    I had the honor of meeting Mr. Player at the 2002 U. S. Senior Open. He walked with my brother and me under our umbrella to the men’s locker room. He was very friendly, asked how we got to the Senior Open and welcomed us. A great champion and gentleman. What a memorable time we had.

    Enjoyed and learned from this one, thanks to the passion Gary Player has for the game and life. I got the yips terribly at 46 yrs old. Friend suggested a longer belly putter which I held away from my body and anchored with my left hand. Was able to release the putter head finally, developed an ok feel over time. Oddly, my distance control was good by my standards right off the bat but I had to work on line for a few months longer. Used this putter for 6 straight years. Then one day this time last year I had to rent a set on a business trip and my clubs didn’t follow the plane. I just knew I was going to get my clock cleaned so I told my group that whatever the bet was I was not going to lose more than $50, they agreed. So now I have low expectations and no worries, had 23!putts that day, won $150 with low gross and strange putter. With me, the yips came with a mind cluttered with negative outcomes and left when I firmly decided to feel it, hit it and go get it, no matter where it ended up. An example of how yips were overcome for anyone interested

He was hitting a 6 iron and his caddy at the time was standing down range... Never once did the ball go more than a meter left of right of his caddy.. Spoton deadly accurate; not to even talk about his shortgame... What a Legend !!

I wouldn't bet on anyone going head to head with him in a short game contest.. Everything I've heard him say in his clips, makes total sense (and some stuff is tongue in cheek). Fantastic self belief, built up through years of study of the game, practice and talent. Also, and this is huge, his passion for staying fit, is a key part to his success and longevity. Everyone wanting to make improvements to their game should check out all his clips.

    It rolls off the tongue nicely but sadly, it's completely untrue. You can't putt for the dough if you haven't been strong from tee to green. Tee balls and approach play contribute more to scoring than putting possibly can. Some people just don't want to give up on trsditions though.

    @@interestedbystander196 The one strategic rule of modern golf is to take as much club as you can off the tee whilst still giving yourself a shot at the green. In most cases the reward you get for a good drive is worth the risk of a bad drive. Putting it 250 in the fairway every time won't win tournaments when you're giving up yard after yard to someone taking driver wherever possible. Driver wins the money now, not putting.

    i went to the chipping green and out of 20 balls, the pitching wedge got the ball closer to the hole on average than my 56 degree sand wedge. It's just too hard to get the height and more importantly the spin correct with a higher lofted wedge. It's easier to hole out when you keep it low, too.

    I recently got two clubs that have helped my chipping. One is a short chipper by Mizuno, large bottom with bounce, around 7 iron loft. The other is a 50 degree Mizuno wedge with C grind and just 8 degrees of bounce, oh this has a big round head that looks so good at address that it's easy to hit a great shot. I use this to land close and stop quick most of the time. But when I'm closer in yet can't putt, I use my chipping iron for lower rolling chips. I find the 7 iron too long and don't like moving my hands down to lower part of grip. With these 2 clubs doing most of my chipping I am getting better and better with them both. I practice with the chipper because I don't get to use it that much, we got elevated and protected greens lots of bunkers etc so straight chip and roll is rare for me.

My statements stand! You do not know golf and should play softball! Don't use a chipper, why you ask? I'm glad to tell you. The chipper makes you bad, learn to use an iron for chipping. Even a hybrice suffice as a chipping tool from bump and run lies in the rough. Grip down on the 7 iron if it's too long! That is backing my statements. I am a big fan of Garry, but he does get to me in him going on about weekend golfers - why? I have only three putted twice in my life and am sure I could match Gary any day when it comes to chipping and putting! The young golfers I can understand his meaning as they are only interested in how far they can hit the ball, putting is all about keeping the putter head close to the ground throughout the putting swing, the minute you bow the wrists or pick the putter up, there is no way that ball will find it's target! Mind you I am not a weekend golfer, I play every day (weather permitting) But I agree with his chipping method with a 6/7 iron, they are more going forward to the target than any lob wedge that can stop too quickly or spin to far back from the hole! You can gain better scores with better chipping and putting ability, Length helps, but if you can't chip around the greens and don't feel confident in putting, then you need to work on those areas instead of practising your long game! Garry is a great mentor but he needs to lay off the weekend golfer, we are not all that bad!

  • @jon_cook

    @jon_cook

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think you misunderstand his meaning. Gary is a huge promoter of the game and really thinks golf should be made easier and more enjoyable for the "weekend golfer". His point is that the average (or less than) golfer doesn't have the club and ball control that a pro does. They see Phil flop one on from five yards off the green and think they're going to have the same result just to blade it thin and knock it 20 yards over the green. Oh and BS you've only three putted twice in you life.

    Three words...practice, practice, and ..oh yes.....practice!, what Gary player says is true, and, with today’s equipment, how could you not play better golf?, ill, tell you why not, because most people who take up golf never take golf lessons, so they either end up frustrated, or never play constantly or indeed give up.
