Gas Dryer Ignites But Wont Stay Lit

Музыка

Maytag #MDG3758AWW Gas Dryer ignites but will not stay lit. I have checked the limit switches and they are fine. I also replaced the gas valve coils and have the same result. Does anybody have any other troubleshooting tips to help me out?

Valve coils are most likely the issue. Just did a recent repair. Checked fuse and all thermo sensors for continuity. Flame sensor and filament was good. Only other culprit is the coil valves (2 round black things in front middle of video). When they get old, they don’t open and close as should. $9 fix!

Air flow problem. Are your vents cleaned? Another common problem is the way you’re checking it. When too much air is introduced it begins to short cycle. Close up the dryer and open up the port underneath the door, and check for gas staying lit through there. Not with the cover off. That seems to be a whirlpool product based off the gas valve. Try it out and keep us updated. I’m an appliance technician.

Valve coils, 9 or 10 dollars in ebay. One of them makes gas valve open, the other turns off the ignition coil or pilot while leaving the gas valve open until it reaches certain temperature, and then receives a signal to close it. Is like cycles of opening and closing the valve all controlled by a thermostat right above the ignition. But the coils are likely bad and are not doing what they are meant to do. If you test for continuity in those valves they might check good, but once they get hot is when they fail. I had to do this with the same exact gas valve type. Believe me, 10 dollars top. Super easy to change. They have numbers at the bottom of each coil, but the valve usually has a brand and you can look for those exact ones. I didn’t. But the dryer works like new. Really hope it helps 👍.

The people saying this is an issue with air flow are correct. Ask me how I know. Looks just like an Alliance Speed Queen and the blower inlet can be seen wide open on the lower right when the camera moves back from the unit at the 32-second time marker. The wide-open fan isn't drawing flame heat into the tube and up to the drum. The flame just sits and heats up the safety thermostat so quick that it shuts down the gas valve within seconds. That blower can only draw the flame and heat away from the safety thermostat when the front drum support, drum, blower intake shroud, and front panel/door are in place to make an air pathway that draws heat into the drum where it belongs [at the same time drawing heat away from the safety thermostat on top of the tube]. A one-piece front panel should have a peep hole with a cover to examine the burner operation with the drum closed up. Two-piece front allows the bottom to be opened with the door/upper panel in place to examine the burner operation with the drum closed up.

I had the same problem. I have a Maytag Neptune Dryer. I first replaced the gas Solenoid like you, didn’t fix it. I then read it could be the Thermal Fuse that measures the temperature inside the dryer. Went on Amazon to order the part and ended up ordering a Thermal Fuse Kite I replaced the Thermal Fuse still didn’t fix it. I then replaced the Thermistor & the High Limit Thermostat; that fixed it a little bit (made the gas stay on for 20 seconds instead of 5). It turned out that my issue was my vent were clogged...really bad. Before you buy anything run a test; Remove your vent pipe from your dry and turn it on. If your gas stays on for over a minute then your vent is clogged.

Just adding two cents here. Replaced the coils about a month ago. Just realized tonight the flame wasn’t staying lit. Searched the web and saw the comments in this video. Turns out, we had a big snow storm yesterday and we were doing wash all day, looks like the outside vents were blocked with lint and frozen up so there was no air flow. Cleared the vent and it’s good to go.

I had this problem and I couldn't figure out why the flame seemed unorganized and was coming out the top (and back) of the combustion chamber like yours is. I replaced the solenoids and even the whole gas valve to no avail. Checked all the thermostats with a multimeter and they were working. Called a repair man and he told me that my blower fan was broken, meaning the hot air from the burner was not being sucked through the dryer by the blower fan and then out the exhaust. Replaced the blower fan and that did the trick. It looks like you have the same problem: the flame is coming out the top of the combustion chamber right by the thermostat and the thermostat thinks the dryer is over-heating and shuts it off. That's an airflow/fan problem and mine was fixed by installing a new blower fan. Not as easy as the KZread videos since my fan had been on there for about 23 years. it was totally stuck so I had to use a hack saw to cut through the plastic fan and through the plastic nut. Then used the hacksaw to cut all the way through the metal nut in the middle and finally got it off. Replaced with a new one and, two weeks into the project, voila!

THIS. So many options. Just changed to L.P. from N.G.. The unit worked wonderfully for three years prior; now, it seems to trigger a Safety Shut-Off response. Have adjusted the shutter to help-control the airflow (BUT: I have the face of the dryer off - thus, an open chamber, so.... how do I set a carburetion-point for the combustion.... while the machine is sealed..?

Thermocouple is malfunctioning.. the thing with the 2 wires that are connected to the outside of the pipe. It looks like a fridge magnet. It's pressing the limit switch that is shutting off your heat. I'm also guessing it works without the heat cycle on. That was the last pop you heard. The click before it shut off. I just fixed mine.

  • @JustAlex686
    @JustAlex6867 ай бұрын

It most likely shut off because it did not detect the flame or it was not hot enough, they are usually designed to shut off quickly if there isn't a flame to stop a large amount of gas from being in the combustion chamber, which could cause an explosion. It either doesn't have enough airflow to burn well or the heat sensor is faulty/disconnected

I just came back from this problem at a customer's house. Everything was testing good, but the flame wouldn't stay on for more than 10 seconds. it wasn't until I took the vent tube off and saw water running out of it that I realized their vent was blocked which caused bad air flow issues. The poor air flow is what was causing the flame to cut out after 10 seconds. With the vent off it worked just fine. I advised to have someone come out and clean their dryer vent duct out.

@@bigredd2866 you change the igniter? The dryer is pretty simple. If it’s not the igniter, gas coils, sensors or the timer panel then it could be the exhaust might be full of lint.

Check for continuity on the elements , check there enough gas coming also electricity. Before buying if posible some elements you can bypass by using a wire and just creating a jump from One wire to one wire .This would help you test by creating a direct connection which might fix the issue and you don’t waste money on seeing which one is actually the bad piece

Running the dryer without the drum and front bulk head assembly, it won’t stay lit since the high limit safety thermostat is heating up and turning the burner off to prevent it from overheating. If I had one of those Speed Queen dryers, I would just put a 20,000 or 18,000 btu orifice in to make it easier on the thermostats and clothes. 18,000 btus may be on the lower side, but I honestly would have a dryer that takes longer to dry but is gentler on the clothes, and doesn’t scorch them.

This seems some sensible advice. As I've responded to another post: How does one calibrate the burn-shutter if the compartment has to be sealed to produce accurate burn-envelope? How do I develop X-Ray eyes? And, if I had them, how would I adjust the shutter, in -real-time, through a sealed compartment? Clearly, I'm missing something. #DamnYouPhysics!

You can also use a multimeter to test for continuity in most parts, while they are unplugged to detwrmine what is bad. Deffinately air flow issue. Clean your ducts every three months or you'll be paying me to do it.

clogged main dryer vent. flames should shoot forward, not up. when flame turns up, thermostat that is located on top stops flames from running. Or could also be your valves which are easy to change. Valves are the ones that are in your video.
