People born in the 1960s and 1970s will have spent their apprenticeships and training on the job listening to him on radio one and getting through a miserable job on a miserable site in miserable weather ,then transferring to radio 2 and his afternoon show getting the whole workforce through the day. Then sunday love songs would get us through washing and cleaning the kichen. For getting me through life , i salute you.

Youngsters today will never understand how big Radio 1 was back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. The DJ's used to present Top Of The pops aswell as presenting on the radio. Such magical times and Steve was right at the very heart of it. His afternoon show on Radio 1 was amazing, that era of radio was incredible. RIP Steve

You're so right, a quiet, reliable legend, a best cousin, guy at work (who we had a fond crush on in the 80's). A hell of an impact on our lives leaving genuine grief.

I grew up listening to Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1, then on Radio 2. He was the best with his posse and banter. I am truly shocked and saddened to hear he had passed away.

I remember listening to Steve Wright on the Radio in the early 1980s. He was wonderful. We used to have the radio on at work when I worked in the dole office in Manchester…. the back office! There was a team of about 40 of us and we would all laugh at Mr Angry yelling down the phone and all the cast of characters. Steve Wright had a beautiful voice and great energy. I am 60 years old and I bet a lot of people of my “vintage” will be very sad and feeling very nostalgic after hearing of Steve’s sudden passing. R.I.P Sir and thank you for the happy memories x

What a bunch of Hypocrites, any bbc show should be banned or at least shamed into NOT paying these false tributes to Steve. The way that cow sacked him and made sure he kept his mouth shut by offering the carrot of letting him keep the couple of hours on Sunday and this never materialising digital stuff they promised is sickening. If they held Steve in such high esteem why sack him? Especially to replace him by someone whose only qualifications are box ticking from the gay box. Oh and no dig at Gary Davies here, another quality legend from the old radio 1 stable (before woke corruption)

With regard to the zoo format, this seemed to be foisted on terry wogan when he returned to the airwaves in the 90s. I never felt it worked as well for terry as it did for steve. Terrys show felt too scripted and we were used to him doing old style radio, talking directly to the listene. It felt like we were eavesdropping on a party we werent invited to as terry chatted to his newsreaders. Just seemed like terrys individuality was taken away with the new format that steve was a master of.

@ritch195 Exactly. I’ve never really seen the problem. In any job younger people have to come in and replace the old people eventually. It gave Steve Wright the opportunity to retire for a few years before he died which is a good thing not a bad thing.

I worked in a mobile phone workshop in the 90's, Radio 2 and the Steve Wright show was on every afternoon, I noticed it was produced to a formula, pretty much rigid, with never an opportunity missed to read out " dear Steve love the show " and of course it was 'the Big Show??' I found it contrived, repetitive, and irritating, how it continued for so long was a mystery to me.....he was a nice bloke, and he was very popular, its a shame he died, but was his programme that good?
