With Democrats in office and their utopian dreams of renewable energy and EV's we all know where gas prices and especially taxes on gas are going. And this technology isn't there yet on realistic range for trucks. Best to plan for the future.

    It is amazing how short our memory can be. A little more than a decade ago when gas topped $4.00 a gallon many people traded in their guzzlers for something more efficient. I remember rental car companies offering upgrades to your rental for free to a big suv, but most people requested something more economical. Once prices dropped below $3.00 a gallon the demand for thirsty vehicles again rose. I wish diesel was still a viable option until electrification becomes a truly possible reality for all. It seems that we have regulated it out of existence a bit too soon.

    Avg national gas price as of 3/08/22 = $4.17. $100000 vehicle = 23,980 gallons of gas. 4wd Truck getting 12mpg = 287,760 miles. I'll take driving 287k miles over getting better mpg lol.

  • @giobikefans

    @giobikefans

    2 жыл бұрын

    To start I agree that I agree with your sentiment that the savings is not there, but I think there are a few other things to consider. This works if you are keeping your current vehicle and expect it to get 287k miles. It will always be cheaper to keep your vehicle than buying a new one until about 200,000 miles when the cost of an engine rebuild or crate motor and all the other parts wearing out becomes too expensive and it is sent to the junkyard. So let’s say you buy a new vehicle and expect to get 200,000 miles out of it. And say you get a cheaper pickup at $40,000 which is a steal in todays inflated market. Trucks now get at least 20 mpg. So at $4 a gallon how much do you spend in 200,000 miles at 20mpg? $40,000. So at about $6 a gallon it probably reaches parity. But that’s just parity, not counting the cost of electricity, the cost of your time at a charging station, you don’t actually save anything and you have the inconveniences of driving electric. But here’s the biggest difference. I can always drive less and lower the cost of the ICE vehicle. It’s like a pay as you go phone plan. I guess if you have to put on a lot of miles every year for work the math and convenience probably makes sense at $8 a gallon, assuming electric vehicle prices stay the same (which they won’t). But at $8 a gallon people aren’t going to buy an EV, they’re going to start going bankrupt.

    @@giobikefans very well put! I got extremely lucky and paid $40k for my used 2014 F-150 SVT 6.2L with 50k miles, and that included the $13k in suspension added. I really only ever drive to go off-road where I'll usually average 12mpg in dirt/sand. The 6.2L can get up to 400k miles and still only needed the top end rebuilt, and that was on a work vehicle. The PHEV's on this list are no good for overlanding. They are too heavy, and have terrible payloads! Also the mileages are based on plugging in every night. If you're living off the grid you will get 16 mpg not 42. I believe they require high test gas too. A serious consideration should be an F-150 with the "flex fuel" 5.0L ♡8. Today E-85 is $2.99 in California. That means a tank of E-85 fuel (109 octane) in my truck is $68.77 there, while a tank of low test 87 gas here at home in Canada is currently $169.65. So it is literally cheaper to go overlanding in California then it is to stay home! It is roughly the same price per mile to drive my 5.0L in California as it is to drive a Yaris here in Canada! 🇨🇦

    Range Rover, Hummer EV on this list? The MSRP doesn’t quite equal the savings at the pump…Here’s 2 for the list: jeep (non-grand) Cherokee trailhawk, Bronco sport…disappointing video from you guys.

    Interesting how you always see the same comments that diesel is more at the pump, but no one seems to care that that diesel goes 10 mile further then there gas counterpart on a gallon. My Rebel diesel gets 22-24 city and 26-28 hwy.

    The higher initial cost of a diesel engine plus the additional maintenance cost of operating a diesel. You have to drive somewhere around 30k miles or something per year to offset the cost vs mpg savings

    I have found my diesel is very close to a gasser to operate. I can go 14 to 15 thousand miles on oil change, were my 5.7 only went 6 to 7 thousand. You will pay 3k for an ipad for your radio and controls but say oh it's to much to spend that on a diesel. Then you will spend 25 hundred for electric assist on the engine. But 4k for a diesel. Oh and def gee 12 bucks every 15 to 18 thousand. So keep thinking your saving so much money. I'll take the 10 miles more a gallon.

    @@fredv7487 How much did your rebel eco diesel cost and how much did your 5.7 cost. And no one else said anything about 3k radios or 2500 electric assists. The point I was originally making was that a diesel engine costs more than a gas engine and a diesel mechanic charges more than a gas mechanic, generally speaking.

    @@acuchessi Msrp for our 21 rebel was 68K. We walked out the door including tax and tag for 60k. Only things missing was the large screen and a trailer brake controller. Seems to me most of the mechanics are charging $100 bucks an hour. My point is that most people will will spend what ever for some option with bluetooth. But just say the add price of the diesel is to much. In all honesty the diesel has cost the same to operate as our 19 Rebel if not less. And with a 33 gallon tank we have a range of over 700 miles with 33's and a 3.92 rear axle 4x4.

    That’s not the place for EVs. I hope people carry a generator, extra gas, a tent, and a sleeping bag. Cause they’re screwed if they run out of juice. It’s just going to be a long time before this happens. We simply don’t have the electrical grid or infrastructure to support these vehicles. Just look at all the rolling blackouts they already have in California.

    While I agree that the national grid will have to change accordingly, CA rolling blackouts were for two days and impacted a small portion of the population during a historical heat storm that impacted the whole west coast. But it sure exposed the intermittent nature of renewables and lack of storage during such unusual events.
