpets and food do not go well
You look like you haven’t done much diy. You could have left the blocks and drilled the screw holes from the bottom and put your screws in from the top
@FateUnbound

This is how the bedlift kit manufacturer recommends you do it, and after 7 years of daily use it still works perfectly without issues 👌
Didn't show how the socket of the spring lift was fit into the brace. It looked like he was using a wrench. Not helpful.
@rickl6697
5 жыл бұрын
They basically just snap on. No wrench needed. To take them off the ball, you push a small screw driver under the spring that clips onto the ball and pry it up slightly.
The outgassing from OSB board is really horrible. Way too much formaldehyde for a small enclosed space such as yours. Very unhealthful!!!
