Very nice in-depth and honest review. If smoke flavor and remote temperature control is a priority, maybe a pellet grill would be best. If quick cooking time is a priority, maybe the gas grill. If you have the space, budget and "dedication" , having both types may be better. I have been using our Weber GII E-335 natural gas BBQ for one year and really like it. I wouldn't like it nearly as much if it required replacing propane bottles. I recently gave it it's first basic cleaning, just scraping the grates, removable parts, and lower box contents into the drip tray, and quick exterior cleaning, took me about 15 minutes, very little mess. I noticed that the pellet grill required 110vac. The gas grill needs 110vac only when using the rotisserie motor. I am a little leery of using phone apps and longevity of complex electronic/electro-mechanical devices that depend on internet/wifi routers or bluetooth. Recently had to replace my router, uninstall router software and reconnect to PC, Epson printer, tablets and cell phones (PITA).

So I have a Weber spirit 3 e310 and I've been inspired by your videos to try smoking on my gas grill. I'm also in the process of putting together a network monitor for the iGrill 3! Goal is to be able to monitor temp on my home network via a connection to raspberry pi, and I might write a custom phone app to go along with it. I think with a little tinkering I can solve the temp monitoring issue.

Yeah, you should have both. But if I had to choose, I'd go with gas. My Napoleon gas grill seems to keep a really steady temperature. I also use a pellet maze to produce smoke for smoking, so no refill or temp issues. I use an Inkbird 4 channel thermometer on the gas grill too. The only real drawback is I have to be at home (mostly). The range on the Inkbird is about a mile or so, so I can take the dog for a short walk or do stuff around the yard. However, using my Traeger I can go into town, or if it's a long cook, go to a different town, for a dirt bike ride, or go hunting and still manage my cook. As nice as the pellet grill is, It's not great for quick or hot and fast cooks. Burgers, kabobs, steaks, chicken pieces, sausages, shrimp and grilled veggies are all better done on the gas grill. But let me the devil's advocate here and introduce the concept of a charcoal grill too. The 3 complete the set.

I use a Weber natural gas grill, no worry about running out of propane. I don't use wireless control and monitoring devices, but not cooking for many hours, as with smoker cooking. There may be WiFi gadgets now for gas grills, not sure. I don't trust electronic gadgets and hate it when they malfunction, need firmware updates, etc. This was a very well done video like all of your videos.

I have a Ducane Affinity grill that after 11yrs has a rusted weld point on the back. It’s been a great grill, but they are no longer made. Weber bought them and then stopped making them. I thought about replacing it with a pellet grill, but I like doing 30-45 cook stuff like chicken, burgers, steaks, veggies so with what the videos I’m seeing I think I just need to get mine repaired as I just replaced the burners last year. I would like a smoker too and the pellet ones seem like a good idea.

So, for your pellet smoker, no power, no grilling? If that is so, it could be a problem down here in hurricane prone, South Louisiana. That being said, I already have a Weber kettle and their Spirit II gas grill. I've been playing with smoking with the 26" kettle but, even with making a charcoal "fuse", temperature control is a problem. I agree with you regarding wifi but, then again, that is dependent upon power. However, You've got me thinking about getting a smoker. Thank you for the great video.

Great video sir! One question I have, and please forgive me because I’m new to this, but what foods would you cook fast on the gas grill, and what foods would be better cooked on the pellet smoker?

It’s like comparing apples to oranges,. Are you trying to cook quick (hot dogs, burgers, steaks?) or smoke all day (Ribs, BBQ brisket, pulled pork, smoked salmon)?.

What about taste? Does the pellet smoker make food taste better like it's been grilled on charcoal?

Smoke from wood pellets is not the same as charcoal. A totally different flavor profile. See the videos on this channel. Wood smoking can be achieved with a gas grill. Which is why it wasn't mentioned. But the pellet smoker usually yields better smoke infusion. All the same, I have had some good smoked meat from my gas grill. Have a look at more on this channel.

Prices change with time. You are talking about prices today in the middle of an economic recession. We who have owned these for years know the deal. It is more than double the price at times and was when this video was made.

Which grill produces more smoke? Patio cooking here and have neighbors directly above and next to me. How is the auger powered on the pellet grill? I live in hurricane country and would like to have something that cooks during power outage.

Pellet Smoker makes the most smoke, no doubt. And they are not to be used under an overhang. The auger is electric powered.
