Part 1: • Gary Payton on His Dad...
--------
In the latest clip, Gary Payton explained why John Stockton was harder to guard than Michael Jordan. He said Stockton was "stone-faced" during games and never reacted to his legendary trash talk. Payton added that Stockton had to be guarded the entire length of the court and was also a threat on defense. Later in the clip, Payton reflected on being the first point guard to make over $10 million per year.

I remember when I was in college seeing Stockton play for Gonzaga against Santa Clara. People were saying at the time that Stockton was a must-see player. He was exactly as Payton describes. He didn't take a lot of shots, but played something like this: 1st quarter: 1-2 FG; 2-2 FT; 2 AST 2nd quarter: 3-5 FG, 1-1 FT: 3 AST; 2 Reb; 1 steal 3rd quarter: 2-3 FG; 1-1 FT; 2 AST; 1 reb; 2 steals 4th quarter: 2-4 FG; 1-2 FT; 4 AST; 1 reb So he's not taking a lot of shots, he's getting layups, a few mid-range jumpers. He's not blowing you away, but by the end, he's got this line: Game: 8-14 FG; 5-6 FT: 21 pts., 11 AST; 4 reb; 3 steals And you say to yourself, WTF just happened? But then you remember one of the assists was a one-handed baseball throw bounce pass from half court to a guy perfectly in stride for an easy layup and you say to yourself, "Well, THAT'S what just happened." John Stockton was a bad man. Seriously.

Tim Hardaway, Mark Jackson, Avery Johnson, Mark Price and KJ said the same thing about Stockton in interviews. They say he makes very little to no mistakes. He's not flashy so his assist to turnover ratio was immaculate. J Kidd said in an interview that he was the fastest player he has ever played against. His game was fundamental but I still loved watching him play. I got a chance to see Utah play against my hometown team, the Hornets in 1994 and he is really fast and quick. There is a difference.

With MJ, it was a part of life that he was going to do what he does - DESTROY YOU. All you can hope for is to slow him down. I've seen Stockton play live, he's much bigger than people think he is for starters. Second, he played the game much different than what you see today. He got you in foul trouble right away, his defense infuriated opponents, he's not going to turn the ball over, he can really shoot, but is a pass first PG that can kill with the Pick & Roll. The casual fan cannot understand what GP is saying. Stockton played a different style that would put opponents in a bad head space.

Stockton is the greatest PG of all time without question, for anyone who actually knows the game and saw him play first hand. He grew up working class in Spokane, WA and went to Catholic school, which might not mean much to anyone here but what it means is the guy is tough as nails. GP is from Oakland and has immense respect for Stockton and how tough he is, that tells you a lot right there. It trips people out because John looks like the average suburban dad but he's not a man anyone would want to fuck with I guarantee you that. All of the greats from his era have stories about him and they all respected and feared him on the court. He broke his leg playing for the dream team ahead of the 92 olympics and played through it anyway.

A lot of people also think his assists come from longevity when out of the top 10 most assists in a season, Stockton has 7 of those seasons!!😂😂😂 on top of giving you 17+ points in his prime to go with it lol. And his assist/turnover ratio is the greatest of all time also so 🤷‍♂️, combined with his defensive prowess, jump shooting ability from all fields, the most durability from a point guard…..you start to wonder, “why is he not considered the GOAT point guard in literally every basketball conversation?” Most underrated player of all time in my opinion along with Olajuwon.

It should always be mentioned that Stockton had a severe right arm injury in the 1996 WCF. It was so bad that he considered only dribbling with his left, but decided against it because he didn't want the Sonics to see how bad the injury was. Nonetheless, it became obvious that everyone knew including Payton, as he often backed off Stockton and dared him to shoot in the series. Malone went on to say that 95% of players would have sat that series out with the injury that Stockton decided to play through.

You do realize some millennial are pushing 40 my dude! Some of the older ones grew up watching Stockton and Malone as kids!! For example, I missed being a millennial by 3 years and I'm 42. I grew up watching late 80s and 90s basketball and I'm right at the very end of Gen X, some say we are our own group Xennials. Too young to really be Gen X to old to be Gen Y (Millennial) A lot of old ppl seem to not get that Gen Z are the youngsters.

@@eddtone24 Did you listen to how you he was explaining how Stockton was on the court? He knows Jordan was hard to guard, but Stockton was much harder because the trash talk didn't phase him. He was always focused and was moving around a lot off screens and pick and rolls making Payton work harder to stay on him. You think it's easier to guard a point guard who constantly moves around a lot and making you have to stay on him than a shooting guard who always has the ball in hands ready to score?

@@eddtone24 you Jordan fans got hard heads. Number one, he literally explained why in the video. Two, there's a thing called match ups, some players find specific players tougher to guard because of their unique set of skills. Each player is different. Three MJ averaged 23 on 36 percent shooting with Payton guarding him in the 96 finals.
